June: i have a Vanderman vise that almost looks identical to that Athol. i read the slots in the back were made to make slight bends in in steam piping.

I see a couple of them listed....pricey too. Interesting vise. Thanks for the info fellas.

firemanast, nice stand, This one is my vise I take to work since most machine shops do not have a good vise setup for welding. Nice job on yours, I can help you with the decal if you want one, PM me.
I have a good friend that is our town welder and he has great ideas on vise mounts. Steve is very ingenious on his vises holdings. The fourth vise is mounted on a stand and has a 1-1/2 threaded rod for adjusting heights. He has three set up like this. These vises are all used everyday.

About 8 months ago i sold a customer in the Napa region of CA a couple of vises. He is now a full fledged addict. So today he sends me this pic. He bought from an estate this Wilton C3 on its stand, a 3" and 2.5" bullet (both swivels) for $200. I am sooo jealous. Oh yeah, i forgot, in the background is his new $100 welding table from the same estate sale

It must have been a Woman running the sale at those prices. There are certain estate sale companies here in Atlanta that price the tools cheap and others are sky high to start and drop 25% each day. First day is no price reduction, the last day is "willing to deal day" if there is anything left. I would guess this is true in most locations.

My paltry addition to the vise thread. I've been doing good with tools but the vise supply has been a trickle at best

This little stanley may not be a monster but it sure was well taken care of. It even has some machined aluminum jaw protectors fanned up by the previous owner.

Nothing wrong with those little clamp on vises. I used my Stanley 1207 in the basket of an aerial lift years ago while doing work in a plant ceiling. It was a big help.

ALL: Anybody know the specifics of this Rock Island #97? i'm thinking 8 inch and 250 pounds, but not sure yet and needing a little help. Also any of you see any issues with this vise other than rust?

B100: thanks for your wisdom.:thumbup:

I knew there is a bigger one or two Rock Island vises than my 577's, but Dayid's doesn't have any info on them. pictures always make a big vise look bigger without something in the picture to relate to size like a ruler, pop can or dollar bill. i'll keep hunting for big game and maybe i will have better luck finding one or two 8 or 9's.

Hello Vise Friends,

I went on a pick this afternoon for some machining equipment. The shop I went to had a Holland #46, swivel base/pivot jaw vise. It's rough and the owner didn't want to sell it. But I gave him some information about it. He also let me take pictures of it for the pleasure of our group.

Enjoy...I hope I can get one like this.

I have 2 Record vises. An old #2 that I saved from an old rotten barn. It was my great uncles and the barn fell down a couple years later.

And I have a fairly new Irwin/Record #5. Snagged a bigger bench so had to get a bigger vise.

I also have an old Rae #104 in my other shop. It looked like a rusted boat anchor when a client gave it to me. Seized solid.

What no posts since 8 AM.. whats up with that?

Met the Jakester on Saturday and had lunch:beer:. You're a nice guy Jake. We went and picked over a used tool store. I got a Porter Cable belt sander in need of some TLC for $15, good deal.

Also I'm picking up a Prentiss #4 on Thursday. Good original condition. fixed base, swivel jaw. 5.25" jaws 98 lbs...$80:drool:

I got this 4" Holland for $60.00. Never had one before. Got to pick it up this week. Guy who had this wanted to sell me these small vises but no interest on my part.

Ran into a guy who has two boxes of Parker parts... small vise Parker parts including 8 NOS swivels bases for Parker #18-20s. :willy_nil That got my attention plus LOTS OF EXTRAS. We agreed to $100 for both boxes. I'll inventory then let you guys know what I actually got on Sunday.

Traveling to NJ then PA on Monday & Tuesday. Going to meet the mysterious and elusive NJ Marty of Reed 3C fame on the way down. I'm thinking of punching him out when I see him for outbidding me on the Reed 3C, but I'll probably just let him buy me a coffee.:lol_hitti

Working CL while in PA HARD to see if there are any gems everyone else has missed. I'm sure I'll get something to bring home.

I'll tell you it is hard to plan my vise 'hobby' around my real job!:p

I have a York 100 vise coming my way, the one that predates the bullet. It doesn't have the York stamping on it however; Could this be a knock-off? Or maybe a private label? Ill post pics when I get it.

Hello Vise Friends,

I guess that I've ventured into new territory. I picked up a Cole No.11 vise. This is a blacksmith's vise that you can add a post at the bottom, or with the post, you can use it as a large wrench. You can also buy a drilling accessory to mount in the jaws. I've always stayed away from post or blacksmith vises because I knew nothing about them However, what sold me was that the vise can be swiveled 360 degrees at the base, it looks like it was seldom used, and it's made in the USA. It weighs around 63#.

Mark I've got had one of these for a bit and while it looks bit like a blacksmith vise I don't think you could use it the same way. The build construction is much lighter. I've bought and sold a few of these and remarkably they've always sold for $60 BUCKS.

I think every shop should have one of these they are rather remarkable.

Record No.6 at work in brutal shape. Was a welder vise so it was **** kicked for at least 15 years on a daily basis. Tore it down, sandblasted, fresh paint and put it back together with some new jaws and I'll set it up for the pipefitters to use until one of the jaw faces breaks off.

My findings on the 114 1/2 x Athol.

First. Here is the 426 1/2 Athol for comparison.
He must weight around 60 lbs. Lifting this thing takes effort. Ummmph
426_1_2_1.jpg

The 114 1/2 X does not have removable jaws. It is lighter, and noticeably smaller. No idea why the 'X'.
426_1_2_3.jpg

The handle is smaller, and the lead thread was the perfect annoying size. I could not find pvc that would fit to remove the spring.
426_1_2_4.jpg

Jaw lengths are the same, but not the same amount of mass.
426_1_2_2.jpg

The 100 series of Athol are smaller and lighter.

Xxaler, Excellent! Just what I wanted to see! My Paramo #6 has been beat to hell just like your Record. Nice to have a preview of what my Paramo could look like after some rejuvenating. Where did you find the new jaws? Are they Irwin/Record replacements? A few pics of my project in different phases:

It's pretty neat. I downloaded & printed a manual for it. I'll make a handel for it to use the "large pipe wrench" feature. I'm concidering making a detachable trailer hitch stand and using it on my truck.

Mark: here's one stand i saw and saved for those Cole vises a while back that might work for a trailer hitch mounting with a little modifying. also here's the drill attachment that i saw with a Cole vise holding it ready to use.

I've passed on a lot of these in the past just like the blacksmith ones, but one day I'm sure i'll have one or two of both if the right ones cross my path in the wild.

**: did you paint that vise gold so the guys know which one to break if they are using the vise for a tough job? how did you make the jaws? your shop has some really nice steel tables so may i ask what your business is?

Hey Drives,

It would be cool to have that drill attachment as conversation piece, but I'll stick to a electric of air drill. :D

Looks like I can weld some pieces of square tube stock together and attach the cole vise at the base so I can have the swivel vise benefit. Since it's kind of tall, it may mount onto a standard hitch insert.

I might have something, are these Wards models very rare? By the looks they were built by Wilton, at least their jaws seem to fit.
