How often do you come across 17/32" nuts/bolts ?

This is something I sometimes come across with old garden type equipment. TBH I'm not sure if it's actually 17/32" or some other oddball size, but it's about 13.4 mm and I've got nothing (neither spanner nor socket) that fits it.

Last instance was today when my wife asked me to pull the tray off an old wheel barrow so she could use it to plant stuff in. It was held on with old coach type bolts that used approx 13.4 mm nuts. In this case I just cut them off as it's never going back together anyway, but it just has me wondering what the true size these are supposed to be.

In the past I've often come across this size with old lag screws as well. Things are mostly metric here so I only have a limited selection of inch stuff. I've got 1/2" and the next after that is 9/16", so these are a definite no go with this size fastener. A 14mm six point socket does turn it, but obviously it's as sloppy as anything.

So what's the go with these 13.4mm nuts and bolts? Are they really 17/32" or are they some old Whitworth or BSF type?

I have seen 17/32" and a couple of other sizes from above on older USA made stuff 1970's and older, and it was more garden/yard/industrial stuff much more so than automotive, but they do pop up from time to time on anything old. 19/32 is essentially a perfect fit for 15mm, so no need to own a 19/32 wrench or socket.

I've got a 1/4 drive 17/32 socket... some cheap-*** chinese one with bad chrome and really rough finish. Can't bring myself to throw it away... it sits next to my 13/32 and 15/32, none of the 3 have ever been used by me.

Guaran-damn-teed, though, the minute I get rid of them, I'll run into something that uses all 3 sizes... that's just the way those things go! ;)

Sure seems like 1/4" Whitworth or 5/16" BSF. There was also a heavy series of US nuts, almost entirely pre WW2, which were also about that size.

Yeah, looking at this page here http://www.landroverclub.net/Club/HTML/Whitworth_BSF_BA.htm I think they must be old 5/16" BSF / 1/4" whitworth.

It's not something I come across very often, but it is a really annoying size. No chance at all of getting a 1/2" or even a 13 mm onto it, but 9/16" and 14mm are a *really* loose fit. I might have to see if I can find an odd 17/32" socket somewhere, just for the occasional time I strike on of these annoying things.
