The 1/4 is already longer than most std length brand.....but not as long as my matco. If you need that much force step up to a larger and longer drive.

Haven't seen one in person, so wasn't really sure how long it actually was

Local store only had 1/2" drive ones last few times I was there looking for them

The 1/4" drive ratchet is a lot smoother than I expected. It twisted off a 1/4" bolt and 3/8" bolt no problem. When I tried a 1/2 bolt one of the pawls broke and 3 teeth sheared off. HF replaced it no questions asked.

So now I have used the new HF 3/8" flex on a couple more projects. the head is too loose for my liking. Its just enough to make use aggrevating. It isn't taking the place of my other ratchets with notches and ball bearing. I was really wanting to like this better because its appears to be a fine tool otherwise.

Yep. I was afraid of that. Main reason I haven't used mine yet. It's way to smooth if you ask me. I know that sounds *** backwards but it feels as it doesn't engage well. The 3/8s and 1/2 don't have this problem I have noticed.

I have a few with detents and I prefer without. A locking would be nice o own. I reaally want an armstrong. The freeness of the head works good for me buzzing long fasteners on and off. The handle will kind of move with you through the motions wherever your hand has a free spot to work. Id never use it one handed for busting loose stubborn fasteners

Well, I was rotating the tires on my GF's Expedition yesterday, and whoever did it last cranked down the lugs on one of the wheels (just one!) to where my M12 2454 wouldn't budge them. Normally, in a situation like this I would resort to a Snap On 24" breaker bar, but I thought I'd give the long HF 1/2" a test. I was bouncing just about all of my body weight (330ish pounds) on it to try and break the lugs loose. I was impressed it didn't slip or strip the internals.

If I ever run across the jack wagon who torqued the lugs on a 5'2" woman's truck to well over 400ft-lbs., we will have a short, abrupt talk...

You guys do realize that almost all the 72 tooth ratchets are harbor freight are exactly the same right? Even the composites?. They are all the same internals just placed in a different style handle.. You can take them out of one and put them in any other..
See...
image.jpg

And Kobalt and Tekton and Genius and William and Performax and Crescent and just about everything else 72t from Taiwan.

i will have to disagree and say this is false. the composite ratchets seem to use the same internals. the chrome flex handled versions with the rubber handles use a thinner gear and pawl. they will not interchange.

This is unethical behavior. You may abuse and destroy any tool you wish that you have paid for, but you should certainly not take the tool that you purposely destroyed and expect the seller to give you a replacement.

Not any different than turning in a false insurance claim. Result is we all end up paying more for the product to cover your fraud.

It is covered in the price Harbor Freight charges when they commit fraud stating professional or worth anything more than zero.

So does anyone have a fix for the heads becoming Floppy as all hell. Tightening the screw has not helped

I would not spend more than $15.00 at HF I'd probably go with Snap-On or Matco. Why waist so much money on junk tools?

At $25 each you can buy 10 of these ratchets compared to the $250 for the same exact thing from snap-on.......
So there for if one ratchet lasts 1 year..... Then you get 10 years worth of service out of them......

But like the saying goes "Each to their own I guess"

i still cant bring my self to buying a roto head. i cant think of one job it will do a flex head wont.

I've wanting to grab the 3/8 and 1/2 for home use, I do use SO at work and I'm gonna tell you $60 won't touch a SO 1/2 flex ratchet.

but why would it only work for one year? that last 1/2" HF ratchet i bought is still going strong after 7, and it's had a ton of abuse on it.

They are nice to use as a nutdriver when you have broken a bolt loose. Also, I find them easier to ratchet with one hand than a flex. Don't get me wrong, they don't replace a flex, but they are nice to have.

I don't own any, but I heard the threads on the screw are too short so it will bottom out on the shoulder before it tightens. One guy said he ran a tap down the screw and added a couple of threads and was able to get them tight. Not sure if this is the case with your ratchet, but it would be a quick and easy fix if it is.

i can sell you a 3/8 flex with an adapter for 60.00 :)

owning both snap on and the hf stuff, i can tell the quality when wrenching using them back to back, but for the price difference the average person will be more than happy with the hf stuff.

Got mine about a week ago...Not as nice as my Carlyle rats...but really nice for the $$$.....way to go HF.... I will probably give them to the 'kids" to play with at the Co garage for a while...then they will end up on one of the service trucks.

I looked at the local store again today, still no long 3/8" or any 1/4" drive ones. Gah

I didn't even see a spot for the 1/4" drive ones, so not sure the local store has them

But where's the proof they are junk?

I've got the truck brands and they are nicer IMO, but that doesn't mean these are junk.

They are obviously junk as they aren't Snap-On. This is the mantra of several people here. They think this without proof, and certainly without ever having used them. The fact the Harbor Freight has almost certainly sold more of these in the last month than Snap-On has in the last twenty years is irrelevant and the fact that the people that have bought and used them haven't reported a single failure doesn't matter either. The one member that tested one to destruction was completely amazed at how much it took to make it fail and that also doesn't matter. If a Snap-On fails you have to blow the driver to get it repaired or replaced and if the HF fails you take it in and with no questions asked you take another off the shelf and walk out of the store. This is completely irrelevant as well. You're fighting against RELIGION and that's a battle that facts never win. They believe and that's that. Ozzie Osborne summed it all up in his great line from "War Pigs", "Poisoning their brainwashed minds." SNA is up 28% for the year. As a shareholder I love these people. BUY MORE SNAP-ON!!!

Yup. I have been completely happy with the 1/2" long one I have. Do I use it every day all day? No. Would I PREFER a Snap-On if the price were the same? Of course.

But, they aren't priced the same. The average Joe wrenching on his cars on the weekend isn't going to spend $200+ on a ratchet when a $25 one will do the exact same job. Well, I won't say none will..but MOST won't, nor should they

I think HF is hitting a goldmine by making SOME tools that are in the ballpark quality wise of the "higher end" brands and charging so little for them. Some of their stuff is ****, no doubt about that.. I think we would all rather pay $25 for the current HF one than $15 for a cheaper piece of **** version. It's all about finding the right balance, and in this case, it appears they've done a good job with it.

Also, SNA stock is down this morning. What'd you do Schmidt?? lol

I don't think too many people really understand what is unethical anymore. :willy_nil

I'll never sell. As P. T. Barnum so accurately stated: "There's a sucker born every minute." I'm depending upon it.
