I know others have had different experience, but I have yet to see a good deal on anything SnapOn at a pawn shop. In fact, I normally see for close to or more than new cost. Wish I could find some of the deals like I see on here!

I buy Snap on and other high end tools from pawn shops all the time. Including cordless tools and torque wrenches. Have only ran into one air tool that had a problem and returned it for refund. Have had great luck over the years.

The pawnshops around here want new price for stuff. Seen a Mac torque wrench for 250. I think I would buy a new one

I purchased some Milwaukee tools from the pawn shop. One was brand new (a 1/2" corded drill/hole shooter). the Second was a M12 small screw driver. Both were very nice. He had a price on both about 20% below retail.

One thing to always remember. .. Negotiate with them. If the item is new stock, they typically won't budge. Some advertise on EBay and won't budge unless in either / both cases it has been around a while. Then, they will dicker..

I have never found reasonable prices on quality tools at a pawn shop. When they start at retail prices, it doesn't even make sense to dicker. Glad you found a good deal.

You really have to know what the new price is. When I lived in San Antonio, I would make the rounds of about 10 or 12 pawnshops, and the prices would range from MORE than new, down to about 1/3 of new.

You would find brand new socket sets, wrench sets, and screwdriver sets, still in the wrapper, that the person had bought from the dealer, pawned them for a few bucks, and stiffed the dealer.

This is where I learned that Snap on could make 1/2", 9/16", and 3/4" wrenches faster than I could buy them.

most of the truck brand SETS of tools are priced less than new, but not a "smokin' " deal by any means.

single tools, can typically be had at a reasonable price, ($1 -$10)

i find a LOT of SK & industrial branded wrenches and sockets mixed in the $1 bins.
i usually buy them by the handfull when i see them, and have a few bucks in cash on me.

i typically dont even bother to look at sets of sockets or wrenches anymore, i have more than enough. i look for vintage test eq, thats still in good condition, or some slightly older stuff that i can put to use.

When my son graduated basic training from the Air Force I hit about 35 or 40 pawn shops in San Antonio in 2 days while I was down there. Bought a 3/8" Snap on electronic torque wrench, 1 Snap on and 2 Mac combination wrench sets and 2 sets of Snap on screwdrivers. All used, but in excellent shape. Lots of pawn shops in that area. Most had junk and were over priced, but 3 of them had good tools at great prices and actually wanted to sell them. Only one they wouldn't take my offer on was the torque wrench, but it was only 110.00 so I bought it anyway. Put that and all 3 wrench sets in my toolbox when I got back home.

There's a thread here on GJ that teaches you how to decode pawnshop items with the price ticket on it.

Learn that and you have dickering power.

One pawn shop locally is selective about what tool boxes he takes in and won't take in junky boxes full of imports. Then he refused to sell pieces but wants to sell the whole box, says he can keep up with what he has in it better.

Otherwise, they seem to take in mostly junky boxes with a lot of import tools. At some point they empty the un redeemed pawn boxes into a bin and try to sell the empty box. I have bought boxes this way, like for example I got a large plastic box to keep my wife's garden tools in one the back porch to protect it from the rain. Got it for a buck or two. The owner agreed that it was worth while to him to free up floor space. In that case we agreed that I would keep the junk and trash it on my own and put the items that would possibly sell in his bin. Got 2 or three Craftsman Crown boxes that way.

The tools which are mostly imports tend to pile up in bins. Some jewels can be found but you have to hunt for them. The shops are anxious to sell the junk to free up space and are easy to deal with. They try to get $1.00 for USA sockets and smaller wrenches. I've picked up import wrenches for welding projects for practically nothing.

Yesterday, nothing is what I paid for two 6 inch Nicholson files. That shop has a nice Matco rolling work box with top and most of the 3 or 4 drawers full of socket and wrenches. At first there was some good stuff in there, but now it's almost all imports, shiny imports, but imports nevertheless. Harbor Freight tools are starting to show up in pawn shops.

At another pawn shop I found a saw set like I described in the thread about sharpening saws. I entertained mys self by asking the owner if he knew what it was; he didn't. There was a weathered box and roller cabinet that was once high quality the saw set was in and I asked him about them, he didn't remember taking them in and commented that he never looked in the boxes he took in, which tells me he is only paying pennies on the dollar for the tools. We looked at the box and he found some wire nuts he needed and I got a 8 inch and a 5 inch c clamp, rust but US made and in good shape for $5, which was an ok deal but not a you **** one.

There is a took jockey at a flea market that I ran across at that pawn shop. Obviously his deal is to buy boxes of tools that are good quality and split them up for sale. He went behind the counter and obviously the shop saves the best boxes for him and other tool jockeys. That particular time he bemoaned the fact that he hadn't found anything good.

It has been said by the pawn shops that time are hard and people have trouble buying tools to work with, therefore they don't have many good tools to pawn. Some guys in the building trades will pawn tools and when they get a job lined up they will come get their tools.

If someone brings in a set of SO tools in a good tool box, the pawn shop will loan more on them, but often the shop will try to but the set outright to resell. Fairly often there will be a locked box of tools that they will show to serious purchasers. There is very little of this effort to get new price for used tools in this area.

Lots of times I see stuff in pawnshops and the seller doesn't even know what it is, let alone how to price it. I used to look in pawnshops and pore through flea market piles but I don't do that much anymore. Nowadays I'm usually too worried about getting rid of stuff to spend much energy trying to get more. :)

I stop at pawn shops once and a while. I have never found a deal. Their prices are almost full retail.

In the 80's we were buying Snap-On, Matco, Mac, Williams, Proto, and Cornwell from a chain of pawnshops locally for $1.00 a pound. They'd load it all up on a big scale, didn't matter what it was, buck a pound.

I probably bought $10,000 worth of the stuff for pennies on the dollar.
