Thanks guys. :)

I can't believe this thread is still going. I guess it shows there's a lot of interest in 2 car garages.

Nice garage,,,,,,,,I would like to ask you what you used to fill the fine expansion gaps with before you did the epoxy application to the floor.

First off:

Secondly: Way to rep Minnesota.

Thirdly and legitimately: How did you build the overheads? I am thinking about doing something similar in my space. I have seen this concept in multiple garages and must admit its functionality/uniqueness intrigues me.

I was initially inspired by your design XcYz. Then I saw another variation and I've kind of adapted it again.

Jkaz, read his thread. It's all there.

One of the best garages on GJ, ever.

Kudos to you. I know a lot of folks view your garage as 'the ultimate'.

I am one of them:thumbup:

Scott, can't say anything better than what has said already about your setup!! I first saw your thread when I was on deployment in Djibouti, Africa back in Mar, and was wanting to convert my 0.75 car garage into some thing like what you have. Decided to buy a new house instead and now have a 2 car garage! FINALLY!! Although I don't have a '69, but I do have a red '89 IROC, all original (except paint), 94K miles, in almost mint condition that is wanting a heart transplant, much like Cully's friend. Might be PMing you for tips & tricks. I'm "breaking ground," well just starting converting the garage this weekend. Just want to thank you for the inspiration and sharing with all of us! It's going to be VERY hard to go with a different color scheme! Probably go with a darker gray.

Thanks for the kind words, and I'm glad you found some of my 2 car garage ideas to useful and/or inspirational. :)

And as long as I'm posting, I might as well add a new pic. I recently took this setup shot of my car in the shop late at night using a tripod, remote shutter release, a 40 watt light bulb in a box, and a shutter speed of 20 seconds. With the shutter open, I walked down the side of the car holding the directional light - your basic painting with light - but I should have put the window up! Doh! lol For the photography people, it was ISO200, SS20", at 13mm on DX.

Thanks guys.

The garage is just a basic 24x24, the sidewalls are 9'4". I guess I don't have too many pics of the outside of the garage online, but I have plenty saved on my computer at home. I'll have to dig them up and post some.

Thanks! The soffit enclosure just presented itself. Before I gutted the garage, I had some simple shelves around the perimeter (I built the same type shelves in my attached garage, too) and I had always planned on putting recessed lights under them. One day when I was in the home improvement store, I spotted tracks and rollers for closet doors. It gave me the idea to use them to enclose the soffit. I used 5/8" MDF to make the doors and the trim holds the bottom of the doors in place. The tracks are mounted to 1x4's so I had a nailer for mounting the upper trim to cover the tracks. Also, if you notice, the doors aren't perfectly vertical. That was my plan so that the bottom of the doors have a just slight amount of pressure against the bottom trim and can't swing in and out. It's VERY simple and cheap solution. The best part is that I can open and close the doors with a single finger as it rolls so smooth easy.

I've been having hard time with finding 5/8" size door tracks that you've mentioned in your post. Most of the bypass kits are manufactured for 3/4" door thickness and above. Since you are using 5/8x20"xL type doors, I was wondering if you could shine some light on track product manufacturer, model etc... to help narrow down my search?

Thanks in advance!
Mike

One of the very best, cleanest, 2-car garages ever!! I used it as my screen saver for quit a while as inspiration for my own 2-car garage. Alas I couldn't even come close!!

As well your build! I've done a few show-cars/trucks, but your Camaro is in a class of it's own - you are obviously very talented and determined!

Thanks for posting it up for us and keeping it updated - love it!:thumbup:

PS - I'm also a little pissed at you for turning me on to Lateral-g.net......another great site to spend my time on!!!! AAARRRGGG! ;)

Like others have said, your garage is great. It will certainly be one I think about when sorting out my new garage.

I love this picture. You said you walked down the side of the car - in front of or behind the camera? I'm still learning how to use my DSLR, but once I get moved in, I will have to try this.

Sorry for the delay, I've been crazy busy with family and work.

As for how to do this, if you keep the aperture very small (large number, like f/14 ~ f/16), you and your movements won't show as long as you don't stop or wear really bright clothing. I kept the light source mostly in front of me and push the light. You can't block the reflections between the car and the camera as that's what you're really capturing - the reflection of the light source.

I don't recall, it was the cheap stuff at Menard's. lol It very well could have been for 3/4, but I made it work for 5/8. Just because they tell you 3/4 doesn't mean you can't be creative and repurpose their product. :)

lol, awesome! :D

Thanks for the compliments, I really appreciate it. I have a very hard time leaving anything alone. I have to be constantly working on some project. Now that the car and shop are done, I've been really working on my photography. :willy_nil

Scott,

I have been following this thread for a while and I must say how impressed I am by your work, vision, and your Camaro!! Love it!!

So, having said that, I am not ashamed to say you have inspired me to completely reno my own garage. I am also not ashamed to say that I will copy the soffits, the color scheme, and the floor (I originally wasn't going to do the floor as I bought and applied the cheap epoxy you get from the big box home improvement store and due to the cost of the new floor paint as well). I also like how you did the cabinets and the counter tops so I am copying that as well. About the only thing I am not copying is the sweet Camaro since that would end up with me in divorce court...lol! Besides, I want a nice sport-touring bike to go alongside my M109!! Can't have everything!! lol :dunno:

So, I think I will be reaching out to you for some advice, lessons learned, and other suggestions you may have (and from anyone else who cares to chime in as well...). That is, if you would be so inclined as to offer up any more than what you so aptly have in this thread. ;-)

I cannot over-state what effect your hard work did to motivate me...as you can see from the below "BEFORE" photo, my garage and my personal garage tidiness habits needed help!! Don't hold the 150 bales of hay against me though or it would have looked far less messy...but we have 2 horses and the wife bought some emergency hay at a fantastic price before the drought prices drove hay through the roof and saved us a bunch of $$ (4-500 dollars minimum!!) so I can't really complain.

BEFORE:

So, for some advice...

Do you feel the floor is holding up well over these few years now that it has been down and had traffic, etc.?

How are the counter tops holding up?

I am seriously considering these lights for the soffits instead of the regular incandescent...I love LED lighting and these are fairly equivalent in price...thoughts?

http://www.ebay.com/itm/5W-5x1W-LED...=&orig_cvip=true&rt=nc&_trksid=p2047675.l2557

What other lessons learned do you have for those of us starting out with our own reno adventures?

I will start my own thread so as to not hijack this one when I actually get started, which for the most part will be after Christmas (I promised my wife I wouldn't impact the holiday budget...but I do already have my garage heater!! Picked it up for $250 and it works like a champ...will be painting it black to match the decor though...) As you can see, I bought it from a lady who still had it in her garage so I was able to see it in action...but it is now in mine on the floor.

20121001_183858.jpg

Thanks for sharing...and letting me copy...you know what they say...copying is the highest form of flattery!

I see that you did power tour in 09 I did too. long hauled.. In '10 could only do 3 stops due to other obligations. I had the only car like mine on the tour though it is very plain compared to many that went. mine is a 78 Plymouth Fury Sport 2 door. ALL original not redone in the least... it's only a 318-2 barrel car...

Awesome Garage & Camaro! I spend a lot of time in my garage. I've looked at quite a few pictures over the last couple of months. I really like your set up. The color combinations, attention to detail are top notch! Thanks!

Can you share more about your lighting ?
I'm stuck on whether to do all led high hats or fluorescent

I have 4 8' fluorescent fixtures now but I want them to look more finished
Your lighting looks very bright
Can you share the style
