Just scored two brand new 4.0 red lithium M18 batteries, and a brand new M18 charger for $145 on e-bay, with free shipping. Between this and the drill I bought last week on e-bay, I have a total of $197 in my pieced-together drill kit. That's much cheaper than the same manufactured kit, plus I have the 4.0 batteries instead of the thin standards, or the XC batteries.

Seems like it can be a lot less expensive buying the individual parts and pieces, than the kits from a brick-and-mortar store.

Which Milwaukee M18 impact do you guys prefer? The 1/4" hex tool, or the 3/8" square drive?

Have the best of both worlds. Get the 3/8's impact and a 1/4 hex adapter. http://www.milwaukeetool.com/accessories/fastening/48-03-4405 I have this combination and it works out well. The only time it's a problem is if you are working in very tight places because it's a little longer then the straight hex tool.

This. If you can only have one get the 3/8" square with adapter to hex, not the other way around.

I bought one of these last week and it's an awesome compact square to bit impact adapter (and can't beat a Snap-On for under $8 shipped)

Quoting these for myself for future reference. I think I may go this route when my Hitach impact driver dies. It seems like when I use it with 1/4" bits clearance is rarely an issue. But when I use it with an adapter and sockets I'm always in some tight space. Using an impact wrench with an adapter seems to make more sense to me than using an impact driver with an adapter. I'll just pick up a 12V impact driver for tight spaces.

We've had long-winded debates before about whether you lose any appreciable torque going 1/4" hex to sq drive. I still maintain you do.

But as for OAL of the tool, see post #17 here

The newer Fuel stuff may have changed this, not sure.

I'm all over this myself right now. I've been jonesing for some new drills since I bought my house last year and some projects are starting to pop up. I have an old 9.6v Makita and 9.6v Dewalt I used to use when I did car stereo stuff. Bought these drills maybe 10-12 years ago. My Makita charger died so I havent used my drill in a couple years now but I have two batteries and the flashlight. My dewalt works fine but I always felt it was a little big for what it was and I've gone through a few batteries with it. I'm currently down to one battery and of course its always dead when I go to grab it to use. Recently when doing some work on my car I finally decided I need to look at a new drill. I was trying to drill out a broken bolt in the frame rail. I was able to do it but only after much cussing, sweating and babying the drill along. It was super hot when I was done! lol. Thing kept hanging up and I burned down the battery twice in the process. It just doesn't have the guts to do stuff like that.

But anyway after looking at DeWalts and Makitas I think I came around to the Milwaukees and after signing up here and looking around the last couple days I'm pretty much sold on the FUEL series Milwaukees. Do I NEED them? Probably not but I tend to overkill on tools, I'd rather have something when I need it than not. I've always been a tool junky, but I try to find deals when I can. I wish I could find this 100 dollar deal in Houston right now. I like that 2797-22 combo kit but I think I'm going to start with a M12 Fuel combo with the hammer/driver drill and the impact. I may not need the 2797-22 but like I said I'd like to have both around when the needs arise. I'm doing more around the house and I'm sure the M12 will cover most of that, but I also do a lot of mechanic work on my cars and the bigger impact and drill might come in handy there as well. I'm sure that 18v Drill would have made my work on drilling out that frame rail bolt much easier.

So...anyone in Houston that has seen the 100 dollar off deal or anything similar? I'm kinda holding out to find something for the 2797 because its pricey, but I may track down the M12 FUEL kit now if I can find a good deal online like today lol.
