Yeah they aren't all SCORES!

I drove (quite a ways!) for a CL ad for an 8" wilton. Nope it OPENS to 8" :wtf: the ad originally SAID opened to 12" jaws 8" depth 5 something...

It was a 4" (but he had 2 of them! No, it don't count...) I left them there...

Nine,---the old fox looks up at the grapes he can't reach and says sour grapes anyway.---I'm going to say that was a No. 3 R, just photo shopped.---Clearly a case of bait and switch just like what happened to Outlaw.---That's the story I'm going with.

Thanks for the thoughts guys, after you all started with the 208 business, my head started hurting thinking about it...I waited until 9am and contacted her to find out the other guy bought it all, right after that I went to sleep

I'm nocturnal Drives, my normal sleep pattern is about 4am-12pm but it varies depending CL listings...:lol_hitti

Sorry about your bad luck. It makes me think of the advice that a friend gave me about buying real estate. He said to add some money to the asking price, if it's a sweet deal, regardless of what other buyers are doing. Highest bidder wins.

Edit: I hope it's one of our friends here that got the win, or a future
"vise-oholic".

Well that 474 went for >$333 and jumped more than a C-note in the last few seconds by a sniper. (not me)

So much for hoping xmas shopping would pull some bidders off it. 6 bidders went > $200, 4 of those went over $300...

Looks like I might have to pull out my swivel heads that I may or may not have and slap them on E-bay.

Funny thing about those snipers.---The Marines spend years and millions of dollars to train a man to place a killer shot up to 1500, 1600 hundred yards.---E-bay spends nothing on theirs, and theirs can place a shot half way round the world.

Standard is 4'' jaws----42.2 lbs.

Metro is 4'' jaws----40.6 lbs.

Morgan 140 is 4'' jaws----52.2 lbs.

Awwwww geez, I forgot to watch the show.
It sounds like this episode was almost as good as the last one.
I sure hope this show doesn't get canceled.
I think it still has a few seasons left in it.

These Vandermann vises were made in Willimantic CT for the steamfitter industry. At this moment i can put my hands on 6 of these for between 150 to 200 bucks each. I know of a dozen between my family and friends. Who wants one? They are HUGE but they don't swivel and are exposed screw so they are dead to me.
I have a #1 that has been for sale near me for 200 bucks. Its been up a month maybe.

Edit. Just saw your later links and we're looking at the same one! I'll wait for something better

The stainless Morgan show brown stain but there is no rust on the vise.---Cloudy so I had to use flash which made brown spots show on the vise but it looks like fresh sand blasted metal in real life.---Don't know how the flash does that.

The Mercury is in the worst shape of all.---I had to dig it out from under some other vises and its obvious it didn't get any of the heavy oil I put on the top vises.---Yes it's literally a pile of vises.

VA: so you have a brass vise and now a stainless vise too? i'd love to see what a deburring wheel on a Baldor buffer would do to shine those two vises up. you might be able to see them from space.

by the way when you pull a few vises out of the pile do you usually hear the ones at the other end of the chain complaining? :D

thanks again for sharing.

It's a different pile than the ones in chains, Drivesit.---These are inside the shop, piled about 3 feet high.---These are the ones that don't break my back.---If I said I had 4, 200 pounders that I thought were all kin to each other, you would just have to take my word for it.---I ain't dragging them out.
I did see the top of a Morgan 289 Combo down at the bottom of the pile that I haven't seen in three years.---Was good to see that unit again.
I'll show the brass Columbian when I get it done.

VA thanks for posting the pics. The Mercury 4 1/2 is a first, all the other Mercury's I have seen are 4's. That one appears to be based on the standard Morgan which would correspond to a model number swivel base 145 specs jaw width 4 1/2", Max opening 7" Throat depth 3 1/2" Weight 68 pounds.

The Standard and Metro most closely resemble the Morgan Star medium duty vise. That one appears to be based on the standard Morgan which would correspond to a model number 4AS swivel base specs jaw width 4", Max opening 5" Throat depth 3" Weight 45 pounds.

The only other way to get more DNA is dis-assemble the swivel and the vise nut and check for the Morgan numbers like found on Sboecker's vise.

Flipped a coin between working on vises or lineshaft hangers this morning- hangers won- this time. Vises are Hollands 4-1/2 L Offset, Prentiss Bulldog 4", and Pittsburg Automatic Vise & Tool 6" (Still waiting for the Big Brother). Yost 99 is keeping the hangers company.

Cretedog: welcome back and more great vise ****. are you talking about the 695 pound big brother to your Pittsburgh?

i bet you keep your 978 inside the house? did you make the stand for your Yost because that looks like the stand might weigh 500 pounds?

if you do win the flip next weekend on restoring one of those old vise gems you own can you take a lot of pictures and post before and after pictures on the Vise Repair 101 thread.

cheers

New England accent.

Is it funny that an englishman thinks a New ENGLAND accent is funny? (considring all the local accents England has... like Cockney  )

This little Superior vise from the Erie Tool Works came from a monthly industrial tool auction. Missing the swivel lock down handle and multi-layers of old paint to remove but otherwise it seems intact. 4.25 inch jaw width.

FWIW :
In New England it isn't pronounced "Draw", it's pronounced "Drawah". :lol_hitti
In some places around here, his name is pronounced "Noahm".
Everyone thinks that New England[ah]s drop their trailing R's.
They don't, they replace the R with "ah".
And no, I don't do that. I moved around too much as a kid to have a regional accent. :dunno:
I was born in Jersey, for ch**t's sake ! View media item 38281

Nice hollands offset vise. I have looked for an offset vise for a long tim. They are really hard to come up with. Will be coming through ND to get the Lesuer swap meet maybe I will stop in.

Here is a prentiss 57 I picked up a few months ago. Seven inch jaws. It came out of Wire Rope in St Joe Mo. Very nice for a prentiss as they are usually split on the tail section. Not an 8 inch I know but a nice vise.

Here is a Massey 25 vise I got with 10 other strays from a mans hoard. He had others but I ran out of time to get them all. Some are just parts. I have never seen a massey like this. Vey odd base that seems to be a swivel. I need some new jaws. Maybe someone would step forward....

Look at the patent date of 1887. I wonder how old it really is. Does anyone out there have one or seen one like it? It is different than the ones I have seen. Unique bulb on the handle.

My wife is such a great gift giver. Here is another that came to me for Christmas, an Athol 628. When should I tell her what she got me???? Took a long time to find one. There is ony one other I have ever seen. It is 270# without a base. I am going to get a base cast from another 508 swivel that another member has.

I also have a lead on a huge vise that I was told came out of a shipyard. It was described to me as being 2 1/2' off the floor and huge. The man who told me about it said it had to be over 500#. He had owned other 8" vises. Could this be an elusive pittsburg RR vise. Oh what a deal that would be. Anyway I have to wait till after the first of the year to check it out. There has to be one out there somewhere
