Hi all. I am looking for a paint gun. Use will be small garage projects both metal and wood. I need a gun I can spray paint with but then seal a nice table top as well. I am not looking to spend a fortune but I do need one that works.

While on the subject, looking for a decent airbrush as well.

Any suggestions from the all knowing population of the garage journal?

Thanks

Astro Pneumatic's EURO series is impossible to beat for the money. Available in both HVLP (green) and Reduced Pressure (Blue). Needle size will be determined by the viscosity of the material you intend to spray.

If thing you want to spray is water based you will have to get a gun designed for that. Devilibis has a starter line brand that is excellent for the weekend use or everyday. Don't buy cheap by buying quality it will last a life time.

Devilibis makes great spray equipment and only after a person learns how to spray well will it make a difference. If you are spraying water based products stainless steel spray gun parts are recommended but not entirely necessary. Maintain the equipment and it will last. The HF will do what you need for 10 times less than the Finish line series.

Get that HF gun. If you spray water based paints be sure to clean it out right away, with some methyl hydrate as the final rinse.

I have that gun, and it is suitable for most workshop projects.

Go with the HF Gun..reason being its cheap an actually not half bad.

When it comes to Painting equipment, specifically guns, I find & feel that its almost an art-form. An experienced painter can do an excellent job with a not so good gun, and buying a top of the line DeVilibis wont make a noob spray any better.

So my thought is...if you gotta ask what kind of gun you should buy, chances are the HF is all you need. I have the HF...for my use it has been an excellent gun.

This ^^^^

I have used very expensive paint guns and when you are looking a specific $$materials they are needed to get the desired results, but most good painters can do a better job with this $10 gun than a wannabe with a $400 gun.
Same is true with wrenches and other tools.

Practice, practice, practice...

BTW I have this HF gravity feed gun, and it is better than most *** brand siphon feed guns.

Paint gut for a car?? The same one will do a pretty good job. I would have no problem doing a complete with this gun.

I'm picking up a fox mustang..want to paint it black/white or a off the wall color and throw a LS motor in it. Going to call it the ******* child

I would rather pick up a vette and throw in a 5.0 and :lol_hitti

lol Ford finally got their s*** together with the new coyotte motors after being handed their butts by chevy for soooo many years. I'm a Ford guy and I work off a budget and 5.3 truck motors are hard to beat with their tuning ability. 351 is only other easy motor I would use other than a 5.4 from a navigator but both of those bring a premium vs 5.3 truck motors.. A shame the new mustangs have IRS.

Thank you all very much for the replies. I do have some painting experience from the Marines, painted jets back then. Big difference to cars for sure. I'll attach a pic of the last "big" thing I painted, just happens to be in the Smithsonian !!

As for the gun, looks like I'll be adding the HF gun to the wish list. I will also be looking into Devilibis as well for my wood working finishes.

Car magazines are raving about the handling.

The HF gun gets great reviews, considering it only costs like 10 bucks with a coupon.

My wife bought one (without a coupon - oh, the humanity!) and used it to spray a large armoire (is that how you spell that? It's a very big clothes chest). She had never sprayed paint before, and I am a rookie myself. I showed her what I knew, we watched some youtube videos, and I insisted that she practice more than she initially wanted to. And the end result was very good, I think most people would not believe that sort of quality was possible from a non-mechanically inclined woman, using a $15 gun, who had never used a spray gun before. I was fairly impressed.

You can buy the finish line guns with multiple tip sizes to cover all products and for the $50 they run I wouldn't waste my time on a cheap considering the time it takes to prep it correctly and paint it.

Of all of my machines, this purple HF gun is literally the only Asian import machine I own. I bought it based on >100 glowing reviews from bowyers and luthiers who use it to lay 2-part self-leveling epoxy clear coat. People also like the Devilbliss kit. Obviously, if you want to step up to Iwata prices then you can get much nicer kit... but do decide what paint you want to spray before you buy a gun, since a nice gun may be no better than a 'disposable' purple HF gun.

Again, that hf gun works. Clean it well, they tend to pack grease inside it sometimes, and they will spray good. I've owned probly 6 of them, a couple got trashed after insufficient cleaning of single stage enamel. I've sprayed cars, tractors etc with them, a couple dozen derby cars with unimaginable paints and finishes. Great for projects.

If you want something good, for automotive finishes, I love the sharp finex guns, I have three. I got them after selling my sata guns to pay rent. For 1/4 the price they are 3/4 the quality at least. I do like the devilbiss tekna line for waterborne paints.

I am an ASE master certified paint and body guy, with several ppg factory certs, I've sprayed.

Can you get larger tip sizes for the HF gun? I would like to get one for primer.
