I wanted American made. Guess not as SKF purchased Peer back in '08. Peer with mfg in China says they are wholly owned, independent brand. Funny they say that and then put their bearing in a SKF box.

I bought a timken bearing for my Saturn SL1 and a to.ken hub assembly for my Buick rendezvous and they were both made in the united States of America. Depends on application and manufacturer.

SKF Explorer series bearings are my go-to bearing for motor bearing replacement on older machine tools. I rarely get USA-made ones anymore. However, SKF-branded bearings that are actually made by SKF are unlike typical import tools, since SKF builds factories abroad that can machine to very high tolerances (or so I was assured by several people in the bearings business when I asked this on the practicalmachinist forums). I can't speak to other manufacturers, though.

They can make some pretty good stuff.
You just have to pay for it.
(Still cheaper than US or European made.)
We wouldn't let them on the International Space Station, so they built their own.
With parts made in China.

At one time making ball bearings was considered a national defense capability that was protected by the Feds. In case of war, we needed to be able to make weapons of war, think planes, tanks, jeeps, ships, here in the USA in case we were embargoed by another country. Over the years we have sent most of those capabilities overseas (see China), so here we are with china made SKF bearings.

So sad......

SKF (Svenska Kullagerfabriken AB) is a Swedish company. Always has been.

I always try to find the size in a Timken. But even with any global supplier, there will always be lines or sizes within lines of product that are made in China.

i think SKF actually stands for Schweizerische Kugellager Fabrik ?!?

at least that is what i was thinking when i grew up in Switzerland lol
... but who knows i`m maybe wrong

Steinmetz is right, SKF is a swedish company. It was two guys from SKF (Gabrielsson and Larsson) who started Volvo Cars in the 1920´s with financing from SKF. Another large quality-bearing company in Europe is german *** (most known for railroad stuff).
Edit: Just have to add: I´ve just changed cv-joints on my old Range Rover (1990). The wheel bearings are Timken USA, still rollin´ after 340.000 km! (date-marked 8-90) The cv-joint were also the originals, made by GKN. Amazing durability.

Carter is a small bearing manufacturer in Michigan. Depends what bearings you are after. They make a custom piece for us. Also have standards.

I recently spoke to a guy who was a pr guy for Timken bearings when they built there first factory in China. He said they were open about where their bearings were made unlike some competitors.

I just picked up a few hundred skf bearings and all are either France, Italy, or Switzerland. Probably old stock markets though.

Hi , last SKF bearings I nearly bought were ' made in Mexico ' marked on the box .Not being to sure I returned them to the suppier who was shocked that i didn't want them , I then looked at the other bearings that were Said to be for the same vehicle made by SNR that again just didn't look or feel right ( no seal lip and decidedly half finished look). decision made on the spot and purchased new bearings from main dealer that were light and day in comparison .

Agh just tried to rebuild the gearbox with the bearings I got from NAPA and found all four were the wrong width/thickness.

Just now getting back to the thread. SKF makes thousands of bearings each day here in the US. I see at a couple of them everyday. We have factories in Asia, Europe, South America, (may have some in S. Africa, not sure) Canada, Mexico and the US. The seals may have been made in Mexico but the bearing made in the US. All factories have to meet the same ISO specifications so no matter where it was made if it has SKF on it it should be a good one. I would also think most of the other major manufacturers are the same way. If the only bearings I could get for something was a Timken or ***, I wouldn't hesitate to use them.
Bearings are considered to be a highly needed item for national security IE: good targets for the enemy. It was a little haunting to walk around the factory in Steyr Austria knowing we dropped bombs there during WWII.

Being that I deal with SKF on the seal side of things. I know that the have factories and partner ships with factory all over the world. There are many factor that go into where parts are made, for example quality, quantities, and the such. But some of the factory are not the best and although SKF tries to maintain quality at these locations, things happen and you can be there to baby sit every second. As my company deals with them and we work on a project with SKF and it didn't go very well as we had back quality issues. It seems as thought even SKF can not control what factory works do in oversee when they aren't always there.
