Finally found something useful at a sale today.

I scored a very used Kero-Sun Omni 200 Kerosene Heater for $15.

It had some surface rust hear and there, needed a wick and ignitor, and was full of dust and bugs.

I stopped at the hardware store on the way home and picked up a wick which was funny because it cost a dollar more than the heater itself.

I got home, cleaned her out, sanded the rust off and gave her a shot of rust oleum.

Tomorrow I'll put her back together and try to fire her up. I'll get some photos when I'm done.

15 bucks!!!

The magnetic bases are also new but have surface rust on them. I should have them cleaned up with a bit of steel wool by tomorrow

BC: nice haul so far and do you still get to dig some more? i do like shopping where there are big tools, newly opened USPS flat rate boxes opened on top of the pile and 2 inch end wrenches hanging on the wall behind the little scroll saw. are any of the big machines working since it sounds like he had a few machines for parts?

CB: i do like all those dentist type picks because they do come in handy.

Dave: that basket the lead is sitting it goes for $20 or in that range and those are the biggest fishing weights i've seen. must have been for catching Halibut in Alaska?

Outlaw: good to see you are back on 4 wheels and Oldie will love the color choice.

That's a nice looking ride you've got there Outlaw. :3gears:

I only had time for a quick stop at one of my regulars this morning and grabbed this small pile:

Almost complete SK 1/4" drive SAE set, Proto plastic tip hammer, plastic sheathed cable, Snap-on 1/4" universal and 1/4"-3/8" adapter, complete CMan =V= SAE 3/8"-1" DBE set, SK 1/4" driver, Plumb 8 pt. 1/2 socket, Starrett feeler gauges, Plvmb 1/4" drive tools, Helicoil repair kit, pick made from a Snap-on pozi-drive screwdriver, Petersen and CMan locking pliers, and two CMan 1/2" torque wrenches.

Also just got back from picking up a 9 drawer KRA series top box mounted atop a modified 2 drawer cart but it's still in the back of the truck, it's dark and I have a gift bottle to open.

The big wrenches are imported but I noticed them right away. Most of the machines are working but have been sold already. I can see what he has for parts but it will be a few days before I can get back there. The entire yard, which is a half acre has more sheds and coverings full of other tools. I noticed some big bench bpgrinders, craftsman wood lathe and some other yet to be identified tools.

The guy is a neighbor so I'll be going back until there is nothing left to buy:beer:
The more I uncover, there more there is to purchase:drool:

Dave, you **** on the lead and the south bend lathe books! I try to find bulk lead but they want a buck a pound!

I believe the current spot price of lead is about $0.90/lb. Scrap yards here (New Jersey) pay around $0.55/lb. Around 2007-2008 the spot price was between $1.40 and $1.60/lb.

Partway into the mine:lol

Looks like a bunch of good stuff in there, on the left is a cylindrical grinder then possibly a Hone machine to the right of the grinder. Can't imagine all the treasures in that room. Good luck BC, looking forward to seeing what you come up with. I have Opti Visor's in every corner of my shop, just the right tool for failing eyes. Nice Drill Press purchase, gotta share a closer shot of your drill press. Looks pretty big.

Ted Locally the yards pay .50/lb and sell for .85/lb at least they did sell for that a few months ago. I haven't been able to find it in bulk anywhere locally as of recent, although i did buy a 1/2 full 5 gallon bucket with wheel weights and battery terminals as part of a box lot. Actually forgot about that. Whoops

Great stuff guys!
Nine, if you didn't cut the padlock on the Craftsman box I might be interested in it. Let me know, it looks like a Yale.

It has the key Jeff, I'll put your name on it, bottom box came with original owners manual and both keys as well!

Outlaw, good score on the new ride, those things are fun!

BC, that looks like a GJ pickers dream! Some of those old broken machines have really hard to find part$$ so be sure to look them over well before they scrap them.

Lots of good finds this weekend, and a new poster to the forum/thread! Great job guys, keep it up!

Wow, you hit a Starrett gold mine!! That's a major "you ****".

Thanks Dave, I'm not lucky enough to live in a industrial belt city so when machinist things do pop up(which is rare), I try to jump on it. The listing was for $200 but due to the misspelling of "machinist" in the title, I figured the seller may not know what he had so I offered $100. He quickly countered with $125 and the rest is history  While we were loading, he said he had 15 calls after mine but wanted to give me first shot, I offered him a discount on some future upholstery work and thanked him for holding it. Not too often does a CL purchase go great but this was one of them.

BTW, my offer was sight unseen, I did not try talking him down after seeing it. Just verified that it was worth his counteroffer when I arrived and we loaded it up. When I got home, I started finding more and more Starrett and NOS that was buried. We were both satisfied.

Nine4, I would love to have those machines carted off to my house but I don't have the time or money to get my hands on them. Just this morning they hauled away a nice looking blast cabinet that I would of loved to have. How much work would it need to make it run again? It's just a big box with sand, gloves and a motor/hopper. there was no need to scrap it but they did

Here is one of the mills that was sold just this past week. It's beautiful:drool: and somebody damn near stole it for the sale price.

I'll return with a friend next weekend and we can really dig in deep. I'm hoping to buy up some of the lathe chuck I saw lay around. They ranged from 6" up to 14", 2 jaw to 8 jaw.

Lastly, I went out and got this off of CL: my 10 YO commuter bit the big one last week (engine block or head cracked...) so I needed something quickly.

Removable Hardtop, folding windshield, (Samurai's don't come with the folder hinges and latches stock....) The PO changed all the markings to the Indian Maruti "Gypsy" version, including the grill, and painted it "Arrest me Red!" (Actually Ferrari red!) :shocking:

Nice score on the ZUK:beer:. They can be turned into pretty badass wheelers especially if you Frankenstein it with a Toyota minitruck. Back in my wheelin' days a guy who normally ran with us had a seriously modded Samurai running Toy axles (ARB locked) front and rear with dual cases and 35" boggers. It was impressive on the trails to say the least:drool:.

The aftermarket hardtop is a nice add-on. Soft tops are cool, but can be as expendable as tires in a cold environment.

"Scrap guys" :wtf: are the heirs effing IDIOTS?

And Crice ***** for a $5 Kennedy. you didn't mention the SK? :dunno: and what is the sway bar off of?

Nine GREAT score on the SK metric set!
lol. I forgot about the SK. The photo I took after I got home with my angle drill and wanted to use it, so I installed the rear sway bar in my S15. All the stuff in the photo is the assembled tools for that job (reported on S10 Forum). The SK mixed set (all but one 3/8" metric set but a 1/2" ratchet), the Kennedy box, a set of Taiwan strut spring compressors, a handful of odd SK, proto, and craftsman box end wrenches, and about 20 small triangle files, I got last month at a mind blowing estate sale ($20 total). The guy had a large garage/warehouse and apparently had not thrown anything away in 40 years. When I got there most of the big stuff was gone, but there were still scenes like the pile of circular saws, maybe 15, next to the pile of air tools--50 assorted?--and the pile of screwdrivers, maybe a couple hundred of them. I passed on the suitcase of hammer heads--all new--and on all 3 remaining new-in-box body hammer and dollies sets, and on the 15 crates of ceiling fan parts and the same number of crates holding old Plymouth restoration parts, and ..... The dealer was desperate to get rid of stuff. I hate to think what I might have done had I gotten there earlier.

Westland Estate sale on Wednesday I picked up a Blue Point Flaring/Swaging tool set, Craftsman compression gauge and a Craftsman 3/8dr flex head ratchet not in the pic because it's soaking in the ATF can.

Thursday I was off to the far-east (side) for a retiring mechanics garage sale for a bunch of Matco; large sized 4pc metric impact set, 3/8dr met impact swivels, SAE chrome swivel set, met hex set, screwdriver set and a cool GM locksmith set. Also got the panel clamps/tool, Mac screwdriver, the small pick and the Snap-on extension.

Friday it was back to the far-east for a couple of estate sales; body hammer (Majestic I think), the metal trimmer and the really cool Estwing old-school hatchet.

Saturday was a local family run estate sale advertised with "tons of tools". I got there early but unfortunately for me they opened a bit earlier than I got there. Still manged to score a Fluke multimeter, B&S wire gauge, the 11/16 gearwrench, Craftsman 2-jaw puller and one of those black Craftsman stools with rollers.

A good haul for the week but sure do miss those garage sales....

Bigcaddy,
I know you have 20,000 lbs to look through, if you could keep half and eye out for any spare parts, like the gear/ pully picture below, I'd like to buy one for my 11" Rockwell. I'm just taking a pot shot on this. It's the helical gear with the two belt pully slots.
Thanks

Not pure, and actual content depends on where you live. In Kalifornia, they are 0% lead these days... (They seem to think it's radioactive... :headscrat )

Most other places, very high content, if not 100%, depending on type.

Suckage on the Proto soft tipped hammer! I have a couple of the ball peened hammers from that set and I love them! I have been trying to find others that are reasonably priced and I am very jealous! Also nice score on the plvmb bits and the sk socket set!

Stick on wheel weights are likely 100% lead. Clip on wheel weights are typically 97.5% lead, .5% tin and 2% antimony. They are an alloy which is about twice a hard a pure lead.

Lots of clip on weights these days are now 100% zinc. They are garbage and mixing a zinc weight in with your lead can ruin that entire pot of lead as the zinc will basically turn your molten lead into junk that looks like grey cottage cheese.

Ted: Yep, exactly what these guys said. Depends on where you are, type and age of the weights. Also some of the newer weights are steel. If i'm not mistaken the bullet casting guys like the wheel weights with the tim and antimony in them. I could be wrong on that though

PO didn't take it to the dentist and some of the teeth fell off! I have the gear to the left, it the one on the right. It runs with the gears like they are. If I can't find one, I'll weld the chunked out area and grind new teeth in.

Are wheel weights pure/(close to pure) lead? Don't know, just asking.

It depends on the manufacturer and how badly you want a tire balanced:) I started working here in the North West for a large tire company called Les Schwab in 2004. Back then all the wheel weights where made of lead or mostly lead and where supplied by Bada. Here in the N.W. we have tons of hippies and liberals and they all started to complain about the high lead content of wheel weights and so the company switched to steel wheel weights in approximately 2008 as the company saw the writing on the wall that most large tire companies needed to switch to steel weight in order to be perceived as environmentally conscious and on the cutting edge of consumer perception. I always hated the steel weights because the steel clips on the weights reacts differently to a wheel when you hit it with a hammer to pound on the weight to a steel or aluminum wheel. The lead conforms to the wheels lip much easier and is much more forgiving than steel weights. The environmentally wheel wheel weight technology has come along was since then but I still swear by lead even if it is no bueno for the environment. I changed careers and started working for automotive dealerships as a service writer not a tech in 2011. The 2 dealers I have worked for both used lead wheel weights and steel stick on weights. Again what a company uses in terms of lead vs. steel is largely based on their suppliers and if the general public knows/cares that they used lead weights.

Been a while since I was able to go to the flea market here. Getting colder, but still a lot of people trying to make some extra bucks for Christmas spending.

Pics 1-2: $2 for everything
Pair of older Craftsman socket boxes for 1/4-drive sets. One only had a couple air tool accessories, the other had a handful of 1/4-drive sockets, all Craftsman, but none were original to the box.

Pic 3: $1
"Fix Your Volkswagen" book, from the 1940s up through 1981. Covers pretty much everything VW made up till then. Reference material is always worth the $1 investment....

Pic 4: $8 for everything
Large Williams "S" wrench, smaller Ford wrench, AC1818 Snap On obstruction wrench, Stanley nail set with rubber covering, Bonney 1256 waterpump wrench, and Berg Electronics pair of crimpers

Pic 5: $21 for everything, mostly for the large sockets ($14 for all three)
pair of Proto clutch head drivers, Armstrong 3/4-drive impact socket, Apex 1"-drive impact socket, Proto 1"-drive deep impact socket, lot of 7 smaller sockets (1 Proto, 6 Snap-On)

Pic 6: $3 for everything
Carew long 16" tongs with replaceable teeth, older long C Craftsman carpentry hammer

i went to a huge indoor flea market. mostly expencive stuff.
on the 1st isle was a super nice early 50s gerstner listed for $475. i checked it out, but didnt want to pay that much and didnt really plan on spending that kinda dough, so i walked away, but kept thinking about it. i came back 2 hours later and it was still there and got it for $350. not a smoking deal, but fair enough.

Beautiful box you have there. I'm still looking for one in quarter sawn oak so my early 40s rosewood will have to do for now.

The condition on yours is really nice and the original decal is still intact. Nice find and well worth the money. How does the felt look inside?

Yes a few small lead wheel weights are bad for the environment but they are running on a mixture of rock and tar. Makes perfect sense! :lol_hitti

Lots of good finds this weekend. I proclaim Bigcaddy as "King" of the weekend...I hope most here agree.

Today I scored a few Span-On ratchets plus numerous wrenches. I don't know much about the ratchets and haven't done any research yet but I think I did ok. I paid $85 for the lot, pics attached.

A Snap-On 1/2 in. No. 71N Pat. No. 1854513 and Snap-On 1/2 in. SR-715 I think were the best finds, what do ya'll think?

Included are six Snap-On GOEX wrenches, one Snap-On OEX wrench, three PLOMB line wrenches, four tappet wrenches: two proto, one cornwall & a craftsman, two large Snap-On breaker bars, other wrenches I'm not itemizing & a few other items.

Any info on these that the board can provide will be much appreciated.

Thanks,

KZ

Since posting, I've found some good info at collectingsnapon.com.
Date code "G"...found on another thread here...1945... on the 71N ratchet.
Date code "9" for the SR-715.....looks like 1949...lots of "9"codes.
