I should start a poll about what everyone thinks about guys with 1 or 2 posts ever coming through. We don't let members sell here w/o 100 posts. There must be a reason for that.
Frankly, if I were Bob and not Frank, I'd limit orders to those that have posts — can't say how many.
To those that are committing (and I DID NOT get this from Bob), be ready to pay the full amount including shipping up front. Will you do that?

I'm in pending final details.
As much as I would like to have a plasma, I feel it is in my best interest to back out at this time. FWIW, I hope all that do purchase one has good success from start to finish. Also, thank you for the opportunity that was presented.

You would most likely be SOL. It is very difficult to get large ticket items exchanged when purchasing them in group buys like this from Asia. I had to travel to China for the last company I worked for. I on occasion bought some electronics. Three out of the five lasted a couple of months. I tried to exchange them when I went back with no luck. There is a reason there is so much of a mark up on items like this from China. The seller has to figure in how many units will be defective that they will have to replace.
This is just my opinion with a little personal experience mixed in. Maybe Bob will work out a warranty process in the negotiation for us....?

How else would this be done? Bob fronting the money? I wouldn't expect him to, and I think he'd have to be pretty dumb to do that... I'm kinda of just afraid of getting a dead unit and be SOL, ( not just me but for anyone who gets one of these)I understand the longevity of the warranty is basically nonexistent , but for the money I think its definitely worth a shot..

Really the idea behind the unit is it's a disposable unit. You get your $200 worth out of it and if it last longer than expected you came out ahead. Obviously we all want them to last forever and compare to those more expensive cutters (that are like 3 times the price or more), but that's just not how the cookie usually crumbles on things like this.
To the extent of a warranty; I've been told there is a warranty on the units for 1 year, not sure how that works, still working on figuring that end out.
And yes there will be a deposit, and then a full front fee through paypal (that way everyone is protected). Right now I'm trying to get a good number to negotiate with, then when I'm closer to a final number, I'll do deposits, then when it's order time, take full money.
I'm trying to be as transparent as possible with this so everyone knows how it will work and feel a lot more comfortable taking place in the group buy.

It doesn't take that large of a quantity for the Chinese mfgs to do your own paint color, silk screening, etc. A line of GarageJournal "Value" brand crappy Chinese plasma-cutters/welders would be interesting. Ryan could stock parts & consumables

Word of advice to Aquaticbob-
Based on past experience with selling import plasma cutters- plan on about a 10% failure rate so order extra to replace the ones that failed. Even look into having a stock of replacement parts (circuit boards, torches, etc.) included with the shipment. Don't expect the manufacturer to handle the warranty very well. Roll the cost of the extra 10% into the price of every unit sold. Hold onto those extra ones for one year to serve as replacement units for the ones that failed.

Have a thermal dynamics 12 years old , but will add this one for $200 this unit looks more portable for the times I need to take the equipment on the road ,email me with the total , I would all so like a pile (50 consumables) that should last the life of the machine .

Because their money is as good as everyone elses? If new people buy a few that brings down the price for the rest of us? If they pay like the rest of us I really couldn't care less how many posts they have?
The worst case that I can see is that some of them might stick around. What exactly are you afraid would happen?
I can see the possibility that some of them might express interest and then bail but I also see a ton of interest from the regular crew so those spots and/or machines should take too long to get rid of. I guess they could file a chargeback once they got the machine. If that is a concern I can see having people pay with a paper payment like a money order if they have a low post count but I wouldn't completely exclude them.
Seems to me they are taking a bigger risk than we are since they are giving out their money to someone they don't know.

I agree, if they show up and bring money then what's the problem? Remember, the more units we buy, the lower the cost per unit. It's not like they are showing up for a potluck and not bringing a side dish!

Are members here telling friends and family about the deal and that's what's causing the new sign-ups?
Is there word of our group buy on another forum and that's bringing people over who want to get in on the deal.
As far as flaking-out, I'm sure we'll have plenty of our own long term members who balk when it's time to write the check.

Some of these new posters might already have been lurkers on here. We have lots of those. They hang in the shadows and once in a great while something inspires them to post or register and then post.
I'm on the fence about throwing my hat in the ring on this buy. If the machine fails, I'd hate to be out of my money assuming overseas warranty claims are troublesome at best.

I'm choosing to include everyone, and I can see why some people might disagree with that. Obviously a low post count member might bail out simply because they don't check back on the forum again. Money is money though, and with everyone prepaying I'm not too worried. There will also be a deposit when I get a bit further along and am assured on a few things. Progress has been slow this week from the new year.
In terms of worrying about a chargeback, I'm really not worried. I'm pretty confident on fighting them, and I've had lots of success with them on PayPal before.

I agree. I lurked around a while before I registered as well.
I would take the deposits in like 3 phases. It would give time to see if they file a charge back if done through paypal and also like a layaway for some that may not be able to dish it out at once or easier to hide the transaction from the wife this way...
Again, much appreciation for taking the lead on this.
