Perfect time to buy a SO box?

So I'm in the market for a Green KRL722 or a 1022 if the price is right but anyways, my SO dealer went to a tool convention over the weekend and quoted me a price of $4,400 OTD for a base 1022 and $5,000 with SS top and some speaker setup. No 722 though.

A little more than what I want to spend unfortunately. When is the best time to get a deal on a box? Is it at these tool conventions? Special rebates?

He currently has a blue krl722 new on his truck for about $3,400 OTD but not the color I want.
I have already checked Craigslist and they're not much cheaper there. So I prefer to buy new.

have you checked out strictlytoolboxes.com? they've got some comparable boxes at half the cost and EXCELLENT customer service. if you're set on S/O ask youre dealer if he's got any used boxes for sale.

A new vs "like new used box" is not a big difference. Especially if we are talking hundreds or flirting with thousands of dollars. But get the color that you WANT, do not settle with something that you dont love! Get it right the first time, the poor man pays twice trying to save a nickel.

good grief man - these and similar SO boxes are on craigslist by the boatload in like new condition, and if you are a good negotiator you can get one for $1500 cash! or less!

what someone paid originally really has nothing to do with what something is worth! (remember that for your negotiating)

find a seller who has bills to pay - pretend you are the pawn shop!

For 1 grand less I could deal with blue over green and learn to love it. Keep the green in our wallet for the win. But your money, your choice.

So you would drive a pink or whatever color you really feel is terrible for you CAR around if you could pay $1000 less. Not me

Sometimes you have to spend a little more to get what you want you will be happier and won't care about the little extra $$ down the road.

For one grand, blue vs green would not bug me. I also just bought a blue tool box. Green car vs pink is a different scenario. 25% savings is not a little extra, but like I said, his money his choice.

Take it from me...I bought a KRL722 new but for PEANUTS off the truck in the fall of 2013...the sole reason I bought it was it was cheap...Very Cheap and new. Been almost 2 years since and I still havent moved tools into it. It really wasnt the box I wanted, not the color I wanted, etc. Just cant bring myself to moving into it.
Its for home use...I keep it under its cover and I keep hoping a deal comes my way on a box model and color I really want.

My 2 cents:
The "perfect time" to buy is when the SO man (or anyone, for that matter) gives you the best price on exactly what you want......Or,for some, it's when you can buy something that may not be exactly what you want, but at a price you can't resist.....You decide for yourself.

I held off buying boxes a few times in the situation where the SO man had something I wanted, but not a price I liked. Eventually he got down to a better price and we had a deal. Simple as that.

Over the years, working and being busy with family and such made me not worry too much about spending my off time chasing down a box that was cheaper. Time is money, as they say, and that works both ways. IMO, 55% off of list price is not a "bad deal" when it's dropped in your shop with no hassle....especially if it's a box you like....

Bingo, If you have a good relationship with your driver tell him what you want and what you want to pay. It might take some time but things can work out, took me a year to get the deal I wanted but I got the box I wanted at the price I wanted to pay, I could sell the box and make money

Honestly...when speaking with friends who are pro mechanics and reading here. I think 99% of the boxes which are purchased at smoking deals, the deal comes to YOU, not you go out searching. I bought 2 KRL's at stupid cheap money, both times the deal came to me. I know my BIL has had the same happen to him...SO Guy knows he's got a stiffy for the Flat Black boxes..got offered a smokin deal on one just before Christmas.
My SO Guy knows what it will take to get me into a KRSC100, and My MAC guy knows which box I'd like to trade my 722 in for and where I want to be $$.

Oh to answer your original question... to me, the PERFECT Time to buy a box is right after or before the annual shows. MAC's is usally this time of year, SO is middle of Summer. MAC Guy usually has steep discounts, and SO typically has great promo's as well. Both the KRL's I've purchased have been "SFC" Freebie Boxes...SFC 2014 didnt have anything that interested me...

BUT buying a new box is like buying a car...deals & promotions come and go, various rebates and incentives..etc.. only way to navigate it is to have a relationship.

I was gonna buy a 1022 late December and didn't, last I talked to dealer that deal was over but thought some other promotion was coming, cant remember if he said if it was end of the week or end of month. Hope I can get that kind of a price, since I just sold mine, Saturday.

I was thinking about a larger box last summer. Called the Snap-on man about pricing a classic 78 in red. Long story short, he had a 1023 on the truck that he needed gone. I got a excellent deal (I thought). It's candy apple red rather than regular red but I like it and it's more box than I will ever need. :)

When is the best time.....when you have the CASH
Start saving your money, along the way you may find a steal on a used one in to color you want.
Also, tell the snap on dealer how much you want one. Let him start working a deal for you.
Update him one in a while on how much money you have saved. He will let you know when the deal finally happens and he can put you in one for the right price

so guy, what you wanted

My Guy knew I was wanting one, and really prefering a Macsimizer then one afternoon I get the same call as you:
SO Guy - You still looking for a box?
Me - Depends what you got...
SO Guy - Black/Titanium Trim 722, with cover, new. Never been on the truck, got it in my storage unit...was hanging onto it for a rainy day.
Me - How Much
SO Guy - x,*** cash, need it today/tomorrow.
Me - I'll take it if you deliver it to the hosue, when I can I go see you & the box

That same night the box was in my shop.

Also, tell the snap on dealer how much you want one. Let him start working a deal for you.

Slippery slope...dont tell him that your TOO ***** for one. Then he doesnt have TOO much incentive. My SO Guy knew full well I wanted a MB1860, or really any Macsimizer, not a KRL. To this day I would prefer the 1860. But he also knew I could pay and I was wanting a box and that $$ trumped drawer config in my world.. :)

The "Perfect Time" to buy SO box . . . is next 6 wks in major market like the OP in Los Angeles
. . . . .
. . . . . . . . however, it needs to be USED !!! ;)

There will be many SO box owners in financial stress from holiday bills coming due. They get behind and make rash judgment to sell SO box in hurry.

That is OPPORTUNITY that OP can take advantage IF he has cash in hand.

Thus, be a hound on CL every day / all day long looking for toolbox from distressed seller.
The prior Snappy box owner's loss will be OP's gain !! ;)

This is all helpful information. I am picky on that color so I'll wait for the right deal to come along. I will keep scouring Craigslist for some but there are some ridiculous listings wanting as much as brand new.

things I have learned about SO toolboxes since I have been reading on Garage Journal:

● some SO toolboxes didn't come with ball bearing slides

● some SO toolboxes use very flimsy thin gauge metal in the sides that can distort when removing the slides

the more I read, the more I am thinking that will I stick with my HF 44's - they may not be the best made, but they are cheap, work well, have ball bearing slides and fairly heavy construction, and hold the tools of a large shop JUST FINE! ;)

The damage can be completely avoided if you know EXACTLY what to do. Becoming an expert after the fact is not the best way to learn, but at least you'll never forget the procedure that way.

You need to watch out on east coast, there were a bunch of boxes damaged in the Sandy storm. And Snap on will not warranty the slides and any box that was submerged has damaged slides from salt water. I had looked at a couple of great priced boxes and they had storm damage.
My dealer just about warranties anything for me but the reject that type of damage at claims.

i dont know promotions or sales on last years models for tool truck brand boxes.
but i can say that on most big ticket items(over a grand) like motorcycles and stuff the best time to look/buy is mid April/tax time.
i dont want to appear a vulture or douchebag, but some losers live outside their means and it comes back to bite them and they need quick cash to pay uncle sam.
i wont purposely rip anyone off or kick a guy when he's down, but sometimes a deals a deal.

I'd go $1000 cash.

You've reverted back to peyote and smoking cow dung again, haven't you Cowboy !! :D

In distress situation, the OP might in fact get that used box for not much more money than small new 2 bay box off the Snappy truck.

Can these boxes be painted by a professional? I'm a SO green guy myself but there's plenty more deals to be had on red boxes, the most common color. And some blue and black ones too.

But anyway to add my 2 cents. I agree with the deal coming to you. Some guys get in over their heads with financing. I have seen some deals on my local CL.

Thanks

The best deals usually come after SFC in August. Make sure your dealer knows what you want before he goes.

Oh ok. My dealer knows the exact models and color I want so he'll be on the look out if he wants my money.

They just had a regional meeting this past saturday.
We had talked about the box I wanted since Sept, the special deal he got at national meeting in August was not what I wanted. That is still sitting in his garage. I got a pretty good deal today.
Now I just need to get ride of a 48" Husky tool bench and a Hoyte bottom rolling unit.
