Just wondered if this small clamped table vise would be any good ?

http://www.dolex-vices.com/bench-vices/clamp-vices/professional-clamp-vices/

EtauxAgrafePro.jpg

Or maybe Proxxon ?

ProxxonViseWithRivetTool.jpg

I'm looking for something rather small and I can remove easily. What about suction cups bases ?

I can't tell you anything about those particular vises, but clamp on and especially suction cup vises are extremely light duty use. Like model making level. The suction cup vises REQUIRE a nice clean smooth surface to get and keep suction, and even then are often a struggle to keep attached.

Many clamp on vises have a couple of counter sunk holes to add wood screws to help secure them for a reason...

Thanks Outlaw, that's what I thought.
I'll wait a bit to find a proper small vise but won't get the clamp thing (almost $140 here for the small Dolex in my post).

Here is a late model Reed 105-S recently acquired. Has the replaceable T-Jaws and modern logo. Used but not abused. Lots of little cuts but nothing serious, overall pretty clean. Doesn't look like it's been pounded on. Now I just need to find a 6" & 8"...

Big thanks to 72CZ for picking this up for me!

Hemdale; find a smaller bench vise mount it to a piece of ply with either Tee Nuts in the ply, or counter sunk bolts up from the bottom, and C-clamp that to a table. The ply will protect the table, and the clamp is unlikely to damage the bottom of the table/bench you clamp to visibly.

That's what I did. Countersunk carriage bolts coming up through the plywood worked great. I've even seen these with a sheet of cork or rubber on the underside of the plywood for extra protection.

Also ID'd this one that GETRIDAONE and I have. Someone else has one too, but I can't remember who it is. Millers Falls lists it as a Railroad vise in a 1912 catalog. Like the one above, it appears similar to the earlier Union and Backus vises, so it could also be one of those before they became part of Millers Falls.
<a href="http://s1226.photobucket.com/user/fgrefe/media/Vises/1912MillersFallsRailroadvise_zpsb06c5d64.png.html" target="_blank"><img src="http://i1226.photobucket.com/albums/ee420/fgrefe/Vises/1912MillersFallsRailroadvise_zpsb06c5d64.png" border="0" alt="Millers Falls railroad vise 1912 photo 1912MillersFallsRailroadvise_zpsb06c5d64.png"/></a>
Here is his on a super cool stand:

Mine on a not so cool stand:

There is one of these on Ebay for the economical sum of $1,300 including shipping. Pretty nifty design and definitely different. The OldToolHeaven.com has a little information on the Vise. http://oldtoolheaven.com/history/history1.htm

Hey pozidriv, not sure if anyone got back to you, welcome to the forum.

Prices can very quite a bit from one region to another, €30 ($40?) sounds alright for a nice York vise, that one looks in good shape.

That restore you have on the link, not sure where I got the link but saw this a few months back. Nice restore and good read. Good luck on your vise purchase...the first of many if you stay on this thread. :)
Thank you!

I bought the vise, will post some pictures tomorrow:rocker:

Anybody ever seen a "Grand" Master Vise?? This one belongs t o a 70 yr. old friend who got it from his grandfather. Not as striking in 2D, but looking at the back of it it's a unique design for sure. Anyone know of the Co. or history etc.??

TIA,
DM&FS

There have been several posted over the years. You could probably get quite a bit of info in you do a "forum search".

Take care!

A Reed 4C---some of our "Regular Posters" have Reed 4C's already, and some are still looking for one...

This AIN'T IT!!!:lol_hitti

This is to alert the "Already Got One's" to increase their insurance, to get a bigger chain, and to get a "Mean Junqueyard Dog"...

This one is on Ebay for an opening bid of $1,000.00 and a "Buy It Now" of $1,400.00!!!...My favorite part was the "Standard Shipping Charge" of $350.00!!!:eyecrazy:

Holy Sheep Dip!!!

Who'da thunk a Reed 4C ,in this condition, was worth nearly two large???

Our members' restored vises are worth north of three grand, if this seller hasn't lost his mind...

Chain 'em down, boys!!!:rocker:

Guy in Essex MD has this one for $50 - I tried to meet him but my schedule is so messed up I can't. Someone save it!

Odd Wilton type, not sure what model, very long and square body, no anvil area.

http://baltimore.craigslist.org/tls/4720597712.html

I have one of these, and they are about the beefiest homeowners type vise you can find. Not quite a machinist vise but still pretty well made. These are US made and pre-date the version with the anvil on the back.

Here are some other "Quickcet / Quikcet" products from Grand:
A "C" clamp, the rod is threaded on one side and slips through the nut, turn and it can be screwed in. A pipe clamp that uses a traditional threaded rod. And their often seem 3 inch exposed screw vise with coppered rods.

Also, there is a Quikset Grand Master vise on evilprey right now. Price is OK but the shipping is through the roof. evilprey item No. 351207314357

Bought the York 100 vise I previously linked to. No regrets whatsoever! Smooth action, no rust, heavy, beautiful. Will use it as is for the moment due to several other projects, but will take off the primer paint and restore it fully in the future. Does anyone know if it's possible to date these vises?

Their style did change over time, but I have no clue as to dates, or even how many style changes.

Those jaws are not the correct ones. You can however still order jaws from the company, http://york.cz/

Nice Reed 108 72CZ, Jason is a good guy to give that one up. You just made the 8" club.

I have been working on the little guys, I have several small Parkers that are missing the plates and hand clamps that mount them to a bench. The kind you swivel from underneath. I had a day to my self in the shop so I made these two swivel bases and I think they will finish up good. The two vises are a #0 Parker and the other one is a no. 20, both with 2-1/4 jaws. The new jaws are next.

72: nice Reed 108. I'm guessing Jason made you aware of an ad or did you actually buy it from him? in any case nice vise. i'm looking for a nice little lift which i think you have your 270 pound Reed on. any complaints or thoughts as maybe which one to buy so i can hope to move a few of my big vises when i get older?

Jason: Very nice of you to help 72 because i think that vise is on your short list of ones you want. nice looking Reed 105 and how does that look alongside the Craftsman 5 incher?

Performance and Poz: welcome to the Forum and the vise thread with your awesome York vices. good to have a few more new members from across the pond.

ALL: i picked up this Drill Press or Mill vise and couldn't find any name on it anywhere. it came out of a big shop that closed down years ago that had huge mills and lathes. it weighs about 25 pounds and wondering if an import or what brand it might be? any idea if it was meant for a mill which i don't own or a Drill press? i might have to clean it up and repaint it with the John Deere colors or buy another gallon or two of boiled linseed oil.

Drives, Yes Jason pointed out a CL ad,and I drove up to Denton TX to get it.
The lift is a Harbor Freight item.
I got it as a return item and so far it's come in very handy !!

We must have more pics of the Reed 108!!!

Did you get that other Reed while you were up there? I'm curious about that one too.

Yeah it is one I would like (wouldn't we all??), and he got it for a good price. But I'm patient, I have plenty to keep me busy.
