Magnetic starter suggestion

I'm reworking my shop and like the idea of adding magnetic starters for both my table saw and compressor. The saw is 3hp and the compressor 5hp, both single phase. A search of previous threads indicates there are all kinds of features to choose from. That said, I'd like something that's durable and averages out well without going overboard. Any suggestions?

Yeah... don't waste your money on something that's not needed.

I would suggest NEMA type starters over IEC type much more rugged & easier to size, and limit the search to SQ D, Allen-Bradley, or Furnas (now Siemens), and avoid any starters with definite purpose contactors, Grizzly & others sell IEC starters of dubious Asian origin that I would run like hell from.

Being that neither have a decent switch (lightning damage), something's needed. I'll look into the NEMA starters and see what I can find.

For the table saw I would look for a NEMA size 1, in a NEMA type 1(indoor) enclosure & a start/stop cover control kit would be a nice option, I prefer NEMA type 12 (dust tight / oil tight) for wood working machinery but we are trying to keep things simple & there are plenty of machines w/ NEMA 1 enclosures.

Lightning damage? Huh?

Both pieces of equipment came from a shop that took a direct hit (common here in FL). I've replaced the cabinet saw motor but still need an on/off switch. The compressor has a new motor and pressure switch on the way, I just don't want to run it straight to the breaker box.

I like the idea of a dust tight NEMA box. The control cover would be a nice touch for the saw. It's not overboard if it serves a needed purpose!

I have a NEMA 4X stainless steel enclosure on my Rockwell 6"X48" belt sander, since it's used for metal and wood would rather keep debris out of the starter can, type 12 would have been fine but had the 4X enclosure so used it.


NEMA 4X gear goes for big bucks, enough that having a healthy ticker & maybe wearing Depends when they tell you the price.
