Asphalt crack repair??

Hey guys, the guy who did my asphalt kind of made a mess of it and it is cracking everywhere. It did this right after he did it. He actually told me that these "punctures" coming UP from under it were caused by dandolines


Anyway, its gotten worse over the years and now with spring aproaching I've noticed the cracks are look like they are all the way through in places. Is there any "magic" sealer to fill the cracks and "weld" it back together?

Sounds like you base is non existent you should at a minimum have 4-6" base of crushed stone with a binder ( here we call it lynpac) and it needs to be highly compacted. A good job will be of two different pours of asphalt on top of the base goes the binder coat 2-3" then the finish coat 2'3". Any adjoining mating surfaces should be prepped with tacking compound ( tac). Now for you cracks for repair you can use tac caulk and some small crushed stone to infill as needed.

how wide are the cracks? 1/4. 1/2 inche???depending on depth and width of them, there are several things you can do to help seal what you have... are the cracks spaced out a good distance or are they spiderweb looking.... If they are more toward the spider web appearance your best option may be to replace that spot or whole thing if needed... can you take some pictures to show how much area and how badly damaged it is

I've got both kinds of cracks, spiderwebs and some that are just straight across. I'll try to get some pics up for you to advise. I know its not goin to be perfect, but I was hoping to at least help it some. The guy came back and put a few patchest over the initial stuff and it looks like a "quilt"

Its kind of a mess.

Yep, like -B- says, sounds like the prep work was non-existent. If you have cracks going the whole way through, the only real recourse is to clear it all out of there and start fresh.

I know everyone likesto say: "tear it up and redo it..." But not everyone wants to repave (and re-pay for) a job just done - and maybe it's not even your front drive (or you just don't care that much about it!).
IF that's the case, you can purchase crack filler and a sealer to make it look much better. The crack filler will fill all those smaller cracks, if they are larger use a patch compound, then seal the entire thing. You can buy all this at Home Depot, etc. It'll be a weekend of work and about $100.00....or you can get it redone the right way.

Don't get me wrong, I'm all for doing it the right way....but not everyone needs to be and not every job requires it.

I agree that sometimes a patch will take care of things. But if you have cracks going the whole way through asphalt it is only going to get worse. It sounds like a bit more than crack filler is going to take care of. Basically you have gravel at that point.

Thanks etek! I know it needs to be redone, but funds and time just aint goin to allow it. I really just want to make it look better and get by with it. Some of the cracks are a 1/2" wide and all the way across a section and some of them are only around 1/4" and not all the way through the asphalt. I know it was done poorly and so on, but for now I'll try to get the patch compound and reseal it. Is there any better or "thicker" compounds?
