Never EVER let anyone control your money.

Especially a woman.

I don't personally see it as a "control" situation - she and I are partners, not adversaries. When it really boils down, I make most of the money, and what is left over after expenses is pretty much mine to spend as I see fit, but she is important to me, so I include her in the decision making.

When my wife and I got married I was working as a mechanic, and am now an electrician my tools have been what put food on the table from day one so she understood. Beyond that she actually bought almost every tool (not related to work) in the shop. And in at least in one instance tried to hide the cost from me.

If my wife asks how much I spent for something I tell her. I wish she would take more interest in my tools. She loves taking rides in the old cars so she's half way there.

My wife checks out after about 30 seconds if I talk about tools. Usually, I buy stuff to make money with, by either using it to make money, or flipping it for money. Small stuff she doesn't sweat over. Big purchases I usually use offset funds to pay for, ie, overtime at work, side jobs or profit from buying/selling. And for all of my large purchases, they are worth at least what I paid for them, if not more.

I have an even worse problem! She wants her own Snap-On ratchet when I get one! I had to order some x-small Mechanix gloves for her too! But thats why we are together...

My wife drives about 185 km (115 miles) to and from work every day. She knows what we spend on her car maintenance. She knows what her coworkers spend on their cars, including the ones that drive way less than her.

I don't think she'd say anything even if they weren't saving us a fortune.

My wife is super cool about tool purchases but I have nothing to hide either as she can see all of my purchases. I am not a professional mechanic or contractor but have used my tools to save us tons of money on car repairs/maint. and have used them to do tons of work on the house. She never questions my tool purchases as I either get quality used hand tools (pawn shops, etc) or I buy new power tools. She works super hard for our family with a full timie job and being a mother. I work full time too and we live within our means. If I spend anything more than $50 I will usually tell her and if there is an issue we work it into the budget. Of course it never hurts that I use my tools to save her parents money either with repairs :)

My problem would be that my wife is not into clothes, makeup, jewelry or purses, so none of this *** for tat bs. Except, we have separate accounts and I pay 65% of all bills as I have a higher income.
She's saving to pay cash for a Challenger.
I can buy any tool I please but am about done buying them.

No wife, so I only have to lie to myself. The fewer people involved the easier it is to pull off a successful lie.

Haven't had to hide tool purchases from the woman, and she's generally pretty cool about buying new tools. To be honest, if she does raise an objection it's usually a valid one (ie "you don't need a 4th drill press"). The father-in-law is a manager at Lowe's and gets the inside track on returns, closeouts, clearance items, etc. and will often text me sick deals that he gets on tools. Also, since the girl and I bought our house, my tool collection has grown exponentially by retooling for home projects (wood) from auto projects (metal).

I consider tools an investment, as such I usually only buy tools that I can immediately sell for more money, or using them saves money. Lets face it, if you're looking at an item on craiglist, the clock is ticking and waiting to get a kitchen pass to buy it is the often the same as not buying it at all. I just scored a ryobi resaw, craftsman block grinder and box full of sandpaper rolls for 400$, and today just bought a tool post grinder for $200. I could easily double my money on these items but I wouldnt have them at all if I waited for the wife to get home, chat her up...gauge her mood... you know the drill. I think as long as it makes more sense than adding to the pile of shoes at the bottom of the closet, you're safe. WTF is it with women and shoes, anyway?

My wife never complains about tool purchases because I fix everything.

What I do is ask her what it would cost for someone else to do it.

Them to build a deck $5,000. Me? 2,500 + $500 saw.

$2000 savings and a new tool that can be used for years.

If I have the tools then it's cheap. But if I don't have the tools it's almost always cheaper for me to get new tools and do the job myself.

I will say, she balks about the price, but she knows how much I save annually on auto repairs. I even sometimes have her or the kids go get an estimate on a repair before I knock it out in a couple of hours or the afternoon.
She'll just shake her head in disbelief that what I did in an afternoon saved us sometimes $1200.

I like that idea. Sometimes my wife questions whether I'm giving reasonable quotes that we would be paying to have someone else do it. Next time a vehicle needs repair, I'm sending her to get a quote.

When you have a toolbox the size of a minivan...it's not something you can hide. My wife has never ever complained about my tool purchases. But every time I do a job on one of the family fleet, I always tell her something like, "I just did the valve cover gaskets on our X5, and saved us $800." (And yes, it takes that long...dealers have been known to charge as much as double that figure).

My philosophy is that anything that makes a job easier gets purchased...and usually Snap-on. Since I buy most tools on eBay, I can justify buying Snap-on when I pay ~40% of new prices, (even though I'm not a professional). I'd farm out even less if I could fit a lift in my garage.
