Opportunities today started with an advertised estate sale but it turned out to be bust. No tools in the garage, and a bunch of housewares inside the house.

Second stop was the local consignment shop and I found a pretty nice Flambeau rifle case in new condition for $15.
Rifle Case.jpg

Third stop was to the local Habitat Re-Store and I came out with a new frosted lamp globe, some round elec box adapters and covers, and one Indestro offset DBE for a total of $4.25.
Re-Store 10-4.jpg

Fourth stop was to the Salvation Army and I was able to add to the garage collection of background entertainment. VHS tapes 20 cents each.

The best score of the day came from CL. A seller only 10 minutes away offering this Geneva Manuf truck tool box for $10. I jumped at it. Diamond plate aluminum box with heavy gage steel drawers. It is missing the front door but I can make one to fit. All drawers slide nice and smooth. Brand new this is a $200-$300 box so I'm happy to wash it up and make it shine again for a ten spot.

Only one sale resulted in a score. It was a "make a pile" style of private estate sale - my favorite kind. I built a $50 pile with all of these items.

This is the first time I've come across a CM block grinder 100% complete and in near perfect condition. (Even the rubber feet on the base.) It's also a 1/2 HP Commerical roundtop version:

A couple giant porcelin "toad stool" insulators:

A quality air gauge and 3 NOS spools of solder:

A pile of misc. tools and some big sturdy handles. (SK, SO, Brinks & Cotton and Diamond)

Pretty slim pickings this morning. First stop was an 'estate sale' that they ran as such (sign-up sheet, etc), but didn't have anything tool-wise worth getting. Next stop was a TOO. Also a bust. One more TOO, once more I left empty-handed. Finally, I went to a "huge estate sale" that looked anything but in the photos. I wasn't very optimistic, but I did find the following:

$5 got me: Two SK 3/8" speeders (one is "SK", the other "SK Tools", so at least there's some variety!), Sargent parallel-jaw pliers, Craftsman Buck Rogers push drill, SK combo and DOE, Barcalo offset DBE, and a Blackhawk/Armstrong DOE.

It had been a while, so I figured I'd hit the HoH REstore on the way home. Found the following there:

The pliers at top are Matchless by Bridgeport, the screwdriver is Duro Chrome, and all the sockets are USA. There's Craftsman, Armstrong, Williams, Duro Chrome, Penncraft, Wright, SK, Kraeuter, etc. One of them is a Snap-On with a 1945 date code, another is a 9/16" Kraeuter. Really handy since the Kraeuter set I bought last weekend was missing the 9/16"!

Flea market tomorrow. I've scored really great stuff there before, and also been shut out. Hopefully the cold weather will be good for me!

On Friday I went to the Far Hills NJ VNA Rummage Sale.

I hit the tool area and found a few things.

I picked up a partial Challenger set that is 3/8 and 1/4 drive. The missing socket was filled by an S-K socket that I pulled and a 1/4 S-K extension that I pulled. This was $3.00.

I picked up 4 DBE wrenches - 3 Craftsman and an unknown for $2.00.

A few weeks ago I picked up a McCulloch 18" Gas chainsaw at the curb. Once the gas line was unclogged it runs great. The only downside is that it leaks bar oil while stored.

Cheers

Jim

Stanley and Pratt-Read also offered that style of cushion grip screwdriver. I'm not sure who the original manufacturer was.

Dave - nice score on the blockhead.

Thought this was a unique enough storage item to fork over $225 for. Not real sure what the value on it is, but it is in real good shape in and out with killer graphics ! Just a little ' soft-scrub' works great every time, followed by a light polish. Cool thing is that Century Display Corp is stamped on the back...same town as S-K was, Franklin Park, Illinois.

3bay, Nice stuff! What's in the black socket set box?

nine4, Don't rub it in! In the 30s and spitting rain this morning! I'll post my meager finds a little later...

Don't worry, I stayed up all night last night working on a work bench wall project in my shop and then hit some sales, hung out for a while and went to "take a nap" just before noon. I expected to get up at noon or so and enjoy the day but my sorry *** slept til 7pm.... I missed out one of the few perfect days we get here in south Louisiana. :(

Got this at an estate liquidation they said it wasnt running.
So I brought it home this morning cleaned the carb, cleaned and serviced everything head to toe and put in a new spark plug. Got it running like a top in a few hours. It has great compression too.
Paid 75$ for it and its my first chainsaw at my new house, Ive always borrowed my fathers, never had my own.

Anyone know the year of this thing?

Unfortunately not, but my local locksmith should be able to help me out. The right-side doors are magnetic close, and the left-side have spring latches.

That's a killer old Stihl. Before you start cutting wood you might want to wander over to the chainsaw forum at arboristsite.com.

That saw could have significant value based on it's age and excellent condition.

Thank you for the site! I have heard of them before, I just made an account
I would love to find out the mfg year and find an old manual to print out

I went to one sale today and ended up waiting a few hours for it to open.

I was promised "tons of vintage tools" so I was excited. It's an old area where people only move when they are hauled away in the coreners van:lol:

About 5 minutes prior to the start the lady mentions her mailing list. It seems all email list members get to come a day early to shop so this is basically the second day:mad:

The shop was about the size of a phone booth and had 2 screwdrivers, one soldering iron and a corded drill. Nothing else, except what I bought for 12 bucks.

I don't think I missed a damn thing yesterday and still made out pretty good today

Delta Homecraft 6" grinder. It absolutely sings when turned on and it quiet as can be.

That Stihl is older than dirt - almost. Definately a collector saw. You could probably buy a newer better saw with the money you make off that one. I have never seen one that old in person as all the saws around here get used a lot and they get wore out.

Oak Park: Those wrench racks go for a very nice price on eBay. Bought one some time back at a premium price. I've never found one in the wild. Those look mint. Great way to display V series wrenches!

It was at least made before the Berlin Wall came down. Pretty cool!

My dad has a Stihl that was made in the late 70s and it is styled a lot like the current saws so I'd guess this one was made in the early 60s. Pretty cool, especially since it runs.

Oh. And the guy had more stuff.

Bags and bags of sockets. Bins of screwdrivers. Sets of punches. Lots of craftsman. Air tools. shop vac. Small compressor. Torpedo heater. Anything you want he probably had.

In addition to this:

He started asking $100 for it but at the end wanted $75 for it. He's got dies for it. I would have taken it, but had spent more than I planned to already.

He's in Chicago. He's moving to a smaller apartment in the suburbs. So will have no room for all his stuff. I told him I'd forward the picture of then press along. If you want his contact info, pm me.

I was going to ask a similar question-it seems like the members near Chicago find a lot of old, unusual Craftsman stuff, and I always wondered if it had to do with Sears' headquarters. I know I seem to have found a lot of Blackhawk compared to others, and they were based nearby. Kenosha isn't that far away, but I don't feel like I've ever hit an SO jackpot or anything...

It's that way with just about everything I've ever looked for on CL. I think it's just because there's such a large population in a relatively small area. There's just under 10 million people in the Chicagoland (including suburbs) area. If you consider about the same size area in southeast Wisconsin (Milwaukee and suburbs), it's only about 2.5 million people.

Madison, that's a ratcheting angle driver, they still make them that style. I have a set with double flats on one, double phillips on one and one of each on the other. They are real handy working on dash speakers of older model vehicles.

There was a big autojumble near us today, scored a few minor bits, sockets and such, but this beauty will make life a lot easier when I have to run big taps. Cost me £3, so ~$5 or so.

That could be anywhere from the 50's to 90. It says West Germany which became unified in 1990. Just a thought, looks cool though.

My original plan for today was to do my usual FM tour, but last night I decided to change it up and go to some of the rain-delayed sales from yesterday. Big mistake. None of them had their sh ..... stuff together until an hour after opening, and then they didn't have any of the tools that they advertised. By the time I got to the 4th stop it was nearly 10am (I did a lot of traveling), so I chucked the rest of the plan and went to the last day of the Estate Sale from friday.

The Cman 150 DP that was originally listed at $250 was sold. It was a floor model w/no speed reducer, in near pristine shape and no arc of shame. I asked and was told that it sold for $225 . I figured that it would end up going for $125-$150 (still too rich for my blood).

I spent some time digging and filled another bag full of stuff for $25.

Since I was close to one of the FM's I decided to make that my last stop for the day. No luck finding tools for myself, but I did find a Black & Decker 17" electric hedge trimmer for my grandfather to replace the one my cousin broke last weekend. I paid a total of $6 for it ($1 entrance fee + $5 for the trimmer).

Great stuff! I hit a several-times-per-year flea market today. I usually do pretty well at this FM, but last year the one on this date was a bust. Today I got going a little later than I wanted to, and arrived on the grounds shortly after 7. Just as well, I don't know how I would have shopped in the dark. The temperature was 32, and you'd think it was -32 listening to the people complain :headscrat

ANYWAY, this was probably my last chance of the year to make a big score. Here's what I found, starting slow:

At top is a Champion DeArment BP hammer, then 2 Utica pliers with the 3-rings logo (meaning they are pre-1911), CeeTee slip-joints, Petersen Vise Grips made before they added the release lever, a Blackhawk socket wrench, and a Craftsman =V= DBE.

At top: the box of sockets I got tired of sorting and cleaning this afternoon. See the next pic for more, but there are Cman, SO, Indestro, etc in here. At right is a Sunnen valve spring compressor. Going below, there's a Craftsman 1/2" drive =V= ratchet in great cosmetic shape. Unfortunately, it's in need of a rebuild kit. That's obsolete. Below that is a Challenger 3/8 ratchet, a Craftsman =V= 1/2" drive extension, an SK 1/4 extension (with the diamond logo), an Enderes advertising mini reversible screwdriver, and a Powr-Kraft adjustable. To the right are a Crestoloy adjustable and a Blue Point adjustable that I probably should have left there.

Finally:

At top is a set of "S-K Chrome" knurled-base sockets in their (repainted) box (AA says this means they are 1930s production), a partial SK Wayne 1/4" drive set, more modern "SK Professional Tools" 1/4" drive SAE and metric sets (these are nearly complete), an Indestro Super 3/8" and 1/4" drive set, the case below that has an older set of Craftsman metric sockets-when the hashmarks were at the top instead of the bottom. On the rails are a Williams 1/4 SAE set missing a few, a Proto Professional 1/4 metric set missing a couple, and the bottom row is 1/2 drive: 3 Snap-On, 1 New Britain, 3 Williams, 4 Indestro, and 1 Cornwell.

I hope I don't have to wait until next year to have another good day like this! :rocker:

I've been way too busy actually working and travelling for my job so no tool sales for a long time so this was the first weekend in a while.

Sunday Flea net was two 12" malco USA shears and a 10" Retterer USA snips for $3 a piece.

Hoffritz made in Italy sicissors, and some 1/8" cutoff discs for $5 total.

So I guess it was a "theme" this weekend with "things that cut". Emo girls would be proud.LOLZ.

=v= 3/4" C'man scoket and big *** fastener storage box for $3 total.

Seems the Malco blades for the shears are $15 a set, so I guess it time to pull and resharpen them.

Not a stellar day but not hateful. :)
