Hi all,

Ordered a new mattress this weekend and trying to shop for a bed frame was futile. Anything under a grand was rickety and junk press board, and everything nice was over $3000... I have a lot of trouble dropping that kind of dough on a bed frame after spending as much as we did on the mattress.

After a bit of convincing, I got the wife to allow me to build one out of steel and wood for a nice modern industrial look! :rocker:

This thread will be my build thread as I try and get this finished within the next 7 days... Sorry for the messy Garage BTW!

Here is my workhorse Miller 212:

I ordered 3 24foot 2x2 x 14ga tubes, 1 24ft 1x1x16ga, and one 20ft 1x1x14ga angle iron. Here is some of it after cutting up pieces for tonight

First I built a standard head board frame 22" x 78"

I wanted to have a slight lean back on the head board so I built this piece to incorporate an 8degree lean back.

And here is where I sit so far after about 2 hours tonight. The top portion of the headboard frame is complete. I will have a padded inlay inside this headboard frame when finished.

And of course... and obligatory weld close-up :)

for a couple days I really liked this design. Now... I still like it. I don't think I'd make it/buy it if I saw it in a store.

Gonna be watching. Liking the looks. Hope your wife likes it. That will score a lot of points.

My bed is metal tubing sold by broyhill for nearly 2k. It was made to look old. There isn't any welding on it that a trade school student couldn't do. The rounding of the metal is another issue.

I did this about 15 yeas ago, I used scaffolding for the uprights, it was a nice solid job had to chop it up mind you when I moved as it was too big to get out the room.

oh and I did the welding in the bedroom as I had a flat and no garage at the time.

Why did you not 45* the corners? Just seems to me that small detail would bother me.

I am subscribed.

KO

They will be enclosed, I was thinking the same thing when building that, however because the lower bar would be open the same without another bar to connect it, I wanted to cap them all identically so it would be uniform.

I know it's more work, but because the wife is going to critique the hell out of this, I need to make sure everything looks the same and is symmetrical.

I'm in!
Anytime I can talk the wife into letting me weld something that is allowed in the house is a big win for me. Currently working on a raised dog dish.

Looks good. Just a suggestion, build it in pieces that bolt/fit together to make it easier to move/get in the house. Most standard bed frames are head board, foot board and two sides.
