This site has been a huge eye opener for me in the last few years. I came here first because of the repository of knowledge of all tools new and antique. Good reviews and comparisons of new tools and history lessons on forgotten makes. I joined because I really like tools and using them but a new family keeps me out of the shop and free of spare time and this was a great outlet.
What I didn't realize was that tools could be so polarizing. I saw HF tools mentioned here and my last experience with their stores and tools was fifteen years or so ago and I remember the atrocious quality, poor packaging, and generally beneath cheap feel of their stores. I figured to each their own. Buy cheap and embrace it. Not my cup of tea.
I went into one of their stores in the past year and was impressed with how they've improved their appearance. The store was more or less professional and the selection was impressive. Really good, I thought. I even walked around the store with a 1/4 roto head ratchet for a while, almost buying it. But it struck me that for about twice the advertised price(four times the sale price) I could buy a new GearWrench (which I did) or a used Snap On. The feel of the GW is worlds better than the Pittsburgh so no regrets here.
I also hear glowing reviews of the service carts and picked up a five drawer cart. It sat in my shop for a few minutes before I decided it was not for me. I've owned Mac, Blue Point, and Craftsman carts and looked very closely at the four drawer Homak carts. It would work in a pinch and if I was forced to work out of one I would but trading up would be priority one. For the record, the afore mentioned carts were purchased used for $150~250.
I briefly wanted to be a HF supporter. I would buy their sockets if I had no access to used SK or Craftsman. I could see owning some of their other tools and maybe one of the tool boxes if I was starting over from scratch. Other than that, when I need a tool for occasional use, I find a used one on CL or at a local pawn shop.
I'm not sure if this is a rant or just a ramble. I don't get much time to browse the GJ right now and I guess my radar has just been picking up more HF static than normal. By all means, talk tools, but for the love of Pete, please have more to offer than HF, HF, HF.
