Did you get the intake adapters from Jay Brown? What intake are you using?

I started off with a 390 FE truck block (external ribs - early 1970's I think) for my Fairlane convt. Sonic check came back good, so I was able to safely bore to 4.13 (had to offset bore #1 a little bit b/c of core shift). Added a 428 crank that I had sitting in the garage, some H-beam rods, forged flat tops, a mild solid roller from Barry Rabotnik, topped off with Edelbrock heads (no porting), a ported Streetmaster, and a 750 dp. Should be close approaching 500 hp.

Any progress on the Eco boosted? There are a lot of photo's way back in the tread that are no longer hosted. This truck is nice too though!

My plans are always bigger than my ability to get things done! LOL

I was really on a roll with the EcoBoost truck before the illness set in.

I surely have not lost interest in it and its killing me that the project has been idle for over 2yrs now. Its just taking up a major spot in my storage garage.

I am pretty much a one man band so progress is very very slow on about anything I do with so much going on. Still going for treatments 2x per week and its been 2 1/2yrs now.

I decided to at least get this 427 powered '66 running before I get back on the EcoBoost truck. I set a goal to have it finished by Scottsdale GoodGuys which is coming up soon and I have not finished the headers yet . .

Age & the ability to do much is nearly gone right now.

I have seriously thought of selling the ecoboost truck and try to focus on the 427 project which is going on 15yrs now of ownership.

I completed the 427 engine back in 2009 and the paint in 2010. The way things are unless things come back to me I will surely not be doing any more paint work.

Another issue is $$. I really should not have purchased the low mile 1966 F600 truck. Waited over 20yrs to find one then when it came up bought it scraping the bottom of barrel, selling off stuff to buy it.

Sorry for the long winded post on a simple question.

I want to at least get the 427 truck running before I start back on EcoBoost project, my ability is just waning . . Hoping the health will return enough to finish both projects.

Because I will obviously miss the goal for GoodGuys and SEMA once I get the 427 Truck running I will get to mounting cab on EcoBoost. And maybe get it running so the pieces are in one pile. From there who knows! Thanks for your continued interest.

Yes, The adapter is from Jay B. I ordered it back a year ago when he first offered. Bad timing for the $ department but since i made commitment still took it when it was custom made. I am number 80 of the limited run of 100.

Plan was to build the 416 engine with the twin turbo's with a custom intake on Jay's adapter. By the looks of it that will happen sometime in year 2021

Starting this week I plan on going on a HUGE selling spree with not needed parts, tools and STUFF!

You are going to confuse some tech inspectors with those valve covers.

Just tell them its a Mercury Marine Engine . .

I thought all the photo's were restored. I will look into that . .

On the way to SEMA so will do that when I return.

Thanks for taking time to reply. Would love to see any progress on the ecoboost if and when you get back at it. Best of luck with your health. I'm just getting over a bout of pneumonia myself. Just a couple weeks down though.

TimeWarpF100,

I wish I had read that you were going to SEMA before I went. Would have been great to talk with you about your Ecoboost project.

I hope you checked out those 2015 2.7L Ecoboost F150s, that is a tiny little engine that makes 325HP/375ft-lbs, and would be a great swap into a 1996-2011 Ranger.

Ford Racing advised that they will have a Controls Pak for the 3.5L Ecoboost available 2nd quarter 2015 (Manual trans only). PCS claims they will have a stand-alone 6R80 controller available in 6 months. So both should hit market about the same time.

If you need some help wiring-up your Ecoboost project, I might be able to help as I just stripped out the factory harnesses and made some modifications to make another Ecoboost Project run correctly. Pretty tricky systems with the CAN bus (High speed and low speed) and the new 80-bit PATS.

Hi Walt! Good to see you here!

I spent 2 days walking around at SEMA. Getting too old and not used to that a bit sore yet.

I spent many hours in the Ford booth . . . LOL

The 2.7L has been interesting enough that a couple weeks ago ordered one.

Of course the smallest & lightest version I could get. Gotta try for the 30 mpg. Short bed regular cab with a 3:31 gear, the tallest avail.

I have no clue how I am going to pay for it when it shows up. I have a bunch of stuff going up for sale starting today. Dealer said if I cannot raise the $$ they will just put it in stock. I probably have 2 months to sell off enough stuff to purchase.

I have not touched the ecoboost project for over 2 years now but wish I could be. Moving into a new place, a bit of health issues and too many other projects. Too much going on trying to do all this on my own.

As soon as I get the 427 truck (above) running and box in place I will drag the eco project out of the cobwebs.

Looks like the 2.7L eco is under 400lbs in weight. Still quite heavy as that is not too far off to what my 482" FE weighs.

Ford Racing has been telling me since 2011 there would be a pac to run the eco. I did speak with them on thursday at sema. Seems a few people who were working on it moved on etc. They did have a 3.5 eco project on display so am sure you saw it.

DSC03855.jpg

The size of some of the parts on the 2.7 are incredibly small. Did you see size of the valve springs? Diameter of the average finger . .

Since this thread is about EcoBoost here are a few pics of the new 2.7 I took while there.

TimeWarpF100,

The SEMA show will wear your feet out for sure! Your eyes too, so much to see and inspect.

I see those LS motors stuffed into all kinds of cars and trucks. GM makes it easy to do with their complete powertrain kits, and they support their auto transmissions with electronics too. I wish Ford would do the same. I help everyone I can get a Ford engine into a Ford car/truck as I can make them run with the factory electronics. (32 years at Ford, mostly in Powertrain Electronics and fuel injection)

Yes, I also heard that Ford Racing lost some key staff members to other positions within Ford, causing delays to some projects within Ford Racing. Hands-on technical staff is in short supply all over Detroit.

Get that FE truck done soon and move on back onto that Ecoboost truck. I really think you got a neat project there. I will be happy to help you solve any wiring/electrical issues you find. Just save all the factory wiring, all the bits you need are there we just need to rearrange a few things and delete a bunch of stuff.

Where are you located? I am in Southern Nevada, near Las Vegas. It would be best if I could be modifying your Ecoboost harnesses while you are finishing up that FE truck. It takes me a week to do a set of harnesses but there is a lot of planning first. I'd really like to come out and see the truck, talk about what 2011 features you want to keep and explain to you how the system works and what your options you have. (You can keep every feature the 2011 Truck has, and there are some that are really useful, or you can delete what you don't want.)

I you are interested, drop me an email at [email protected] so we can talk.

Walt

P.S. I will be going to SE Pennsylvania for 3 weeks, leaving in about a week. While I am there, I hope to get some time to see if I can help a guy get his (F150) 3.5L Ecoboost/6R80 running in his 1967 Fairlane.

I am on the way north side of Phoenix near I17 & Carefree Highway.

It took us 4 hours to make the trip to Vegas, middle of the night & not much traffic . . LOL

And yes I really really want to get back on the ecoboost project.

Not sure where time goes but so much to do and so little time to get it all done.

This 427 project is going much much slower than I had hoped. Help is hard to come by. A lot of this I can no longer do on my own.

Today I plan on building rest of exhaust system on 427 Project
Once that is done I can get the headers coated and maybe exhaust.

From there I can get the hood painted, get the engine fired and hope no issues.

Then it will be time for front clip.

At this point I will mount the cab to ecoboost chassis

EcoBoost Project:

Since I have all the power stuff for windows I may try to adapt that to the '66 cab if possible.

I do plan on using the ecoboost f150 seats so will have at least the drivers seat power.

To make this project go faster I will most likely use the 2011 dash assy with the HVAC etc. Much easier plug and play.

But again if I had a custom harness I could use stock dash

I will use all other electronics

ABS
Roll Control
Trailer Sway & stability control
Adjustable Pedals
Heating and cooling to back of cab
Sirius radio

Plan is to basically have 1966 sheet metal with most other options in use.

Not quite sure on airbags etc

Walt,

Do you have the ability to disable PATS on the ecoboost drivetrains? How about 5.0 automatic?

I work with these control systems in the aftermarket, but I have not found a way to defeat pats without using the ford racing control pack, which only works with the manual as you know. Defeating VATS on GM is one scalar, which is easily done, or a OS patch which is a little more difficult.

Thanks,

Ryan

Walt,

Good to talk to you! Thanks for the call & insight.

I will make it a goal to drag the EcoBoost project out of cobwebs by the time you get back in 3 weeks!

Its about time I get back on it . . .

I really want to get the 427 project running first. Should be do-able in 3wks from now.

Now, I may be biased (towards FEs), but your FE project has to be one of the best, most incredible engine build projects I've ever seen! Where'd you get that valley pan?

Btw - did u get my pm about the turbo kit? Thx.

Thanks!

I had not signed in for a few days. Thought I responded . .

The Intake adapter is custom built with a scheduled build run of only 100 pieces of 3 or 4 variations.

My adapter is number 80 of 100. I waited a year for it to be made.
Incredible quality for sure.

The neat thing about the adapter is once bolted on you can change intake manifolds in a few minutes time. No need to remove distributor etc

The version I have uses a 351 Cleveland intake manifold or you could build a custom intake for twin turbo's which actually was my plan. A few have or are in process of adding EFI intake. Easy to switch back from single 4v dual 4v, tunnel ram, efi etc without actually removing adapter.

I will see if I can locate a email for you. Thought I sent one about the turbo's.

I just took the turbo stuff out of storage and uploading photo's now.
Check your email & PM

I took a bunch of pics. I have very slow internet (hi-speed not avail here) so difficult to attach to email. I did send links in 3 different ways to email and also tried to attach pics to a PM. Let me know what works and what does not.

A bit of progress update:

Finally was able to make some progress on the '66 F100 427 Progress

A bit of welding and cleanup of box & now getting close to primer. Found one small ding in right rear that needs a bit of metal finishing work. The factory primer on inside of box panels is still actually super nice. (ok except where it was blasted prior)

Laid out plastic because used fresh glass beads in my portable blaster and wanted to catch some of it as kinda pricey. Of course as soon as I had plastic laid out perzactly where I was going to blast a hose blew on the hoist!

Then managed to get it in side shop where the winch is so I could drop it in place on truck to check fit. Of course all did not go well there.

And what most folks here are waiting for a bit of update on the EcoBoost project.

Just chomping at the bit to work on it again and really need a daily driver so with the little fitting issue on the 427 truck decided to take a break from it and at least get the cab mounted on eco project.

Order up was to get the EcoBoost powered workbench into the main shop. What a mess it was! No clue where all the junk came from . .

I now have enough stuff packed in main shop I can hardly move!

Hoping this week during break I can get the cab mounted.
I had it 99.2% fitted prior but now it has been so long I have to start over.

I did take out of storage the wiring, dash assy, the core support module etc

Now its time to look and see if I can find my thinking cap and get going on it again.

FINALLY! ?????????

Finally some other good news too. More on that soon . .

Man, that's some nice sheet metal. That's enough to make any car nut move to AZ.. :lol_hitti

Ain't that the truth. I don't think I could do the 100+ degrees on a regular basis though.

Great thread and I am really looking forward to the Ecoboost project resuming again.

Thanks All!

Its good to be tinkering again.

Here is a reminder to how "rough" this AZ sheet metal really is.

I had to fill a hole for the radio and ANOTHER for the A/C drain that was in firewall area. LOL

Tried my best to find a flaw in original fenders . . Did find a "ding" in hood . .

Kind of a bummer when I could not even find surface rust on back side of fenders.
Bottom side of hood I could just polish it was that nice

Happy Thanksgiving to all!

Late yesterday afternoon I was finally able to start the cab mounting process.

I had it fitted very close before but never tacked in the mounts etc

First up was to drill out the numerous spot welds on kick panel area so I could install the 2012-14 sheet metal for easier mounting of the electronics and also to match up to the 2011 Firewall.

Its going to be one HUGE undertaking to try to get the dash in (may end up making a custom dash) then the HVAC, wipers and the hood hinges, adjustable pedal assy and more.

The dash mounting tube is a bit wider than I want but trying to integrate it all into the '66 cab.

Plan is to have the cab mounted by late saturday evening! Now that will be a HUGE step and probably the most difficult step in the entire truck.

How do you sneak that fire truck back in there?

16' door so just aim the rear bumper for edge of wall and when bumper hits power cord for air compressor behind it stop. Its then in perfect spot!

As long as mirror is about touching wall at same time . .

yesterday was able to remove the kick panel area sheet metal on '66 cab preparing for the new f150 versions.

Going to a bit tricky trying to figure out exact location and then getting all to fit at same time. Yet still allowing a decent seating arrangement.

Found rust spot on pass side about size of quarter

seeing as though the '66 427 project header build was such a task I decided to sell a few things so I could get this.

It has been picked up from distributor and may get it assembled tomorrow.

With caster kit of course so I can push it in and out of different shop spaces and even use it outside. When not in use for work stuff it will be so I can keep a 2nd car below or above.

I was really really struggling trying to crawl under and out from the truck building headers.
I made another feeble attempt to build the exhaust but it was just too much. At least now I can sit on my favorite chair while I work! LOL

This is the 9000lb version. Thought about the much smaller one but decided on the larger size. Gotta be able to hold this tank of a ecoboost project when done!

I can use Ed's trick and turn it into a paint booth .
