I like the Klein with the screw holding magnet.

I also like nutdrivers with thin side walls, to get retaining nuts into tight areas.

I've got Milwaukee's nut drivers and have been pretty happy with them. Hollow shaft with a hex shank if you need to put a wrench on it for extra torque. My only slight gripe (may be a plus for some) is they are splined, not six point. I mainly use them for low torque interior fasteners in cars, so it hasn't been an issue for me.

Above your price range a bit, but I have these Xcelite Drivers in both SAE and metric and have had great luck with them.

I like the Xcelites with the colored handles, the colors make it easy to find the size you're looking for. They are a bit pricey new but they've been around forever and are easy to find used, I think I paid $8 for my set.

Thanks everyone for the great feedback!
I went ahead and ordered the Wiha hollow handled (343) set that is on sale at KC Tools - along with a non-hollow handled "heavy-duty" (347 series) 10mm and 12mm. Paid a little more than I really wanted to - but I've always been very happy with the Wiha products I've bought in the past. Plus, I've never regretted buying quality tools!

I have a full "Tech" set of Wiha's "precision" drivers in everything from flat, hex, phillips, and torx - I bought them probably 8 years ago thinking I'd only occasionally use them, but I was wrong. They're super useful, durable, and all-around great!

Anyway, I should see the Wiha nut drivers in a week or so (I'm a sucker for cheap shipping...) - I'll let you all know what I think of them when they arrive.

Even better is if you buy from here they are much cheaper, so you can add the 12mm and get it for about the same price.

You know... those guys (Chad's Tool Box) have missed out on about $300 worth of business from me by not answering their phone or returning a phone call following my voice messages. With the sole exception of Amazon.com, I won't place an order with a company unless I can talk to a live person. Too many bad experiences in the past with automated web ordering screwups.

I might be paying a bit more at KC Tool or Crawfords, but at least I can call and talk to someone, and make sure the order is right! :)

What I meant by "using them hard" is the typical car repair stuff - under car, on concrete, covered in grease, sometimes sliding, occasional drops or impacts from other tools and car parts... that kind of thing.
That does make more sense.
Looks like the best deal so far.
Depending where you live (shipping) these might be more cost effective

I like this design. I almost bought them a few months back when Carbide was doing their sale. Somebody makes nut drivers that have a 1/4" detent for use with a ratchet. Couldn't find them but those are a useful design too. Basically nut drivers are too vanilla.

So I have this drawer full of Craftsman SAE nut drivers, regular and Stubbie that I've collected over the years of thrifty shopping. I use them quite a bit, and got to thinking today that I'd like to add half a dozen Metric sizes that I run into working on my cars (I've just used 1/4 sockets with a driver handle up till now).

I don't want more Craftsman, I want something of a bit higher quality, that will stand out in the drawer and not blend in with the craftsman drivers.

I have a budget of around $40, and want at least 6mm, 7mm, 8mm, 10mm, 12mm, and maybe 5mm and 13mm.

Suggestions?

Klein.

I don't use nut drivers (that much). You could use a spinner and deep sockets; same stuff. Okay not exactly the same but if you're being cheap...

I have craftsman and they're fine. Most nutdrivers aren't going to be complete **** just...besides craftsman not readily available at retail because they're not very popular.

I think snap on makes the best nutdrivers. I really like the floating cover over the shaft. It allows you to hold and spin effortlessly. I use nutdrivers constantly vs a socket set up. I prefer the screwdriver action for not so tight things.

I agree and favor the Snap-On nut drivers; have both sae and metric..

Also have an older sae set of Craftsman; which have been good

Will be waiting for the pictures.... I agree on the hollow shaft nut drivers..

Well...

To my surprise, my Wiha drivers arrived in the mail today (wasn't expecting them until Monday).

They look really, really good - so far I'm thrilled with this purchase.

I'll try to photo them later this weekend... SUPER busy right now with the socket holder project.

Whew! Busy as hell this weekend! :)

I can't post a link to the set I bought, because in actuality I bought Wiha nut drivers from 3 different "sets" in order to end up with the sizes and styles I wanted.

I started out by buying the 7 pc. hollow handled set that KC Tool has on sale (Wiha P/N 34391), with sizes 5mm, 5.5mm, 6mm, 7mm, 8mm, 10mm, and 13mm.

http://www.kctoolco.com/wiha-softfinish-nutdriver-hollow-shaft-7-piece-set-p/34391.htm

I then added 2 "heavy duty" nut drivers, 10mm and 12mm, because those are the two metric sizes I use the most (Subarus are pretty much held together with 10, 12mm, and 14mm bolts).

Finally, because I'm OCD and didn't want missing sizes in my set, I added standard (not hollow handle, these sizes weren't available in hollow) in 9mm and 11mm.

Here is the final set I ended up with:

Here they are peacefully co-existing with my Craftsman SAE drivers:

Finally, a word on my impressions. These are VERY, VERY nice drivers (especially the 2 heavy-duty ones) - probably WAY better than I'll ever need. Handling them, I'm certain that no use I can think of could possibly break them, and the quality pretty much insures that they will be passed down to my descendents, possibly for several generations.

I am extremely happy with my purchase, and highly recommend these Wiha "soft finish" nut drivers to anyone who might be looking for similar tools.

Pretty good price. I like Wiha.

I own Klein in SAE and I will say this: I used them extensively and never had one fail. The idea that you cannot break nuts loose with these.....well that has not been my experience. My set goes to 9/16. The thing I do not like about the Klein, is the stenciling on the top (size) wears off too damn fast.

Anyone own the Wiha set in Sal's link?

NVM: missed page 3.

Old thread I know, but in case anyone finds this in a search, I'll add my 2 pennies, Gray hard handles:

http://www.thetoolstore.ca/viewItem.asp?idProduct=11359

I've got their SAE set and it's very nice. No matter how fancy screwdriver/nutdriver handles get, I still keep coming back to acetate fluted handles as my one of my favorites: very comfortable, yet allows lots of torque without a death grip on the driver.

And for my American colleagues, you'll only pay about 80 cents US/1 dollar CDN right now, so knock 20% off this Canadian price.

I'm loving the few Gray Canada tools I have. Didn't know they made these. Gotta get more Gray tools.... And I'm a red white and blue American! I don't care for hockey though! - Paul

I reach for these more often than I thought I would. Working on car interiors, no complaints. USA made too!

I'm with decaf on this one. A 1/4" driver handle and some sockets is pretty easy. Of course if you are using them constantly, the permanent solution in the form of a dedicated nut driver is worth it.
