I'm looking at getting a bearing race and seal driver set to primarily work on my trailers and offroad toys. I have narrrowed it down to the Lisle 12980 master set or the OTC 4507 master set. I doubt either is made in USA anymore, but is one better than the other? I'm leaning towards the Lisle due to price and the fact they oem some of the tool truck kits. The Lisle also appears to have a longer driver handle.

FWIW, I looked at the HF offering and the price isn't much better than the name brands, but it seems like a bearing driver isnt exactly an ultra precision tool so it might be good enough.

I don't have any experience with the Lisle or OTC sets but I own the HF kit and its been great. I use it to drive crank bearings in to motorcycle cases and the seals. IMO if the price is better on the Lisle and they make some of the truck brand sets I would go with that if you aren't interested in the HF set.

Edit: The HF handle also holds up to heavy blows, it hasn't mushroomed yet

I have two different OTC bushing driver sets that I really like. OTC is oem for some of Matco's for what it's worth :dunno: Either OTC or Lisle is probably fine for what it is...

Lisle customer service responded promptly to my inquiry, they now make their set in China.

I stopped by HF and got their set for $26.39........Lisle got greedy going to China, so I saved a few bucks just like they did. It ***** as I would have paid their price if it was USA made.

The HF set works great. As you stated, this isn't exactly a high-precision application.

The HF set is also cheap enough that I've had no qualms about modifying a few of the driver discs for special purposes, which has been very handy.

I've beaten the living piss out of the HF one, and it has held up fine. Damn fine tool for the money. Aluminum too, so it won't eff up whatever you are hammering on.

That's a bad *** set, but way more than I need.

I forgot who makes mine but it hooks up to my air hammer love it!!!

James
I've seen a Lisle set that does that......but I unfortunately don't have an air hammer.

Surprisingly, the HF set looked really nice when I got it home and opened it up. The machining was great, and so was the anodizing. I also liked how flat the storage case is. My only gripe is it doesn't come with a race driver that is big enough for my Dana 60 (front) bearings. Luckily, I saved my old races, so I will grind those down to use them to drive in the new ones.

Lisle sells the bigger driver heads individually if u need them. I bought the bigger ones for diving those bigger pinion bearings.

You can rent one for free at Auto Zone

Are you talking about the larger driver head for the Dana 60, or the whole driver set?

If it's the whole set you are talking about, for $26 I would rather not have to drive to Auto Zone every time I need a tool. If I don't get my money out of the set by the time I kick the bucket, my kids will.
