Hi from the other side of the Atlantic, I've been on this forum for a couple of years now, so I thought it's about time I posted about my garage. Just a couple of photos for today, we're 6 hours in front of some of you so its getting late here.

My place 1926.

My place 1982, the year I bought it.

My place today

Here is the garage, this shot was taken in 1989 when I was using it as a repair shop.

If anybody is interested in more, I will sort more photos over the weekend and maybe post a little history of myself and the garage.

Martin: I see you were able to post up a few pictures. i grew up in a brick house and really like that look.

keep posting pictures and ask if you have any questions or we'll just sit back and enjoy the build/remodel or organizing of your garage.

Welcome to GJ Martin. There's a few of us on here from Blighty! Really like the old 1920s shot you have of the house. My neighbour has some within steam-powered threshing machines and the like in his farm yard but alas my place was just an empty field even just 30 years ago so nothing much 'historical' to look back at for it.

Thanks for the interest guys, just spent the day rearranging cars and stuff in the garage to give me more room to work on my projects, a few more hours clearing to do yet. Too much stuff, not much junk tho'. I took a few pics but before I post them I will find some earlier pics to give the thread some order.
I guess maybe I should tell you a little about myself first.
Born in'47 so I am officially an "Old fart" have been for a couple of years now. My Father was a Blacksmith/farrier who taught me a lot, he also owned a '37 Buick and a '35 Packard, both woodies, which I guess started my love for American cars, I sometimes wish I had taken his trade but my interest lay with cars so when I left school I went into the motor trade working in a local garage and attending tech college one day a week, this job lasted about a year until I had a row with the boss over his attitude to customers, and I walked out.
I continued college but went working for my Dad, he owned a filling station, blacksmiths shop and workshop for agricultural repairs, called The Forge Garage, but no car repairs, until I started, okay I was young but I had been tinkering with cars since I was "knee high to a grasshopper" a friend joined me who was pretty good at panel beating and I could wield a spray gun, so we started body repairs, this was quite successful until my friend needed a mortgage, not easy when you're self employed so he needed to go get a job with a regular wage.
I had itchy feet and felt like doing some thing else so we both went and got a job in construction, me as a backhoe operator and he as a dozer driver, I ended up on pipelines operating a 360 digger, until I got itchy feet again, another friend had just started driving for Amoco UK delivering petrol/gasoline, his basic wage was almost twice I was earning in seven days, so I packed my job in got my class 1 truck licence and went low loader driving until I secured a job with Amoco. This lasted for about 18 years until I lost my partner to the big C in Dec '88.
I went back to work for a few weeks but my heart wasn't in it so I left, one of her two sons who was living with us also gave up his job in a local garage and we started a repair business in my garage, you can just see the two of us in the ,89 photo. This lasted until I found a new partner and he didn't like the fact I had a new lady in my life so he up and left. I continued repairing cars until a friend who had a WW 2 Jeep and a GMC. I had a Jeep and a GMC too, said' I need new seats and canvas where can I get some? I said how about we make our own ok he said so in'98 Allied Forces Canvas was born, we had taught ourselves to sew and started a new career. the business grew and we moved to larger premises in 2002. I retired in June 2012 to enjoy my hobbies.
I hope I have not bored you, if not maybe I will tell you about the cars and military vehicles I have owned and the Rods and Race cars i have built, or is this the wrong forum for this, perhaps I had better just post about my garage.
As for the questions you guys have asked I'll answer them tomorrow its nearly midnight here and I'm tired.

Your story is well received, and I for one would love to hear as much as you would like to share. If you have them, also share some more pictures, they help make it all come alive. Cheers!

Martin: it's your thread so we like to know as much about the man as the garage. remember the GJ "golden rule" to post lots of pictures of your garage and if you don't have any for a while and have something to say post a few pictures of the UK's sites we over here probably will never see in person.

cheers and welcome back

I have just asked my 70yr old mum to write down the family history, as she got all the information and knowledge. Too many "old farts" die and with that their history and stories. So, I humbly request for you to share and keep sharing your stories! Otherwise one day, they'll be gone forever...

Hello from a cold and windy Shropshire. Sounds like an interesting life and the old garage looks great, I love an old building, hence my house being around 400 years old and my garage over 100. I'm also a fan of American cars currently having an S10 blazer as my daily and a 67 Chevy pickup and a collector of WWII militaria. My wife has wanted a WWII jeep or similar military vehicle for years but sadly prices always seem be moving slightly in advance of my wallet!

Whereabouts in the UK are you? I'm guessing from the location of your old business you're somewhere downhill a bit from me in Gloucestershire.

Hi Stephan. Family history is priceless my parents told me much about their lives. My own life has been very eventful I could write a book. Give my love to your mum, and tell her YES.;)

Funny as i saw the first picture and title i was wondering, "I have a '67 MG Midget and '48 Vincent Rapide in my garage i wonder if he has any American iron in his?"

Yes, small world. That garage looks great and you certainly have lived an interesting life so far. Keep the pictures and stories coming.

Hi Brian thanks for the compliment. You're a lucky guy to own a Vincent I'm not really a bike guy but if I had a choice between the Midget and the Vincent I would take the Vincent, great engineering.

Ok I guess I had better post some pictures of my garage build. I didn't take many, it was 29-30 years ago before digi cameras and camera phones.
The first two show the front, it was about 40' wide and 48' front to back with dirt floors.

I knocked down the left front quarter

To make room for the house extension.

During the house build any extra concrete went into the garage floor.

Demolition :3gears:

Had to dig deep to find solid base for footings.

No photos until back half up to roof.

Found another (out of sequence sorry)

Almost finished.

The garage is 21' by 48'. I know i should have made it wider, but my better half wanted a garden and who was I to argue.
I had a friend with a backhoe to dig the footings and later lift steel joists into place. I did all the blockwork timber and roofing and made the window frames and the doors, my partners son helped carrying blocks and mixing cement when he was around. I did have to pay a guy to cement render the outside, I can do bondo on cars but not cement render on walls.
Well that's it for today 2 hours to do this post, I'm getting better at typing I can use 2 fingers now. and I'm learning where the letters are on the keyboard, still have difficulty finding the Q :headscrat.
Next installment interior

Very nice, Martin. I have a '44 GPW and we both know that's the Ford version, not the Willys. Mine is hot rodded with a vintage Corvette motor and C7 axles. But the tyres (as you would say) are tucked under the original bodywork.

Keep it coming, man, I've lovin' it.
