I just purchased my first home and it has a Craftsman Part Number: 41A4315-7D. It's a 1/2 hp opener that works with the button on the wall. There was a remote that the previous owner left in the house that doesn't do anything. I've held the program button on the opener for 10 sec to clear any codes stored and attempted to reprogram.

I replaced the battery in the remote still no response. The remote looked pretty old so I bought a new Liftmaster 371LM remote and tried to program with the instructions on the opener. Still no response.

I felt like I read that the liftmaster remote would work with this opener. The receiver on the opener could be bad but I'm not sure how to test that. Are there aftermarket receivers that can turn a non-remote opener into a remote controlled one? Am I better off just getting a whole new opener?

Thanks for any input.

In my experience, Craftsman openers were made by Chamberlain and not Liftmaster. You may want to try one of their remotes.

I spoke with chamberlain and said that that remote should work. We concluded that it could be the logic board :(

The craftsman opener has a red learn button and the led lights when I press it. But using the remote I have doesn't cause it to blink. I'm more tempted to just get a new one that I know works but idk.

Thanks for the help guys and gals.

They do make a universal replacement radio. It basically wires into the opener like another push button. Chamberlain 955d is one. However, I think you might already have one. What is the white box that is plugged into the outlet along with your closer? I think I see a white wire that goes from it to the opener.

Putting this all together, I'm thinking that the receiver in the opener is toast, the remote you got with the house works but is the original to the opener, the remote you bought works and the remote to the universal radio kit is missing.

This receiver on ebay will work with the 371LM remote you bought and wire into the existing opener and it is only $18 shipped.

Just keep in mind that Liftmaster and Chamberlain are identical and interchangeable. The color codes of learn buttons correspond to the same receiver technologies in both. In the case of the 371LM (liftmaster remote) and the 955D (chamberlain universal receiver) both are set up with 315mhz security + technology which has purple learn buttons and uses the ((())) symbology.

I've always found these links helpful:

371lm remote would work if your opener has a purple learn button. Red is also known as security plus so the remote would be a 971lm. Liftmaster recently came out with a universal remote to work with all chamberlain rolling codes. 891max

Well, good luck! I called Chamberlain and they WERE VERY helpful, but garage door operators need a specific type of remote transmitter for each model of operator. Some types will operate more than one model of operator, but others will work with one the operator that they came with. Interchangeability is a dirty word in the overhead door operator business. Chamberlain tried to get me fixed up so I could use the same remotes for all the doors that I need to control, but even they couldn't do it.

I have operators at 5 different locations, and in order to open them all my sun visor looks like something that NASA would launch.

Thanks for all the help. I went with rslaback's ebay suggestion, and it worked like a charm.

Thanks again.
