You make do with a pair of vise brakes from Grizzly

Some 1" square tube from HD and voila!

Still need to find a tall enough collar to weld to the top tube and use a set screw to hold in place

Edit: looking at the picture, I just had a light bulb above the head moment:

weld bolts to bottom tube at both ends, drill corresponding holes in top tube, use springs to open brake when lifting press, use nuts on bolts to keep from opening too much. I now have a project for tomorrow!

Had a bear of a time keeping the spear straight while pumping down, and the metal on the backside would curl every time.

How do they work in your vise? I may get a set to use in my vise.

If he's talking about the Grizzly vise brakes, agreed they work better on the thin stuff. I was being silly and went straight to the 1/4" plate that I have lying around......and proceeded to break the HF vise I was using. Bent the screw rod and broke the nut it threaded through.
