When my pole building is up, i'm going to want a wood burning stove. I am getting metal roof and sides.......will I have any problems with water leaks if I go straight up thru the roof? Any pics around how you seal up there?

Thanks!

I believe it is easier and less likely to leak if it exits out the peak. I have mine 90 out of the wall and then go up, not the best set up but it works.

Sorry, I must disagree. This would require a custom made flashing, and depending on the structure, could hurt the integrity. You should not cut the ridge board if at all possible.

FYI. I have been in the hearth and chimney business since 1978. All I have ever done.

Is it just harder/more expensive but less likely to leak exiting out peak. I was always told a chimney that comes through the roof at the ridge will give you the least potential for leakage, because it is where the roof drains into the chimney that is prone to leakage. I have no experience in this but I am hoping to move my chiney one day and would like know. Also I believe his building has trusses and there would be no ridge board for say so no loss of integrity. :headscrat

With a metal roof I think it works best to go through the roof just down from the peak. You can put the top edge of the flashing under the cap piece. This is the way that I do it when possible, can't leak.

Check out this company www.icc-rsf.com we use them at our company all the time. They just interduced a peack flashing that will go up to 12/12, but they have one the best metal roof flashing i have ever seen. It on requires one cut above the hole for the chimney to slide the top half in and the bottem half is trimable to the shape of the roof and you screw it down with lots of silicone underneath.
