For that kind of money you could find a real nice vise on the used market. An old 4-5" swivel or fixed, even a combination vise if you do much pipe or deep work. Heck keep and eye out and you could get one of each.

An all a rounder? 4-5" easily replaceable jaws, removable swivel base, potentially pipe jaws depending on your work. Or good size pipe vise.

Although Yost makes a very nice new USA vise, if I had a budget of $400, I would be patient and hunt for a great old used one on ebay, craigslist, or here on the classifieds, etc.

You would likely end up with a vise that cleans up to new condition, and would be the size and quality that would cost $1500 - $2000 from Yost!

Vises tend to age really, really well!

I have been patiently looking and within 400 miles of my location hence why I am going to buy a new one. I have a nice littlestown no.25 that I purchased locally but now it is time for a proper vise.

I was able to find a 212 lb. made in usa BEAST for within your budget, without too long of a search.

It costs $2600 delivered, had I ordered it new.

I think it's a "proper" vise!

I have a new yost 33c, their second largest. Superior vice. Before I had a bead breaker I used it to bust the beads on a Camry. 96 pounds of toughness. Retail is close to 1200 but I found one at Sears for 825.00. Before I saw it I thought the only way to get a vice built like this was to get one from pre WWII. I beleive the only diffeenece between new and old is the lack of lead in the paint.

I also have Yost's smallest vice but that is a differnt story...

I have a 205 and a 34C and I have been very happy with both of them. You should be able to find a 203,4,5 for your budget. But, they don't have pipe jaws.

Yost is the best bang for the buck in new USA made vises. Nobody will doubt their quality to anything else out there. You are treading on on unholy GJ ground in even considering buying a new vise when we all know CL is full of $30 Wilton 800s:lol_hitti

If is was willing to buy a brand new vise, I think I would look outside the box and consider a modern high-tech version such as the German-made Ridgid vises.

For less than $400 you can get their largest model, 6-inch, made with forged steel and machined to high tolerances:

A classic style vise (like the Yost) is best purchased used.

^^^+1.

I'd get the Ridgid over the Yost if I were shopping for a new vise.

I had the Ridgid 6" and it was an excellent vise. I reluctantly sold it when I found a Wilton C-2.

The Ridgid is stronger then cast iron vises and there's less bulk which makes them very versatile.

My last vise had pipe jaws and i never used them. So no i don't really miss them. Plus a high quality vise can mount a piece of pipe without problem.

That Ridgid is not a machinist vise. Notice how there is only a small machined section at the top of the sliding portion. That will mean there are only 2 precision supported sides. That vise is best for a rough mechanics shop. Notice how the Yost has a full machined slide? That keeps the jaws very well aligned and keeps from gouging metal.

I plan to get another vise to beating the absolute **** out of when i need to (as i wouldn't dare ruin my nice machinist vise). However, it's not going to be a Yost or a Ridgid. It's going to be a post/leg vise!

I bought my Yost 32C in literally "new" condition for $60 off CL. Not a bad vise at all, but I would definitely suggest looking around for something vintage and larger.

I was lucky enough to get a 32C from another member here for $100. I'll never look back and never need another vise (unless I want MORE). Money well spent to replace the cheap China one I had before that.

That is a great looking vise. I am definitely ok with a German made vise.

they are nice and open extra wide, but not sure I would want that for my only vise. Maybe as a 2nd one. Depends what kind of work you do...

If you're building trucks or something that is not the best "only" vise to have imho. If you're a home tinkerer, sign up!

I also have a 33C, mine is a 1978 that I restored to pristine condition. Superior vise is right. It's just plain awesome. Worth your time to find a big old Yost and fix it up.

Then buy two of these new Yost 32C vises for $180 each. But I do not know how far you are from the California Central Coast. The ad is deceiving though. I hear they are selling NOS Yost 32C vises, but they are the older style 32C with the non-chromed handles with pinched handle ends, not ball ends. But still, it is a new Yost vise for very cheap. Originally they were selling them for $140. I wonder how many they really have.
