I have copper and rubber jaw covers for my vice jaws for misc jobs. Has anyone made wood jaw covers so there work does not get marred? If so, could you tell me what kind of wood you made them from that works the best? Thanks Jim

Depending on your particular vise style, woodworking or metal, I've mostly used a hardwood, although sometime soft pine is needed for a certain job.
Woodworking vises usually have jaw faces that use screws to hold them in place, but metal working vises can often use wood jaw faces that are a floating type that simply drop in place when used. We've used these at a gun shop I once worked in that had legs on them that hung down to keep them in place during use. We also used a set that had hard felt glued on the wood to protect the bluing on the guns from harm. These are easy to make on a band saw and are cheap to replace when they're worn out. They are cut to resemble an upside down block letter "U" that simply drops over the vise's large threaded closing shaft, or if you want to be high tech, you can use some neodymium magnets to keep the jaw protectors in place.

I just cut rectangular notches in the bottom of two pieces of hardwood. The notches rest on the lead screw cover. Easy on Easy off
Any wood will do, cut them to drop in like these.

Ditto, though I have also used beech hardwood plywood for the same job.
When I upgraded to a Wilton 4" machinists vise on my main bench, I moved the Littlestown vice from that spot to another bench and replaced the jaws with aluminum. I have to say, It's nice to have a permanently mounted vise with aluminum jaws.

Take it easy on that one. I'd expect it to split easily the way that the wood overhangs the metal jaws with the grain oriented that way.
