My father-in-law gave me this yesterday. He has never used it, but he said it was hooked up and working when he bought it. Funny thing is, I didn't even know he had it. The only thing I saw wrong with it is the vertical strip that has the teeth on it that lets the work surface up and down is missing. I'm not sure what you call it or if that part is available. I don't want to go through the effort of getting this thing home if it's a boat anchor because I have enough junk around my place already. What do you guys think about it? I believe it's 220v. I can use it if it to replace my bench top harbor freight drill press if it works, so should I bring it home? I have searched and I've seen a few similar to it, but not one exactly the same. What do you guys know about it? Sorry, the pics aren't the best but it was in the dark and I had to take pics with the flash on my phone.

I spy a Delta 17" drill press (I believe it's 17", anyways -- could possibly be 15") with a production table, table raising mechanism, and a Wahlstrom Float Lock drill vise in size large with the quick release option. It also has the belt cover which is often missing. This is a great drill press for metal fab and woodworking, and its far heavier duty with tighter tolerances than anything you can buy new under several thousand. Pretty much every serious cabinet shop I know has one of these. Parts are readily available through several places (owwm.org's BOYD, Plaza Machinery, etc.). Expect that there's a good chance you'll have to change out the motor bearings and spindle bearings as you would with any used machine (this is inexpensive and relatively easy to do). If it's 3-phase, we can help you sort that out, too.

Seriously, go get it. Then get some simple green or purple power and give that poor dirty machine a bath.

If you don't have 220. throw a 110 motor on it. I find motors often enough on CL or yard sales, or pull them off a beat machine for a good machine.

A 220v single phase motor rewired for 110v household power in about 5 minutes (there are rare exceptions, but the motors Delta used are all dual voltage so no problem). If the motor tag says 110/220v then you're in luck. However, if it says 220/440v, then you have a 3-phase motor, which cannot be wired by itself to run on household power. You can get a VFD to run it on household power and also have infinite variable speed and reverse, or you can switch out the motor for a single phase motor with the identical frame number (listed on the info tag).

I just saw the part in the OP's post where he's missing the table raising rack (that's what the part is called). Put a WTB ad on OWWM.org's BOYD forum. I see that part for sale pretty frequently over there as people part out their drills.

Ah, so that's called a "Wahlstrom Float Lock drill vise in size large with the quick release option." HAHA Is that rare? I've looked at pictures of these presses on the web and haven't seen that piece on the ones I've looked at.

I have 220 in my barn, so I'm good there...

So how much does this thing weigh and how many guys do I need to take with me to move it? Does it need to be transported standing up?

Yes it is a delta 17" machine, ~350 lbs with the production table. You can lay it down, but be smart about it and block it up so it doesn't rest on anything important/fragile.

It's old.. It's cast iron machinery.. if you don't know if you should get it--then don't.. Provide all the information available on CL and sell it if its not being used and use the money for a nice weekend getaway.. Or--donate it to a local GJ'er..

Christ. Asking that question regarding something like that is akin to asking if you ought to take a hot piece of tottie up on her offer of a ********* with you, her and her hot bisexual female lover. Go get it you plonker. :D

Not just yes . . . . . . . but . . . . HELL Yeah !!!

Restore that baby and you'll have hard working home drill press.

Post up PIC of the motor plate so Sparky's can tell you what you need to wire it up. Might also be dual voltage motor (ie 115v/230v).

For free, got yourself first GJ accolade . . . . YOU **** !!!

if you lay it down to haul it i like to take some 4x4 or 4x6 blocks a wood and a tire or 2 that don't have a rim on it just the tire they work great for putting under a DP(drill press)
and other machines theres lots a people on hear that will help assist you in working on it and lots of info GO GET IT:thumbup:

That thing is complete enough that you should definitely use it to supplement if not replace your Harbor Freight benchtop drill press. Check eBay for the lift part you'll need to get the table to work.

I have a similar model to yours without the production table and I use it so much, I haven't gotten around to restoring it. It's a great drill press.

Man, go get that.
seeing three wires plus a ground, it likley three phase. If it is, you can buy a 110 volt to three phase inverter, then you can fine tune the motor speeds.

That's a nice press. I carried my Powermatic home laying in the back of the truck, just block it up like has been mentioned.

Have fun.

I can't believe no one has said this yet, perhaps because you have not actually taken possession, (I'm new and not sure if the rules for this), but I think I can safely say, you ****, sir!

The vise is not really rare... they are still made (coo = USA) -- just at a price point that makes them rare in home shops. It is a fantastic thing to have, though.

The company:
http://specialtytooling.eaglerockon...l-float-lock-vice-for-drill-presses/item-2842

Penn tool sells them, as does MSC and several other places:
https://www.penntoolco.com/catalog/products/products.cfm?categoryID=7319

They are tied for the best drill press vise you can buy (Heinrich makes a cam-lock version that is equally good, and Lassy makes one that is excellent as well). All three act as a vise with a safety bar that either locks to the table or rests on the drill press column. This prevents the vise from spinning as you drill, which is a serious safety hazard otherwise.

Thanks for commenting guys...

First, I have to search to see what a plonker is:dunno:

Second, somebody said I **** ;) but what makes me **** even more is that he gave me a torch cart, 50ft dayco oxygen and acetylene hose, oxygen and acetylene bottles, Forney medium duty torch and gauges, argon bottle, 6" bench grinder, Harbor Freight arbor press, mig welder cart, bead blasting cabinet, chipping hammer, and 10" buffer, and a yard cart for the lawn mower:p but I'm trying not to brag :lol_hitti He Is moving because of his job and can't take all this stuff with him, so I'm just trying to help him out and give his stuff a new home HAHA.

The reason I asked about the drill press is I was afraid somebody would say that parts were hard to get for it or that it was one of the models they made for only one year because it ***** or something along those lines. I couldn't get it yesterday because my truck was full of other free stuff., so I'm going to get it tomorrow evening, I'll get some better pics of it and some info on the motor...

So, I just looked up the word plonker. It means idiot or stupid. I think the stupid thing to do would be to bring another piece of junk to the house when I could haul it straight to the scrap yard instead. That's why I asked about it LOL.

Looks like you've got a good haul there.

A plonker is an idiot haha...

:D It was a term used/created in "Only Fools and Horses". Dropped across this clip from the programme whilst I was looking for a classic plonker snippet. This ain't one of those clips, but it's an amusing one, so thought I'd post it anyhows. :D

A plonker snippet.

Yep, unless you happen to have three phase you need to get a VFD which will also give you near infinite speed adjustment...

The gear rack for the table lift crank can probably be bought from Boston gear, once you find out the tooth pitch. II bought one for a Canedy Otto, DP, so I can (when done) crank both the table and the head...

So guys, after this,do we start calling the USUCK recipients, "Plonkers"

As in "You Plonker! You ****!"

I got it home today, so here it is sitting in my shop!

Top job. :)

I cannot believe someone abused the table by drilling so many holes through it... just stupid in my opinion.

That's practically pristine compared to some. Can't remember where this photo came from, but there are worse tables out there. :D

Easy. Find a single phase motor on cl or eBay or local, or pick up a vfd for under $150 for maximum control plus you get to keep the original motor.
