stay away from these awful craftsman impact wrenches, unless you are looking for something that can't move a bolt.

If you never owned one, you would have little reason to know better. Some of us have thrown away the money for these. My 18v Hitachi hammer drill has more torque.

Are u talking about the composite they had by the holiday sections stuff? That one was rated at 400 ft lbs.. How bad could it be for $20? The husky I have is only rated at 350 and it's done anything I've needed..

These are absolute junk. If you buy this, you'll end up owning 2 guns. This one, that cant do anything, and a 2nd one that can actually get work done.

If you don't want to move bolts, this is the one to get.

Yep, if you're set on a 1/2" Craftsman, the 19984 or the 19905 is so much better. 19905, is just an Ingersoll Rand 2131 in black. More money, but lots more torque. 19984 is Florida Pneumatic. Both are good wrenches.
Otherwise, search out a good used one on ebay or Craigslist for not much more than this weakling is new.

Depends on what you need....I took lug nuts off of a coach today with my 1/2" Nitrocat after the crack spread up the side of my 3/4" drive impact socket I was using on an Ingersoll Rand 2141. Same lugs and wheels as a semi truck. Not many 1/2" impacts that will do that, there's a few out there, but not many. It's really nice to have the torque when it's needed. I started out small years ago, and hated that weak wrench, got stronger and stronger ones and never looked back.

My first 1/2" impact was a craftsman. It is actually a CP with craftsman sticker on the back plate (even has CP molded in the aluminum housing). This was in '85. Biggest POS I have ever used. Will not take off lug nuts. It has sat in my box for the last 30 yrs. unused. I have older HF chinese impacts that work better, and my HF earthquake is 4x the gun. My mom paid $89 for it on my 17th birthday...just sayin' for the money, it is probably a better gun than the older craftsman/chicago Pneumatics...I may just pick one up if I still have the bonus 10,000 SYW points available..

Have a 3/8 with similar design characteristics, I would be entitled to a Goon award if I bought a second finish peeling, doggy, auto-jamming winner like I have, which came with a $75 price taq

I have one sitting in the bottom of a drawer. It is the weakest 1/2 impact I have ever used

I've heard good things about the Nitrocat and AirCat impacts and have thought about pulling the trigger on one. (Pun intended). Bought a Craftsman 1/2 drive many years ago and never thought it was very good since it struggled with lug nuts I could break loose with an average size breaker bar.

After reading the comment about Craftsman impacts, I will probably go for an AirCat or NitroCat and will probably be amazed the first time I use it!

The 3/8" is labeled as the strongest in it's class, I wonder if it would replace a bad 1/2" for average use?

So what a decent gun for those of us that don't use the air gun every weekend? $100 or less? I haven't seen any cyber week deals worthwhile for air tools

the harbor freight 1/2 inch earthquake impact was a good buy all this weekend and Monday

can be had for 75-85 on sale plus a coupon, may have to wait for the next offer to pop up, I imagine it will happen again before xmas

It's a decent gun for the money, though some say they are not the same quality that they were some years ago(I know that sounds funny mentioning quality and harbor freight)

either that or keep your eyes open for something used

I really like them. There's some other crazy strong ones out there, but the pin style anvil and muffler on the Nitrocat's , to me it just makes them nicer to use. I have a 1000M that I have put 1200K internals in. The 3/8" is crazy strong, I just sold one and the guy can't believe the torque it has. Another really strong 3/8" that's a real nice gun is the Cornwell CAT2150, or Matco MT2138, same gun, different color and branding. 500 ft. lbs. and smallest, shortest 3/8" I can think of. One of my personal favorites for sure.
Many will argue that Ingersoll Rand's can't be beat for the durability and they are good wrenches ,but like any air tool I've seen, they have their issues as well.
I had a Matco MT2769 and it was crazy strong, but it felt cheap to me.

From what I've seen, when you go cheap, you just won't have the power behind the gun. So weekend user or not, when you're pulling off a stubborn crankshaft bolt you want every bit of power you can muster, otherwise you're going to be dead in the water.

I agree with what others have said that the HF earthquake seems to have good reviews (I dont have one). I do however have an aircat and it was worth every penny. No point in buying a 100 dollar gun, to get stuck unable to finish a job and have to button everything back up to either take it down to a mechanic or have to then go spend more money on a tool that can do the job.

Seems like a lot of folks like the AirCat and NitroCat. Think that will be my choice but not sure if I want the smaller 3/8" for easy access or the 1/2" for bigger suspension stuff....:dunno:

A coworker of mine has a 3/8" aircat.
I have a 3/8 Snap on MG325.

We haven't conducted a scientific test, but running the two side by side, the aircat feels more powerful, although it has a horrible trigger. There is no feathering that one for light work, it's either on, or it's off, there is no in between.

I can second that for both of those.

I don't know why it is so common for many people to use truck lugs as their goto example of a tough nut for which they need a big impact. I've busted truck lugs with a good 1/2 gun (sometimes even with a compact model) with little fuss. Maybe this called for a 3/4 impact 15 years ago, but today's 1/2" impacts are as powerful as the 3/4" impacts from back then, however rust hasn't gotten any stronger since then.
