I have had my house for about 5 years now. I put in a tile floor when I moved in and then got busy doing other things. Finally painted and cleaned out the 2 car space. It’s about 22x22 and I have an electrician installing 4 rows of 4 recessed cans with LED bulbs.
To meet code we had to go with fire rated recessed cans that cost a ton of money compared to regular cans. The electrician is installing 16 fixtures and two new outlets and wiring to the fuse box in the basement. The total cost he is charging including LED bulbs is $3000.
It seemed like too much money until I looked online and found the fire rated cans cost about $200 each.
Any other alternatives?

Tons of alternatives. Do you have pics or link of what you intend to use? Why did you choose them?

Why do you need recessed?

I wonder if you could box in, and fireproof spaces for normal recessed can?

I actually didn’t choose the fixtures. I left it up to the electrician to get the correct cans to be used for a garage. He wouldn’t put in normal cans due to liability reasons. I really didn’t want to go with fluorescent because I don’t think it’s a true light when detailing a car.

Recessed lights have a more finished look compared to hanging normal 8ft florescent units. I had thought about making four soffits to hold cheaper cans but thought it might look odd.

I didn't mean a soffit, but framed in cavities recessed up into the existing ceiling . Drywall these cavities so you could maintain the ceiling's fire rating. Install normal cans in the cavities, and finish with another piece of drywall to match The existing ceiling level.

And I agree that it will look a lot better.
