I finished up the details on the latest set of Commando valve covers and got them wrapped and packed.







Then blasted on a k-member for awhile, unpacked and inspected the next two jobs in line (outgassing right now in fact) -- some HD parts and yet another pair of MP small block valve covers with matching air cleaner lid and a Spectre hold down -- and still have to type up the Commando guy's bill tonight. Amidst all of that I cooked up some oven fried chicken, au gratin potatoes, garlic bread and sweet corn, cleaned the cat boxes, swept the floor and hauled the trash to the road.

And it's the freakin the middle of October and 65 degrees!!!! I'm digging this weather while wishing it would last all year.

Meanwhile, Billy's been in bed for the last 3 days whining. Sorry, it's just the plain truth that sick or injured men whine and whimper and try their best to make us feel sorry for them, presumably to invoke the maternal instincts so we stop everything we're trying to do in order to take care of them while simultaneously doing all of that stuff I did up there ^^^). The poor dear said sitting on the floor working on the bathroom remodel the last few days did him in.
So maybe I need to finish the bathroom tonight too.

I have no idea why women make up the majority of nurses as most seem to have no empathy for the sick, poor Billy might be half dead up there! My wife is the same, if she's ill I run around taking up cups of tea and nice food etc etc, when I'm ill, I get half a day and thats it, after that I'm milking it apparently.

Reorganized my toolbox, then replaced the wheels on my air compeessor then pulled out the snowblower to see if the old girl starts and she did!! First pull, man i love this thing... its older than i.

Now i just have to change the oil and we should be good for another crazy winter.

Physics? I really don't know if there is a name for it. My buddy Matt is a tool and die maker and setting up a home shop. He saw the idea somewhere and implemented it. I've got lots of footage I need to edit which will also go into the design on the hoist. Maybe over the next week or so I will get it done.

It looks like a shear leg device. I suppose it worked well for your friend but it seems quite risky without the legs being constrained from moving towards the jeep.

Took apart the dash in the wife's car to replace a burned out backlight for her odometer. To her, its one of those "urgent" repairs because she is about to turn over 200k miles and doesn't want to miss it.

Ya, I think that is what it is called. "shear leg device".

Once the weight is on the structure there is really not much risk of slipping. We did have an issue while trying to raise it where the bottom slid out, but once the weight of the mill was on, it was not moving anywhere.

Nice filming and photograph work Jim. My hat is off to you for getting into the filming arena. I had a few people ask for some video style reviews of my lathe and mill when I took delivery a couple of months ago. I created a youtube account and did a few videos now and it is not as easy as it looks.

I had to make several takes and my son did a great job of editing them but it is harder to talk to a camera than it is a person. Maybe not harder, but it takes some getting used to. I also wanted to sound professional and not make a fool of myself which is probably why I had to redo several parts. My son said they sounded fine but I wasn't happy with them at first.

Again, my deepest appreciation for doing videos and becoming good at it.

Thanks! You are right. It takes a lot of practice and time to make half decent videos. I shot for three hours last night and will likely have a solid 5 minutes of video in the end. But, it should be helpful to others who are timid about disassembling the bodywork on their $25K+ motorcycles.

Worked on my buddy's Artic Cat 300 ATV. Had water in the gas, clogged needle jet, clogged passage in the3 carburetor throat, busted petcock. Would idle but nothing else. Got it running 95%, still falters under heavy throttle when approaching shift point. Need to make one more adjustment on the needle jet.
threw up and came inside to lay down. Flu I think.

Spent a little time trying to get a Troy Bilt chainsaw working that was given to me. after a good clean out it can idle (at 3.5 turn out, eeek) but not rev up. ordered a diaphram kit tonight. well see how she goes next week. Just got to get her running well enough to sell new Husq coming for x-mas.

While taking a break from all the cleaning I decided to make my wrenchs a little easier to ready. Convinced the lovely wife to go to the store for me and 30 mins later I have black blue and red nail polish. A coupe of hours later this is the result.

Got a starter solenoid put on my craftman mower and charged the battery.
Pulled the flywheel cover off my free snapper tiller to replace the pull cord.

Once again, didn't get much done in the shop due to other life responsibilities. Covered the A/C unit and blew out the sprinkler system and cleaned rain gutters in preparation for winter. YUCK! Have I mentioned how much I hate winter?

After it got dark I did hurry and get a little mod done to my lathe that I have wanted to do for a couple months now. I have always liked the dials on the Hardinge lathes. They are a small knurled thumbscrew that you loosen, turn to the setting/measurement you want, lock the thumbscrew and machine.

The dials on most lathes use a "friction" style of holding the dials to the handle. Clean, simple, work well but when trying to dial to a setting you have to hold the handle to keep it from turning while turning the dial to the setting and overcoming that friction between the dial and handle. I have used that style for 26+ years at work as well as on my last lathe but that Hardinge lathe that I used once 20+ years ago just stuck in my head. I had to do that to mine.

Here is the dial and handle removed from my cross slide.

Clamped in the mill vise.

Drilled and now tapping to a 10-32 thread.

Completed and reinstalled on the cross slide.

I then went ahead and did the same thing to the compound slide.

Overall I love the modification and took about a half hour. Should have done this months ago when I first set the lathe up.

Hopefully tonight I can get another little project done that I have wanted to do for a while. Machine some screw jacks.

Took the Corvette out in the early morning fog to get it aligned. I got it back about an hour ago and the immense joy I feel right is immeasurable.

It's been since 83 that the car has been safely on the road. Dad did a bulk of the work before he passed in '06, with some help from me and I did the suspension and wiring. I'm looking forward to some driving before winter hits.

whacked myself with a grinder. lost the material out of the vise and got some kickback when it went flying. kinda *****, right across the left thumb nail at the base - nice 1/8" groove right thru it, about halfway across the nail. gonna **** at some point. that'll teach me not to pull that **** tight as hell.
however, i now have a good protector for the drive attachment on the troybilt chipper that will protect it in a fall.

Haaa, thanks darlin! I'm happy to report I'm feeling better today and the valve cover and its matching custom oil caps are cooling off now.

This one was the replacement for my customer who broke a dog ear upon installation (which has since been discovered is a factory defect as far as I'm concerned with nearly 200 people coming forward just since July, advising the same thing happened on theirs in exactly the same spot). He had it welded up by a 'talented professional' but he says he'll "always know it's there, and it still looks like ***" so he had me do another one.



If you own a pair of big block Mopar Performance valve covers, please read this.

I'll post up a pic of the solo valve cover later on but it'll look pretty much just like these.





Well ... after yesterday lemme say I HOPE it looks just like those. LOL!!! Without any cracks of course.

Even with mismatched valve covers, one custom and one stock, he's still been bringing home lots of trophies this summer.

I took a five-minute break from my bathroom projects (at the tail end of a double bathroom remodel)and made a safari top out of a junk soft top. I'm going to get a boat cover shop to do a little finish stitching and I'll run this top when I've got the kids in the back.

Father's Day we're spending out at Moab... there's a lot of stuff to do to the rig before then. Axles, tcase, steering, wheels, tires, lift, etc. Soon there'll be lots of shop projects.

Got to get these bathrooms done, first.
