What do you guys think would be a good price for this lathe, https://www.flickr.com/photos/94611274@N04/ . He want's $250 but being the cheap person I am I'm thinking $175, opinion?

I searched a lot earlier this year and never come close to a deal like that. I wouldn't think twice about $ 250.00. It looks like everything is in good shape, I would check out all the gears and such, but it just looks good in the photos.
It has pretty much everything you would need to make chips soon as you got it home...............

Thanks for all the replies, haven't heard back from him yet but from what everyone here says it's worth the $250 he's asking. Hopefully it's not sold yet, I'll let everyone know if I get it. Thanks
It's very fair*, you're cheap. That is a very old lathe, and while it can do quite a bit, especially teaching, if you really want to produce parts, hold out for a more modern machine.

Being I only know how to spell the word "Lathe" that's all I need.
Just picked it up for $175, couldn't be any more happier with my purchase.

It is late March 1928.
I think you did just fine, is it new with all the extra features? No, but it is still a pretty nice little lathe. My first was a 1947 version of this same SB. It was a change gear machine as well and it never affected my use of it, what did limit me was the work envelope, most everything I wanted to do was too big for it, ended up trading up, wish I had figured out a way to keep it while still getting the others.
Oh, the gears aren't 'extra', they are what you install to get a certain feed rate or pitch for threading. The chart on the gear cover tells you which ones to put where when the time comes. To thread you will also want a threading dial, but not absolutely a have to item.
There is a ton of info online about SB machines, here is my favorite site http://www.wswells.com/
You can also learn a tremendous amount by reading everything you can over on practical machinist in the SB forum, ( http://www.practicalmachinist.com/vb/south-bend-lathes/ ) go ahead and go back to the beginning and you will see topics on every part of these lathes and learn a bunch in the process.
Oh, do not take the headstock bearing caps off until you read the proper way to do it.
It is great that you got the counter shaft with it, I have seen those go for more than you paid for the whole machine.

Major suckage. There was one on CL like that for $2300 which was cheap here in VA. There's also a ton of info on the South Bends. They put out excellent how to books in the 40s. Look for a copy of "How to Run a Lathe". Lindsy Books used to reprint them. I think you can find them easily enough. If they're selling lathes in your part if the woods that cheap I'd keep buying and resell them! Also look into books on how to set up lathe.
