So I've lurked for a while, now I'm here. Basically I'm no expert at garage building, there are some very nice buildings here. I'm looking to build a 25x25 shop in my backyard. I'm a disabled vet and work for myself now parting out cars. I pay $550 a month rent at the shop I'm at now (which is almost as much as my mortgage), not to mention the fuel to drive back and forth and I'm sick of it. So what I'm looking for is advice on how to go about building, what will be my best option? I'm looking to get the structure up and upgrade later on as funds permit. I received a quote on one of those metal buildings here and would rather build for that money. I got a quote today to get the concrete poured, it will be $660, with me digging the footing and smoothing. I would assume that 2x4 framing would be my most cost effective option. I would only want 1 walk through door and 1 garage door. I can do the electrical myself.

Here is a pic of my backyard. I can go bigger but the larger the more expensive.

Welcome to Garage Journal . Good luck on your building project. I'll bet you won't miss that rent payment ! I would love to have a bigger place myself. I manage to work in a one car garage now. You'll find alot of info & opinions on this site. I usually hang out in classified or tool discussion. I think I'm addicted to buying and selling tools.

Nice blank slate! I'd getquotesfrom a few garage-package people, as well as erected metal buildings.

What kind of cars do you part-out? Do you sell the stuff locally, ebay? Haven't actually heard of someone doing that from home - could be a good home business!

mainly classic stuff, G bodies, 60's mustangs etc etc. It pays the bills, I'm not rich by far. If I could build this I would save roughly $6,000 a year in just rent, not to mention utilities and fuel for driving to "work" everyday.

Dont know what part of the country you are in...but you might want to consider zoning issues of running a business in a residential zoned area...I dont want to discourage you..I just want to save you some heartache and pocket loss...good luck...and God speed!

my business licenses and such are all linked back to my home address, I live off of a county highway which can be considered commercial. My neighbor runs a car lot at his house with a big sign in front of it. LOL thanks for the potential heads up though. Basically I live out in the country.
