I used #6 x 3/8" white sheet metal screws to fasten the panels directly to 1" x 3" strapping. The screws are available in the same section at Home Depot where the panels are found.

Outstanding. I will do this after I do the landing/floor for my man door entrance. I am planning to use sleepers on gravel, then 5/4 board for the final floor.
Here in Austin, I received quotes anywhere from 2-4K for the entire garage.
There is a major trade shortage here, nobody even wants to mess with a 2 car garage. Finding good contractors here is tough and the good ones are way backed up.
Doing this myself, just bought a drywall gun and will rent lift. Going to install attic foil while I have access to the innermost parts of the roof.
OP, I'd do it yourself and buy a nice vacation afterwards.

How did you end the run of panels? Or did the whole panel fit without any modification? My luck will require 1/2 the width for last panel.

Not my thread but figured I'd update my post. After attempting this myself, even with a screw gun and lift, I hired a bunch of pros to complete the job which included all 4 walls. I fell off a ladder, sprained my ankle and nearly sliced my wrist open. Drywall is a *****!

Sorry - I just saw the above question. Each aluminum panel was 10' long. My garage is 20' deep. I ran the panels from front to back and cut 6" or so off each panel in the centre of the garage. I covered the ends in the centre of the garage with a 2' wide strip of plywood from one side of the garage to the other. I used the panel for mounting electrical and air lines. It was a lot easier than trying to match the ends of the aluminum panels.

I know Guys do it here and there, but I would never span Drywall (1/2" or 5/8") over 16".
My Brother-in-Law did that in his 30x25 garage and his ceiling has sags in it over the years.
The Humidity (Chicago weather) gets to the Drywall and even though he used 5/8" drywall spanning 24"...I'll bet over the last 10 years, he now has Sagging about 1.5 inches.
Drives him Crazy everytime that he walks in there.
He keeps talking about tearing it down and adding 16" crossbracing.
I really like the aluminum up there. I'll bet it reflects alot of light.

On the HD website, the cost is $17.95 and says it's a 16" by 10' piece.. 4 panel?
So is it $18 per 16" wide piece?

Then my math must be right... my shop being 40 deep/30 wide would cost over $1600 to do in soffit materials..
Drywall, at $7 sheet (4x8 - just for pricing, would use 10' for my project) would be just over $260 in drywall + tape and compound.
I'd much prefer the aluminum for the labour part, but at over $1000 more? Hmmm...

My shop is 32x56' with 13' 4" side walls. I stapled plastic to the bottom of the trusses, and I went with the metal liner on my ceiling. I had to rent a lift with the higher reach but i was able to do the shop myself, running J channel around the perimeter. I overlapped the panels so the ribs 'nest' and help you align the panels. Get the matching screws. Once up put that panel up YOUR DONE! No mud. No sanding. No primer. No paint. No clean up. No dust. No sweep. It's white and it's bright. Love it. Blew cellulose insulation above. The ceiling liner is less expressive than the metal roofing as it won't be exposed to the weather, etc. Good luck.

xrdad - You have the measurements right. I think I paid about $16.50 per panel but that was about 3 years ago. You might be able to find it for less but I liked the convenience of HD. I picked up 4 or 5 panels at a time and installed them at my own pace. I didn't gut my garage when I installed the ceiling, insulation, vapour barrier, etc. I worked around my various garage projects!

volleyball - You're right but the over lap was small, less than an inch, both sides included. They were very easy to fit together. Kind of like tongue and grove.

Thanks PC. I can appreciate what you were working around.. for me, the shop is going to be pretty much empty till the walls/ceiling are done.
rburke65 - metal panels? I need to check on what other options there are. Maybe a metal siding will be less $$ than the soffit? Can you tell how much I want to tape? LMAO!

Hauling home all that drywall and then lifting it up and screwing down, then going back to mudding, taping, mudding, sanding, mudding , sanding,mudding, sanding, mudding , sanding,mudding, sanding, mudding , sanding, then finally painting and that $1000 may not be so much.
What about vinyl soffit material. Seems the cheapest, easiest and with a few spare panels, easily repairable.
But no fire rating. Maybe the same with metal if not properly sealed.

damn right. drywall *****, but it's something anyone can do, especially in a garage where perfection & a timeframe for completion isn't as much of a priority.
just hang a few sheets per day after work.
when that's done, tape & mud a few sheets.
then mud, then sand, then repeat until it looks good.
you'll learn something & save a chunk of money in the process.
