mirrors are seen on most wood machinist chests to this day. the covered ones are usually quite old . search for gerstner on google and you may find pics. they may even have a new version of that type of box. i have a newer gerstner. if it is in decent condition it can be restored . buy it if you can get it reasonable

as bizzare as it sounds the mirror was supplied so you could see a metal chip in your eye & hopefully remove it.

cut the **** on the worthless thread. this thread will only be worthless if he misses the deal. he knows nothing about the box and needs help. the only thing worthless is to tell him he is worthless because he didn't get a picture. if he gets it and then doesn't get us a picture then get on him.

The Craftsmen machinist boxes were made by Union a competitor to Gerstner. I have never seen a leatherette covered one, the covered chest were often made of ash or other plain wood as opposed to quarter sawn oak.

I have two oak Union chests and two Gerstner boxes, my restored Union is the nicest of the lot. The one in the pictures is likely a Craftsmen with out the tag, my other chest has the tag but it is apart for refinish. I will dig it out and get a pic of the tag tomorrow.

The worst fight I ever saw in our shop happened over one of these boxes. A young man tipped over another workers box and it landed on it's back, it broke the back off ever drawer in it. Who would have ever thought that Bill being well into his 60s could kick @ss like he did. The young man, after he healed up, did the right thing and had it repaired.leroy

old man strength is real.

Yup,

I have a friend just turned 62 who got into it with a 20 something at work. Took 5 guys to pull him off all in their 20's-30's He was pissed about the younger mans boasting how great he was and poor work ethic. The adjustment helped a bit.

I could see that happening!!! The older guys that had the wooden boxes took pride in them. Sort of a status thing.

Definately a pride thing, just like someone borrowing a tool without asking damaging it at returning it without a single word. I have a couple of really nice Gerstner boxes at work and if I had the same thing happen there would have to be some quick talking before the fists fly also.

He'd probably been listening to that 20 something spout off for awhile and just couldn't take it anymore. Amazing the strength you can muster when you reach your boiling point! :pimpflash

My dad always said it was Old age and cunning that would win out over youth and strength any day. I learned after my first summer mining it was easier to keep my mouth shut unless called upon than open it up and get into an argument even if they were wrong, because if they were right I looked smart for shutting up and if they were wrong I got paid time and half.
