I got that set from thetoolwarehouse.net and used a 10% off coupon code. I believe it was $125 shipped. I haven't seen it that low since then.

That set would be my exact recommendation for a starter set for a home mechanic or handyman. If the quality is what it used to be that's a lifetime set. (Or more - I have my grandfather's set, and my dad still uses his made-by-SK Kraeuter set that he bought sometime in the 70s.). Yes you want the SAE sockets.

One approach might be a new SK metric set in 1/4 and 3/8 and 1/2 if you really need it and go used for the SAE sets at lower cost if you don't use SAE much. SK can be found on ebay about 1/3rd to 1/2 new for the SAE sets with not too much effort. Other good used set options would be old Proto, Blackhawk by Proto (US made), Wright, Husky US, Kobalt US or Bahco US by Williams both, Indestro, or proper US Williams. There are others too but all of the above would be excellent socket quality. - Paul

I bought 2 of those sets (94549) for my kids from Tooltopia back in August. I got them for $134 each and free shipping so if you have some time you might be able to get a little better price.

That set has good size coverage.... I would give it an A+ in all regards... Later on, add Your pet flexhead ratchet and a few extensions... That is a bargain at that price; and as others have said: it can be bought for even less..

Not as high end, but I always thought this socket set: Williams 50666 3/8" set looked like a really good deal.

It's their cheaper line, which I think is made in Taiwan, but it's a very complete set for only $90ish. (Covers metric, sae, standard, and deep)

For cheap home sets I think gear wrench seems really good too. Dirt cheap with Advance Auto, lifetime replacement, made in Taiwan. Here's the amazon version: GearWrench 80550P or the generic KD tools version on sale for $81.

Check on ebay. There are a few of those sets up right now, and they sometimes finish under $100. I bought mine used a while back with a broken case hinge for $75.

That has been my main set of sockets along with a swivel head ratchet and I have had it for over 15 years. Never broken one. I also like the similar 1/4 set. Recommended!
