You guys are some great enablers. With this crew around I'm gonna end up with all the 5186 vises on the west coast.

Here are the before pictures if people wanted to see them.

I used Rustoleum navy blue and hammered silver for the lettering.

For the Reed I used hammered black and hammered silver in the lettering again.

Big thanks to redleader for the deburring wheel recommendation. for the shinny bits. And Big thanks to nine4gmc for the FluidFilm recommendation to keep them that way. You can trust a man from Louisiana on how to keep rust at bay.

Jeremey: awesome job on those two Reeds even if one says Craftsman. i'm not sure you want to try to win an argument with guys that own a hundred hammers and 20 tool boxes on whether a tool is needed or not. BEE CAREFUL!!

by the way i'm sure you won't have much competition buying all the buses you can afford, but you might have a little competition from some vise buyers if you start trying to hoard them instead of just buying them as you need them. good luck on the bus purchases. :bounce:

B100: thanks for posting the 48 and i'll start building an extra stand for one comes near me to buy. Thanks for posting and thanks for putting the bug in my ear that i need that on VA.

....

Thanks for pointing out the spelling error. I fixed it now. Darn autocorrect on my phone caught me again. I'll let someone else point out the irony of you catching my spelling error while mispelling my name....oops, looks like I did it after all.

Thanks for the kind words Drives. Next up is the Holland 15 you helped my find that was my first real vise and the start of my contribution and obsession with this thread :shocking:

It's this Columbian model, but more beat up, I like it (I'm a Clevelander), it's a good size for me too and I think wear gives it authenticity.

A Hardie hole? Time for research :) Hope to have some actual pics soon. Thanks.

Pete

The square hole is original and it took a matching square inset hardie hot cutter. Square that way it wouldn't rotate when you are trying to cut something. It was one of those better on paper, hardly used ideas. Unless that thing is super cheap and or you just like it, I think I might look for something else. I think they are ~4" vises. IIRC they made them both with round and square insert holes on the anvil.

what is the best blast media for cleaning the layers and layers of old paint off our vises without damaging the ductile iron material, and at what psi air pressure?

Most on here don't like blasting media and are stripping using paint remover or electrolysis tanks then using a wire wheel for finishing. I use aluminum oxide @ 50- 60 psi for heavy rust & paint. I guess it depends on what you are working on. I don't think media blasting is going to hurt that old Morgan you are working on.

Jeremy: so i guess i'll have to hit the quote button to save the OOPS spelling auto corrects before the smart members go back and change them. nice that you are going to collect all the Craftsman vises instead of buses like you said originally so i know where to find them if i get some extra cash.

Again nice work finding those Reeds and for bringing them back to life.

Wild Cowboy: i vote for Electrolysis too and if you are set on blasting it I've heard glass beads might be the best method. good luck on that Huge Morgan restoration.

Wow all this talk of big vises gets things stirred up. I bought a prentiss 57(208#) last friday that was real nice. I know it is not a monster but it was an unusually clean vise that was inside. I just have not ran across a big vise in a long time. I need to post some pics of several vises but it has been crazy busy.
For anyone interested Western Minnesota Steam Thresher Reunion (Rolog) will be featuring blacksmithing for the show next labor day weekend. I know it is a ways off but I will be taking up 30 some of my biggest vises and 3 500# anvils and several other obnoxiously big pieces of blacksmith equipment. This is close to Fargo ND for those not familiar with the steam show. It is the biggest in the midwest. You cannot see it all in 4 days. Would be great to meet other members up there. :D

I am working on a restoration of a 211 lb Morgan 80 that will hopefully put this overlooked brand up to the top tier of vises - correct me if I am wrong, but having trouble seeing what any Wilton, Reed, Parker, Athol, Columbian or Prentiss has on it - other than most of those no longer have factory jaw face availability.

Go MORGAN!

Yea demo, nice to know that you are just lurking and not deserting.---Good to hear from you.---How you going to move all that iron up to Minnesota, and you are just showing, not selling, right?

When I think about your collection of the really big vises, it puts me in mind of something Barbra Mandrel said, ("she was country when country wasn't cool"), so I know you had to of started collecting vises before collecting vises was even thought of by the masses.---Back when the monsters were affordable.---People's attitude really has changed towards the old iron.

Good hunting, and oh yea, I want that D.C. Cummings

I've used the aluminum oxide stuff and glass beads, both work fine. I usually run about 85-95 PSI depending on how stubborn and thick the old paint is...

You aren't going to damage the old metal unless it's seriously rusted through.

Here's my contribution for today -

a 5" Craftsman 506.51810 in "Don't arrest-me-red". It may not be one of the most desirable ones (with the model stamped on the nose), but it's the closest that I've been able to get so far. It will take me a while to get around to giving it some pigmented love, but when I'm done it may replace my 5-1/2" 1989 columbian made Cman.

Monarch is the value version of the prentiss vise line. Great lion logo seems to add to their value as a collectible. Check to make sure the rear of the beam isn't cracked, common among prentiss vises.

Dubby: That Monarch vise doesn't have to sit on a shelf. if you treat it like a vise and not a press or an anvil it will last another 100 years or so. by the way it's about 100 years old in case you wanted to know. the back slides on a lot of old vises were used as anvils by the old timers so that's why they cracked.

if no cracks, broken parts or welds it is a great find and worth some coin.

Demoman: thanks for sharing that you are bringing your collection (or part of it) maybe on a railroad car to the show. wish i didn't have 2 kids still in college living with us or i'd take a flight to see part of your collection. some members i think use your post of all your big vises as a screensaver so if you have an updated picture of the crew or any new members please post as many pictures as you wish. thanks in advance.

Outlaw: very festive coloring on your Avitar.

Picked up a Wagon tongue vise for $25. The spring between the jaws is broken but the rest of it is in very nice shape. I had never heard of a wagon tongue vise but I found pics on here. The jaw shape is very close to a Columbian post vise that I have.
Jaw width 3 7/8"
Appears to be designed to clamp onto a 2 1/4 x 6" beam

100$ for it fair?

I am a big fan of Monarch's, but have not found the right deal yet.

The pic looks like it is in good shape, if there are no cracks, maybe offer $75-$80 when you see it, but personally I would take it for $100. It might be considered lighter duty than a Bulldog, or 5" Reed, but I buy open screw vice or anything that appeals to me. A 5" Monarch appeals to me.
