That "ID Plate" is really nice to see on there.
A little added history for it.

Here, I added primer. The brazing started on the back end of the slider that a previous owner used as an anvil:
You can tell, I was seriously considering going ahead and keeping it at this point. I had learned that the slider probably could not be welded and being brazed would lack strength.

I used the vice quite a lot today. It's covered in dust and dirt from use (Just todays) which makes me wonder if I went the right way on the color scheme.

I may decide to do-over and paint it all black and letter in with white.

Re: Reed 406 Rear swivel

well i brought it home tonight the guy would not budge one dollar on it i cleaned it up a little to take a couple picks the rear pin is froze up but everything else worked freely the swivel handles had a large gob of grease inside each one which was cool loosened them with my fingers when i went to spin the swivel to line the other draw bolt up the large pivot screw turned screwed it out with my fingers and the jaws are really nice, one of the balls fell off from the handle and it looks like they practiced welding some letters on the other ball go figure.
a nice polished handle turned up and the rear jaw un frozen this ones a keeper
been looking for a large rear swivel for a while and this thing is heavy,
oh look at the tag that will be going back on it

Congrats. That thing looks massive, what is the overal length?

72CZ.---That's a good buy on that 206 if someone wanted a good heavy, dependable vise.---I have a 206 and it's 153 lbs., but that one is a 206 R, so I would say it's a little heaver.---Someone could probably chime in on the weight of one at this point.---That one looks like it's in pretty good shape to.

Tedsters: glad to hear you picked up the Reed 406 and i'm sure you'll like having it on your bench. if you do take off that tag and re install it after your restoration can you post before and after pictures over on the Vise Repair 101 thread because I'm curious and i'm sure there are others that would like to tag their vises?

ALL: so i had a fellow GJ member and friend pick up a vise for me the other day so i don't actually have it in my hands yet, but will soon. it is a Monarch 223 made by Prentiss vise company and it has 6 inch wide jaws and weighs over 100 pounds. it has one flaw that I've seen so far on the back slide there is a hairline crack so i posted it over on the Vise Repair 101 thread and already had Carla explain how she would have repaired it which is a good read if you all want to learn to braze a vise. also it is my first Monarch vise and looking forward to having a lion's head staring at me.

Ignore the wonky bench grinder. What kind of vise is that in the background. This is a pic from an upcoming auction...

It might also be an old Millers Falls. It looks like it has the squared indentation like in the ads below, but the grinder makes it hard to see. They also used a cylinder instead of balls on the handle ends for some of their vises.

Re: Reed 406 Rear swivel

Worth it !!! That's going to be great when your finished!

Any idea if not having patent dates on it is because it's seventeen years
after the last patent date or before the patents were even issued?

.
Looks like radial cut jaw teeth - made after patent 1048100 (1912). Since that patent (and the other two) are not cited, to me that means the vise was made after the patent expired.

Looks like the swivel base has four feet - best I can determine Reed went to four footed bases in early/mid 1930s. If there are only 3 feet, then no later than about 1935. (You can also check the pin holding the nut in place, is it a small pin or the larger pin with set screw? - That and four feet would put it 1935/1938)

Defense Plant Corporation established August 22, 1940.

How about:
If four feet, after the mid 1930's but before the DPC was dissolved July 1, 1945

If three feet, between 1931 and 1935.

CNGsaves / va. Here is a 938 I just finished today. The top bar had an arch and I had to put the spacer in the rear to keep it from binding. It was well used in it's working life. I did all I could but you can only shine a turd so much. It does work fairly smooth.
It is a cam lever that just drops the pin in holes in the base. I had to replace the small pin that rides on the inside of the cam. Another odd thing is the main nut goes in side ways and is held with pins in each side of the main body.

I like it, Nice vise GETRIDAONE. I would love to see that 938 a little closer, curious to the swivel lock mechanism.

A lot of neat stuff here. Have not posted much so I'll give it a go.
Have lots of vises which I stopped counting at 18. That's ones that attach to a bench anyway.

Have one that I need to identify-
VISES 005.jpg

One I need some measurements for some parts if someone has a Reed 403 1/2-
Vises 021.jpg

I need measurements on all the swivel base clamp pcs, especially the toothed bolt head-
Vises 032.jpg
Vises 036.jpg
Vises 028.jpg

Here is the most recent addition that just got done, a Parker No.4x
PO said it weighs 105lbs. I believe him-
Vises 040.jpg

Some of the kids, some of which will be adopted out-
Vises 042.jpg

If you know of someone who has the Reed for the measurements that would be great, want to get it finished up.

Thanks Much,
Mike Scott

Manychines, I made a drawing of a 206-r swivel lock and threaded stud, you might be able to customize this drawing to your size. The distance between your teeth is important, the radius the teeth are cut at is fairly easy to figure out from your base. Just try to match the teeth casted in your base.

KM Scott- You're right I really have everything needed to make the parts, including the toothed head. Nice to see the upper pcs. Probably will put a longer handle on that and put a radius on the "nut". Don't really care for the look of the more square (non-radius) nuts and screw ends. Sorry you Wilton guys-

This is either the largest swivel compound vise I have ever seen or the dolly is super small. I just may call him tomorrow to just get a guesstimate on its weight. It looks firkin huge!

http://chicago.craigslist.org/sox/tls/4717440501.html

The ad says 6" compound vise. Assuming that is the jaw width as it is not a sine vise. Largest compound I've seen. If it was $250 less I'd say thanks for the lead. :)

Mike, I measured my swivel clamp parts from my Reed 1C (same base as 203 1/2)

Hopefully KM Scott doesn't get upset with me for modifying his drawing!

PS just noticed you have a 403 1/2 swivel jaw nice score!

Oldie: the next picture of the other side of the Emmert tells a different story. it has a couple of the biggest sloppiest welds holding it together I've ever seen. no mention of it in the ad either. I'd say take a pass and get something better especially for that much money.

Many: nice crew of vises and welcome to GJ

VA: that Reed 406 looks a little lonely on his end of the chain. he needs a friend so you might want to ship him to me until you find a 408 or 209. thanks for sharing pictures of it.
