if thats what it is ,then it was probably never finished because there is no place for mounting. the frame is a alum casting that was later machined maybe there was a clamp base so it would stand.

Well the vise was made just under an hour outside of Columbus.

Purely coincidence, I assure you. My method for choosing colors is this.

1.) Decide how many colors I need. Two here, obviously.
2.) Walk to dark corner of garage where boxes of half-full spray paint cans I purchased at garage sales are stacked.
3.) Blindly stick each hand into a random box and grab a can. Shake it, if there's not enough then set that can down and grab another.
4.) Walk into the light and see what color(s) the current vise is going to be.
5.) Occasionally, after looking at the cans, choke up a little bile into the back of my mouth.

The cast is broke around the outside of the top pin on the dynamic jaw but it should not affect performance since when you clamp a pipe, it pushes on the jaws/pin but it is an eyesore. I paid more than I wanted(or should have) but this is the first 100+ lb vise I have seen in person and thanks to a couple members here guestimating prices for me, I think I'll be able to at least get my money back if not make a lil something for my time/effort cleaning it up. Should I attempt to weld that ear back around the pin or leave it alone? I only have access to a mig atm and no oxy/acet, just a propane or map gas to preheat.

nine4, once you clean it up then post pictures of the broken area, maybe one of us can give recommendation on a repair. Nice find, not everyone gets a shot at a Reed C series vise. Finding a experienced TIG welder will fix that crack. Great find.

First of all I blame all of you guys for this. If it wasn't for this thread I would have never had an interest in vises other than for just the basic repair work in my shop. When I got my Craftsman (Reed) vise I started looking at this thread for advise and have learned quite a bit. And have really enjoyed the vintage iron restorations.

So here is my purchase. A big guy. A Parker 69. I have no idea what I will do with this guy when I'm done with it. It is in need of a handle and a good clean up.

Just picked up this Reed 33 from the local CL today!
Jaws are in great shape,but it's missing the Pipe Jaws.

Makes my Reed 205R look smaller !

^^^ - I believe ERON vices were painted the same blue as Records. Is that one of the colours you can see on the vice? I have also seen some restored in the bright yellow that you clearly have on yours. They are good quality vices.

I have a really different, large bench vise. Mfg. by Hartmann Vise Co. Racine Wi. USA. 4 1/2" jaws in excellent condition. Does not crank tight like ordinary vises but you manually close the jaws onto the piece to be clamped then cinch it tight with the lever. Move the lever back and forth to tighten more. Swivel works perfect. This is a pretty large vise and very heavy. $80.00 obo/ trade? Call or Text 262-384-1705

MCM: first time I've seen a vise like that. very interesting indeed.

Porsche: the Eron vises i own and have owned have been a blackish brown color, but as i always say your vise your color. also if you also got the Mac tool boxes they are keepers and worth spending the time and money for a restoration too.

Nines: glad to hear you pulled the trigger on the Reed 3C and i'm sure you will figure out a way to improve the issue on the dynamic's pipe jaw.

Our eyesight isn't so good either; however, many of us are able to sense small differences in the gravitational pull of heavy metal tool shaped objects.

Yep his is a no34. I found his original post when i was doing research on my no.32. And man i must say i like these bases i torqued a bolt to 150lbs yesterday and the swivel base didn't even think of budging. It makes me wonder why they fell out of style and also i have the original base with mounting holes by the center stud and only one lock down tooth versus the "newer" style having mounting feet and two lock down teeth. So if mine wont move i cant imagine the "newer" versions.

Riggs: looks like a Columbian or it might be a Morgan. an 8 inch Reed weighs closer to 275 pounds. it looks a little rough, but all the parts are there from what i can see.

Riggs: it's my daughter's dog (my grand dog) and he is a mix and becoming a great dog. they rescued him from a shelter when he was about 8 months old and might have weighed 25 pounds and you could count all his ribs. now he might be 70 pounds, just turned 2 years old and we actually ask to babysit him. all you dog lovers might like this. my daughter and son in law taught him to **** in the weeds so when we take walks he runs into the weeds to do his business.

JW: if it's too much trouble to ship to Outlaw you can surely make me your back up since we didn't mean to make you buy another vise.

Brat: nice Reed and how much does that awesome stand weigh and if you want to share how you made it i started a vise stands thread where you can do so.

Thanks PC06, I think there is some blue on it. Kind of a medium dark blue. I was transporting to the vice and tried to remove the traveling parts from the stationary parts, like I have done many time with other vices, and it has an end stop. I have not looked a it closely but it there a tick to getting it apart?

Yes, I ended up with a ton of tools but most are either poor quality or poor condition. I have the mate to the MAC box and plan on restoring the set. I also got a mid-60's or 70's Snap-On box.

I plan to strip and powder coat all three. If the cost is too much then I'll spray them myself.

The ERON may get hammertone paint like my Wiltons.

you might post pictures with questions over on the vise repair 101 thread to see if the guys and gals following that thread can help you. my guess is to knock the pin out that holds the vise nut in place then remove the sleeve or spring holding the main screw in the dynamic and take it apart.

JP: of course you will be picking up the 8 incher because that giant steel magnet is working well in your shop. is it a Columbian?

porschedude996TT - If your ERON is like a Record, and I'm pretty sure it is, there are 2 pins that are tapped into the main screw. The front pin is about 1/8" in dia. and the rear one is about 1/4".

To remove the end stop, open the vice to its maximum and you should be able to access the pin and end stop. According to your picture your vice isn't mounted on a bench. You should be able to flip it over and tap the pin out with a punch from the underside. If it was mounted you might be able to clamp a vice grip on it and wiggle it out upward. It's better to tap it out from the bottom if you can though. The end stop can then be pulled out toward the rear of the vice.

The front pin is bit trickier. It retains a washer and spring under tension. You have to remove it from the underside of the dynamic jaw. Tap it out as far as you can without jamming it into the underside of the jaw (if it does you won't be able to rotate the screw). Rotate the screw 180* and pull the pin out with a pair of pliers. I've seen several of these pins bend while being taken out because of the spring tension. They are pretty easy to straighten with a hammer before putting them back in.

You may have to remove your swivel base before doing the above but I'm sure you planned to do that anyway. I've never done a ERON but Records come apart pretty easily and it's worth the effort. That's a nice vice and well worth putting some time into.
