Saw this on another page - what happens with you take a tanker desk, a radio, a radio amplifier, and put all of them in a blender? This is the Johnson Radio Co.'s Desk Kilowatt - 1,000 watt output radio built into one wing of a steel tanker-style desk.

That's a killer, I'd love to find a Desk Kilowatt someday that I could afford.

cheers

Well after a lot of searching and a number of "wanted" ads on Craig's List over the last couple of years, this set just dropped into my lap earlier today. I got an email reply from my current C.L. ad, guy said he had a desk he wanted to get rid of. I showed up with my buddy and saw there was also a 'matching' chair. Loaded it up, paid the man and left. $190. Will paint the chair to match later, even included leveling feet and a drawer key. Very happy.

Penetrol is made by Flood. Should be able to get it at Lowes/Home Depot.

It does dry to the touch.

I like it better than clearcoat, but that is just a personal preference. It seems to "look" better.

That said, it can wear off. High use areas will need to be reapplied.

I haven't found Penetrol locally. There is a waterbased version but thats not going to work. I found some on Amazon, can you tell me if this is the product to use? It
s oil based.

Not a tanker desk but a cool vintage industrial type of a desk. The work surface is 42" high so I figured it was an old dispatch type of desk or something like that. it is 28" deep and came with a small hutch/cubby for the top. $75 off craigslist! It is pretty heavy gauge steel and very sturdy. Someday when I have time Ill sand it down and repaint it but I don't mind the "patina"

Wow! This is awesome!

Well the lamp build started.

I need to turn down a bushing to slip the lamp base into and then JB Weld it all together.

Does the black cabinet have a safe inside of it? I have seen a few of them in this thread and they are really cool. Anyone know the make or model so I can try to find one?

I am so stoked by all of these great examples! Does anyone know the style that was used during WWII? My home machine shop sports WWII machinery and I would like to mach the decor.

Thanks,
Guy in Sacramento

I used to have the Steelcase desk, with a return for the computer( er, typewriter), and the chair that was adjustable 8 ways to Sunday. I stupidly gave them away, but you can't move everything you ever had 3500 miles!! Thankfully I do still have grandpas quarter sawn oak roll top, but the Steelcase would have made an excellent garage desk...

I have an all steel desk from my father's house. Besides being a machinist, he was a Ham Radio Operator. We moved once when I was 10 years old and I can still hear the moving men cussing and grunting as they moved it from one house to the other. I only move it horizontally. I'm too old for steps. So how many are using the stuff in the house? I have an odd typewriter desk that I put in the kids room when small as it was lower than a regular desk. I have a bunch of desk side chairs that I use for holiday parties. Also I have a lot of Emeco aluminum chairs. I used them in the kitchen but with the remodel underway, they will be up for sale.

Belly, I just noticed you are missing the skirt guard on that desk. Make sure you are wearing a long dress or pants when company is over ;)

I worked in office furniture sales for a few years, it's still called a modesty panel. It's so you can scratch your balls without offending the lady across the office from you!

Also serves it's purpose when occupants go Commando . . .
. . . could be women in dresses/skirt or men, as in Scottish kilt !! ;)

Cool info guys, makes perfect sense but I had never thought on it before. Now I need a way to spring that tidbit of knowledge on someone at the station!

I have one of these but it just sits. I can't get it in my new house and I don't need a desk in my shop. Anybody converted one into a shop table? Welding bench? It's a miter saw bench now but a poor one since it's not mobile.

I had an extra desk with one side damaged, I took the good side off and used both sets of legs on the one good side, then put a piece of butcher block on top. It was being used as a drill press stand but now I have my tig welder set up on it.

I think I'm going to throw a piece of 1/2 steel on it and call it a welding table.
It's got a few too many dents to go for good money on CL (Ive tried)
But it's built like a tank and I'm not giving it away.
Needs casters though...

Ok desk fans. 10 B street burlington ma. 7 tanker desks available. And they all have modesty panels. Building is open today and tomorrow 9am-3pm only. Back door ask for max. Don't have enough posts to put in classified section. Will post if and when they are gone. Also some shop tables. Some of the desks even have a key. Top are in good shape. Hate to see them go to the crusher. No room at my place. Hope someone can save them.
If this post is against the rules I apologize and mod can remove.

I've been looking at these for a few days now. I am in contact with the seller and getting some more info. He says all the drawers slide very well. I am waiting to hear back with a makers name hopefully. Also waiting to hear if he is flexible in his price because for me this is to much. I am really into this old metal furniture and I will post pics of my treasures in a few days when I can sit down and do it all at once. Anyways, wondering what you folks think of these cabinets? http://minneapolis.craigslist.org/hnp/for/4831818002.html.
