Looks fine to me but I do not have any experience with KD, but if you can, get a pittsburg pro composite since a ton of people got em and love em.

Why not? With out touching it i can't give you accurate advice. But from the looks of it. It appears to be a quality piece.

if i needed one for 12 bucks shipped i would.
IF you like knurled handles. i do.
the head looks like a 90s c-man
the handle looks like a 80s or 90s new brittain.

i dont have any K-D ratchets, but i have a bunch of K-D made in USA wrenches and they're good stuff

I'm guessing the head has the same guts as the last American made craftsmans.

Certainly cheap enough, but I'd spring for something with more teeth. A gearwrench wouldn't be too much more money if you aren't set on USA made.

Only took one post for a HF troll to attack. Is that a new record?

That looks alot like the teardrop head NAPA ratchet I got on a warranty trade-in. Quick release button, head and handle look identical. Heck, KD probably is the manufacturer of my NAPA ratchet.

And lol at the guy recomending HF ratchets. The guy who started this thread was asking if he should buy THIS ratchet, not your opinion of HF ratchets.

First off how am I a troll? Second how am I attacking anyone? Third, why am I the bad guy for suggesting a genuinely good ratchet in a similar price range as the one op posted with positive feedback from most people who own them?

http://www.harborfreight.com/3-8-eighth-inch-heavy-duty-composite-ratchet-66313.html

http://www.harborfreight.com/1-2-half-inch-heavy-duty-composite-ratchet-66314.html

If that ain't enough here are the reviews on amazon for the tekton composite which is the same as the HF ones

http://www.amazon.com/TEKTON-1458-Q...sr_1_3_cm_cr_acr_txt?ie=UTF8&showViewpoints=1

http://www.amazon.com/TEKTON-1457-Q...sr_1_1_cm_cr_acr_txt?ie=UTF8&showViewpoints=1

http://www.amazon.com/TEKTON-1456-Q...sr_1_2_cm_cr_acr_txt?ie=UTF8&showViewpoints=1

I own a 1/4in and it is one of the best ratchets I got.
You are entitled to your own opinion but you are an ****** for insulting me for trying to give helpful suggestions to the OP

Isn't K-D the parent company of Gearwrench?

Now the question is, does an old K-D ratchet share any DNA with the current Gearwrench offerings, I don't know. But I bet it is a quality tool, might be coarse tooth and lots of backdrag but even if so it ought to be strong.

How about.... No you shouldn't buy this ratchet because there are better alternatives available for the same price, that don't use crapsman guts?

Looks nearly identical to some of the Armstrong offerings. For that price you should do well.

For the price id give it a go if you need a sturdy 1/2 inch ratchet. KD is a quality company with a solid reputation. Sure it's not fine tooth but how often are you really trying to get a 1/4" ratchet into super tight spaces anyway? Fine tooth is more imparting for 1/4" and even 3/8" stuff.

Try reading the post above yours. You need to stop taking posts off topic with your constant HF references. We seem to have a new group of members that think their love for HF out weighs other members attempt for unbiased opinion.

The op didn't ask for suggestions on other ratchets. His post was pretty clear. Why not just stay on topic or just not post at all?.

Made by Danaher, the standard 36 tooth ratcheting mechanism often found in USA made Allen, Craftsman, Kobalt, Masterforce, Napa and others from the recent era. Seller likely obtained them from O'Rielly auto parts when they closed out K-D some months ago. It's cheap enough and directional switch appears to be steel.

Is the mechanism used for both tear drop and round head designs? I have an allen round head that is a 36 tooth that is a kd and tends to slip semi regularly, might be a one off issue but who knows.

Pretty much what I was going to say. The ratchet in question would probably benefit from a clean/relube since it's NOS.

And this is the probable answer to your ratchet issues, I've made dozens of "broken" ratchets work like new by simply cleaning and lubing the guts.

i have to admit, the most amazing thing about this thread to me, is it was actually started over a ratchet that costs $11.95:willy_nil:bowdown:

It is not that old, only a couple years since I bought the set in about 2010-11. Never used it too much and I have cleaned it out before but not much was in there to clean. I got some lube from an sk ratchet I rebuilt, I will give it a try on that allen

No, apples and oranges, two different mechanisms.

I believe the round head you're referring to doesn't have a quick release and has like three little raised spots on the direction switch. Although it may benefit from some thin oil and adjustment, it's not the greatest ratchet out there.

The ratchet linked in the first post is a solid no frills ratchet that will get the job done. Warranty support would be available from Armstrong as this ratchet is now produced under the Armstrong name since KD tools is no more.

Yep that pretty much sums up the one I got, I think I will try to oil it up to see if that helps. I don't use it anymore since I got a lot more different ratchets since I bought that set, the allen sockets are pretty good though.

It's short for a 1/2 drive at 10 3/8. My armstrong locking 3/8 flex head is 11.6 inches long. I rarely use my craftsman premuim 1/2 drive and Gedore 36 tooth 1/2 drive cause both are only 11 and something inches long ;so I just use my armstrong 3/8. When doing suspension work on my dakota R/t I found my self using my gearwrench fkex head 1/2 drive that's about 17.5 inches long. I also have a 16 inch long 36 tooth proto.

I think we should go one step further and set a $100 limit. Anything that costs less and you're not allowed to be assholes to each other.

Not really. Many fixed head 1/2" drive ratchets are 9-1/4" or 9-1/2". A flex head is commonly longer.

The man knows whereof he speaks...:bowdown:

Behold the 1/4", 3/8", 3/8"stubby, and 1/2" drive flex head Gearwrench set Santa brought me...:D

GW is what's left of KD....

At the price asked, the OP can't go wrong...buy the damn ratchet!!!:3gears:

Or, save up a little less than a hundred, and buy this set...;)

If you haven't yet, you might want to grab one soon, as there's one less available now....

Got the 3/8" version, has the metal selector (vs the crappy plastic lever on the Craftsman version). IMHO it's a decent ratchet for that amount of money, and still USA made. A lube job will be beneficial as well
