I have a Big Maxx MHU50 that I am installing and I'm not real clear on the venting. I'm using 3" Type B vent with the necessary accessories (thimble, fire stop, cap etc) but I'm not real clear on the use of a draft hood?

Are there certain conditions when a draft hood is required?

Thanks.

Do whatever the installation manual says. You can't go wrong that way.

If the appliance is a Category I appliance, as it must be using B-vent then the draft hood is required. The purpose of the DH is to separate the appliance from the vent. If you do not use it a strong wind can create a Venturi affect on the burner and lift the flame off and you have an outage. As well, the DH allows dilution air and alters the dew point minimizing the chance of condensation in the vent.

I am not familiar with the specifics of your appliance, but those are the functions of the DH.

That's a power vented unit , no draft hood required. And you better use the proper pipe called for.
And there vent kit is a B - Vent set up that is sold with the unit as an extra ?
