Start of 1 car garage for my Harley

Oct 2014 edit - Title should now be "start of 1 car garage for my motorcycles", as the Vrod, has a new mate, a 2012 GSXR 750; couldn't pass it up. It only had 350 miles on it.

Ok, so I am starting my one car garage build thread. New Townhouse being built so,will have a clean slate. Main purpose of garage will be to store and work on my motorcycle and minor work, as needed on cars. Too small for a man cave, but might throw a tv on the wall and either a small portable ac or direct a duct from the house, no clue yet.

I plan on doing race deck flooring or something similar with shades of gray and red, build a bench, build some storage around the walls off the floor (leaving available floor space open, and no or little "household storage". The only thing I might be stuck with in the garage is the freakin trash bin. I've already decided I won't be doing any recycling, therefore getting rid of the recycling bin.

In the interim, I have my things set up in the current garage, so technically it is the before shots for me. and I've picked up some items as needed or as I find them on sale.

My new HF bottom bought last week. I am going to have to get the top HF in red so it matches. the black craftsman, as I paid $100 for it a few months ago in clearance. I ll probably put the black CM for sale on craiglist.

Below, my vrod. I am going to sell the motorcycle trailer and get a foldable one.... Might have to be stuck with an HF trailer. Oh and you can also see my new IR 20 gal compressor... Paid $300 at sears, down from about $500 as a display model...

Living in Florida, we have the occasional risk of a hurricane and with that come power outages sometimes, so I was lucky to get this new Briggs generator. Cost? Free .. Just realized it might be stick in the garage when I move.

Got this motorcycle lift on sale at HF..

Below is a better pic of the trailer from that hardware store "Tractor someThing", I forgot the name. I started the short trip from HF with my new tool box with three HF tie down straps... When we got home, after 2-3 stops, to retighten the straps, finally a mile from the house I gave up, put the blinkers on and made it home on one strap.. Lesson learned, the cheap. HF straps **** lol.

Some temporary shelves I built until I move and build or install something permanent. I also used one of these shelves as a table for now. Cost? Free

I guess that's it for now. I've gotten a lot of ideas on here plus a few ideas I've thought of.

Well I bought some wall decor for my unfinished garage. It should be arriving soon, but figured I would post what I plan on going on the walls. It might be too many pieces for a one car garage with the cabinets I plan on installing,we will see once I get to that point.

Latest plans for the garage?

Flooring - I was going with racedeck type flooring, but after pricing it out, and the work I plan on doing in the garage, it won't be feasible, so I am going with epoxy. I have read quite a bit on here, and opinions on every other brand. If I am correct I should be able to lay the epoxy myself for about $200? The garage is 240 sq ft, 11x 20.

What convinced me on the epoxy was while teaching my son how to change the oil on the VROD, ½ of the oil drained ended up on the floor, lol… ok, not ½, practically the 5 quarts. He learned his lesson. Next time make sure you have easy access to the drain plug and don’t let the floor jack block you.

Cabinets? I gave notice to a contractor friend of mine, if he pulls any cabinets in decent condition from a job, to let me know, so we will see. I was also looking at the New Age Bold series in red or the Sears Gladiator 30" if they go back on sale.

Bench - definitely building my own wood bench. It's going to be my first project for the garage.

Lighting? Based on what I have read here it looks like I will be putting four fixtures to help going forward / back of garage, if that makes sense.

Already got the electric cord reel online, forget what brand, but it was recommended. I need to get 50' air hose reel.

Wow, how things change lol... Let me update my garage build thread...

Now the harley v rod has a new younger brother to share the garage with. I got about two weeks ago a 2012 GSXR 750, with just 350 miles on it..

Finally took possession of the new property last week , so started with the garage. Its a one car garage. Saturday, 9/27 did the acid etching process to the floor. I rented a blower fan from HD and it worked out great to dry the floor.

I decided to paint the walls before the epoxy floor, so started putting primer on the edges...

The walls are going to go red on top, black stripe painted around 48" from ground level, then gray on the bottom. I bought one gallon for each color, but i have a feeling i am going to need more.

For floor, i decided on the Legacy epoxy floor. Going with white floor black and gray flakes. Already received it last week. I will do the floor starting this weekend hopefully after we finished the walls. Legacy was very helpful here, on the phone, and on email!

I want to install more lights. So any suggestions will be welcome.

Almost forgot.. I decided to go with NewAge cabinets vs kitchen cabinets as originally planned. I found the cabinets on sale at costco two weeks ago and the price was too attractive.

For now the cabinets sit in the living room until i finish the garage.

I have a couple of questions, so far, related to the paint.. Looking for some opinions on what color i should paint the moulding on the bottom of the left wall, which goes under door to house and accross the back of the garage? I was thinking paint it black , together with black around the door frame.

And... I ordered today some diamond plate outletand light switch covers. Should look real nice. I am looking for electric outlet and actual wall switch piece. Someone mentioned the brand Lutron.

Here are the pictures. I used Behr for the three colors on the wall, so hopefully it lasts a few years. Thanks to some tips here i used Frog Tape for the borders and it was great..still not perfect lines due to the texture in the wall, but much easier

Three coats plus more here and there, pia. I used a gallon and a half just on the red

I had to open the NewAge cabinets up, couldn't wait, but for now they sit in the living room. The finish and look is great! I am so glad I bought the ones that come built already.

Oh and you can see the bench top on the right side, came with my Newage cabinets.

And my wife ordered this for me. It will support my bikes (3 mountain bikes and one road bike; hopefully adding a tri bike for Christmas ).

I decided I am going to run conduit on each side of the garage for some extra outlets. I won't need much, being a single. It will be my first, so I am sure I will have questions.. ....

I want to run my lights with their own switch connected or piggybacked off the electricity in there now. I don't want to get plug in lights (thinking of 4' T8's).

Any suggestions or comments would be welcomed

Any suggestions or tips from you guys would be appreciated.. I though the epoxy would be the hard part, but now I have to piece together the rest of the garage

The Yosh pipe was partially a nostalgic purchase also, because my second motorcycle, a Ninja 600, yearsssssssssss ago, I installed my first full exhaust and it was a Yosh system, back when Eddie Lawson, Kevin Schwantz, Rainy, etc . But of course, also b/c yosh pipes are great, can't wait

Well here is an update... The floor looks great, but definitely can tell in some spots, where it might have less clear.....

Lessons learned on my first epoxy:
1. I should have given the base a second coat. One - Two spots seems lighter. Fortunately the first spot is on the far right corner where the compressor and / or generator are going
2. The first batch of flakes I threw, was too thick, but as on the first coat I did it on the far right corner. That seemed to be my test area, since I knew it wouldn't be visible.
3.I used the Legacy set up, including primer and clear, and it was great to work with and so was Scotty dealing with my questions.
4. Definitely glad I went this route vs the plastic tiles. It will be easier to keep clean and work on my bikes.

I was able to walk on it last night, about 24 hours after the second coat of clear. Now it just a matter of waiting. I've read "24 hours to walk on", "72 hours to cure", "7 Days to fully cure"... so I have to decide at what point I can put my cabinets in, hopefully this weekend, but that would be 5 days since last coat of clear on Wed. Any ideas / suggestions?

• I cut out some templates to size of my cabinets, bench, compressor to see where everything will go. I had planned on:
• Putting the bench on the far wall, to the right of the door to the house.
• On the corner, put the generator, and build a table for that area, to not lose the space.
• Then on the right wall, as you see my Newage cabinets (about 13 feet), and on the far right of the picture towards the front of the garage, my 20 gal IR compressor.

Well , that isn't going to work... not enough space on that side of the garage .

On the left wall my storage wall to hang my bikes are going , and on the left side of the garage door, no space for the compressor. I am entertaining two options:
1. Put the generator in the far right corner, and build the table to mount the compressor on top? Not sure if feasible.
2. Build a concrete slab in the backyard, and put the generator out there. And build some type of cover for it? Not sure if it's worth it for the size of generator.

44" HF Tool chest is on the right between the corner where generator is to go and the newage cabinets.

I've had it for 5 years and fortunately haven't used it. I live in south florida, so we have it as a back up generator in case of a hurricane and we loose power.

Good choices . They are two very different style of motorcycles and while I love the sport bike riding more, I also love riding the HD.

I’ve done some updates these last two weeks. Finally it’s taking shape.

Electrical outlets / Lights– I bought the supplies needed to add two electrical outlets and lights last week, but I got cold feet on the outlets. I am not ready for that right now nor time.

I am going to have to read up more on electricity; how hard could it be I thought, positive / negative / ground. But when I started looking at all the bends and turns on the conduit, I figured I’d leave that to do the end, since I don’t need it immediately. In the interim and bought an electrical outlet strip in black for the front of the garage above the bench, and have to buy another strip to put above the work bench by the New Age cabinets. I guess if I spring for one of those tube bends I will be fine. I just hate that I will probably never use it again. On the side of the cabinets by the electrical panel, I would have to make a sharp left turn, and then right with the conduit… We’ll see
As for lights, I bought two 4’ T5 2 bulb set ups. In the interim, I also got two fluorescent light bulbs for the garage opener light sockets, which helps, as well as removed the light cover on my T8 lights on there now. It helps a little bit.

Wall slats – I installed two of them for the bikes. I will finish those in the next day or two for my other two bikes.

Cabinets look great. Although 2 of the handles don't line up with the predrilled holes on the drawers, lol. SO I will just have to drill the right holes.

Air hose for the compressor is next. OMG, this thing is heavy... Any suggestions on how to mount that on the concrete? I am thinking huge toggle bolts or ?? I am putting it next to the garage door, so it's easier when I have to use outside. It's 50 feet, so that is enough to go around the care when working on it.

Well here is an updated pic. I guess for the most part i can say i an done. Now i just have the details but at least i could park my bikes and motorcycles on there.

I am going to have to post some better pics with my digital camera as these iphone pics arent looking right for some reason. Maybe the sharp red wall and lights confuses it

I am not sure on how the slat walls came out for the bikes. I think it looks "crowded".

I am going to hold off on installing more outlets for now [emoji24] and go with one of those electric strip outlets on the far wall. Time us running out.

Its very hard to make a single look anything but crowded, especially when you add bikes. Smart plan though to get them up and off the ground. I was lucky enough when i had my single to be able to put them in the mudroom adjacent to the garage.

Thanks for your comment. I knew going in it was going to be tough , but I was tracking your single and others' on here so figured I'd give it a shot, lol. I might have to get rid of my wife's and son's bikes lol... They wouldn't be too thrilled though.

I am thinking to move two further back towards the back wall, giving more room between the other two. I do have bike stands, to just put them on the ground but not sure if that would help but at the same time take up floor space , then the floor would look crowded lol.

Those cabinets must be the Performance line in 24 gauge? Looks like there's only 3 drawers on the tool cabinet. Are they matte finished or glossy? Congrats they look great.

Yes those are the ones, 3 drawers but haven't put the handles on since they don't align, lol... It's the glossy finish..
