The Good? Tekton has a solid warranty based off there Internet presence via Amazon etc.

The Middle? Maybe it was a dud?

The Bad? 18" of leverage in 3/8" drive tends to find weak spots. What where you wrenching on? Lol.. Did you slam the ratchet against the ground after it broke, looks like some chrome is missing.

Looks taiwan to me. So...what were you doing exactly because this stuff doesn't exactly have manufacturer defects across the board. Just saying. You see drive failure like this when it exceeds the torque capacity of the tool such as say...throwing on a 1/2" adapter and trying to take off an axle nut with a cheater bar.

???

I've seen high end ratchets do the same thing.
Long ratchets are for reach, not for use as a breaker bar. Not saying the OP used the ratchet as a breaker, just saying use the right tool for the job...

(Meanwhile... back in the REAL world...) :)

I'm gonna go out on a limb and say the complete story is not being told here.. I've purposely broken a HF ratchet to warranty it, and it took ALOT to accomplish that.. The fleet mechanics couldn't belive what it took, and that's exactly what happened.. A long handled ratchet is not a replacement for a breaker bar...

Pretty much a stupid tool. Any 3/8" drive of anything is going to have a hard time when somebody has 18" of leverage. When you get to that lever arm it's 1/2" all the way.

I sell a nice 1/4" drive flex head ratchet that's 7" long. A customer busted my balls telling me that he wanted a longer one. I asked him what super metal he intended to make the 1/4square drive from that could withstand a truly long 1/4" ratchet handle. Has anybody else noticed how socket handles are getting longer and longer. Sooner or later the drive ends are going to fail under such extreme duress. It's a stupid manufacturer who makes a tool that without the customer doing anything "illegal", like using a pipe over the handle, can break the tool normally and force a warrantee repair. To me this in normal.

i did smash it against the garage floor after it broke, as far as i know the internals let go but i didn't even bother to open it. I was not using a cheater pipe that was just a little torque with my two hands on a strut to knuckle bolt. i know its not a breaker bar but they claim it can be used to break some stubborn bolts loose so i figured id try it torque spec on the bolt was 90 ft/lbs.

"High-performance chrome moly ratchet gear delivers up to 2,340 inch/pounds of torque, exceeding ANSI standard by 30 percent"

Converts to a rating up to 195 ft/lbs working capacity as claimed by tekton so i figured it could handle a knuckle bolt torqued at 90ft/lbs

I've always read of good experiences with Tekton warranty, but you've got a great chance to further report on it for us all.

2340 inch pounds in that ratchet is no different than saying your diesel pickup has 400 hp and 550 ftlb torque. That isn't the working level, that is max rated.

That is also only 130 lbs of pull on the end of a 18 inch ratchet, you should probably be able to do that with one hand if you have the room. I guarantee I could pull more than double that with both hands like you said you did and would expect to break that thing the same way.

Their warranty is good, now get a 1/2 drive so you don't break another one and be happy you aren't bleeding from this one.

We also don't know what 'a little' torque from the op's two hands were. I've worked with some grape ape guys who were insanely strong. I recall one time a co worker (around 6'5, 300+) was working to straighten part of a hitch for a customer. The hitch was in a vise on a heavy work table (not bolted to the floor). Myself and 3 other mechanics were holding onto the other end and he moved the vise some on it's bolts to the table, the table and all of us holding it just with him on the other end and his 'two little hands' lmao.

you figured wrong, should have taken physics in school instead of standing out behind the gym smokin weed!:lol_hitti

if a bolt is torqued at 90 ft-lbs, depending on the condition of the threads and other factors, it could easily take 400 or more ft-lbs. to break that same bolt!

Yet another "READ MY POST....COMPLETE FAIL!!"

These seem to be popping up a lot lately.....tools break....that is why they have warranties.

I can see complaining IF you legitimately broke something & the company refused to honor the warranty.....but the constant brand bashing & complaining on here every time someone breaks the tip off of a screwdriver is really getting old.

the COMPLETE FAIL was the brain cells of the OP - there is nothing wrong with this Tekton tool, I own it, it is designed for long reach, not applying twice the torque it was engineered for and then whining when it breaks, good grief!

This is not just abuse, it's EXTREME abuse completely the fault of negligence, NOT the tool.

In fact, knock on wood, Tekton is one of the few tool brands I have yet to ever have a failure on.

The problem with these XL's is that they aren't meant as breaker bar replacements but end up as them some times. With that kind of length it's easy for the leverage to get out of hand.

Send me an email and I'll have a replacement out your way.

I had that ratchet, sheared off the square drive on first use, I had a 1/2 adapter and was attempting to take off the axle nut on my Trailblazer, I did this on purpose to test the strength of the ratchet, also I knew something was going to break.

called up Tekton and they sent a new ratchet in the mail

so you broke it on purpose and got a replacement from them? did you tell them that you broke it on purpose or it just failed from using it? I hope you paid for the replacement.

I don't think it's a complete fail because, although the high and mighty will preach that the long handle is only for access like to reach serpentine belt tensioners, we all know that we're going to push it and see how much torque you can get out of it. It was more of a learning event wherein you learned how far to push that particular ratchet. I use flex head ratchets for their added length and torque. I've broken fasteners loose with ratcheting wrenches. If you get away with it, no crime, no foul. If the tool breaks, you've learned in real world terms its limits. When a tool breaks (and they all break sooner or later regardless of whose name is on it) I don't blame the tool necessarily depending on the situation. No one should start tracing its family ancestry and just grab the next tool to do the job at hand.
Just like new cars have crumple zones to absorb impact, many square drives are designed to shear off before you really could hurt yourself.
Don't get mad, don't blame the tool, find something that works and move on to the next task. Hey that chrome looked pretty good for beating it against the concrete floor.:dunno::beer:

Relax bud, tekton is decent it will hold up for most people like yourself but when the tough gets going you need real tools for real work they fall short i subjected this ratchet to the same things i use my normal tools for. I used a long handle 3/8 williams ratchet to finish the job it didn't break....

I've made the mistake of fighting with a strut bolt before, if trying to turn the bolt to loosen it a lot more than the torque spec will be needed because the way the teeth on the bolt head grip the strut and the fact that some bolts are cam shaped. I've found it's much easier to loosen the nut instead of the bolt. Still something I reserve my 1/2" drive tools for usually.

I Was cranking on the nut, like you said usually in that application its easier to crank on the nut and then back the bolt out after the nut is loose. Or at least thats what we learn at school.

Not really designed for that. I'd have used a breaker bar. I have breaker bars in 4 different sizes. Some mechanics I know only have a large breaker bar, and when it doesn't fit in an opening where they are working, they just use a ratchet.

I inherited a nice set of Motgomery-Ward's tools from my step dad and there are 4 different sizes of breaker bars in 1/4", 3/8", and 1/2". Newer sets often omit them for some reason.

Gotta get me one of the tekton ratchets

Any time I have to mess with suspension bolts / nuts I pull out my 1/2" drive stuff or even the impact gun

no kidding. tarheel is trollling himself

Somebody has to do it.. The whole premise from the Import tool or Bust crowd is that Everyone always picks on them and there tool selection. Lets scroll back to the Broken HF ratchet thread and Now to this Tekton thread, I have yet to see any substantial Import bashing at all, Now lets head on over the Out of the box defect of the Proto Wrench and just watch the trolls at work. Hell even the OP of that thread is bringing the troll to this thread in #5:

You should have bought a quality built american tool; they never have any defects right out of the box....

http://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=268460

Food for thought next time someone cries in there cheerios about there tools getting bullied at Work.
