Dutch: nice Woden vise and i didn't know that they made a quick release version too. do you like the Woden's, Parkinson's or the Record's quick release better or are they the same design?

AFAIK they all use the same quick release design, this is the first quick release vice I have had my hands on (well I have a Record that gas had its quick release removed), its very smooth in operation. I like this one and think it will go on the bench at some point.

can you share any pictures of the one you are looking at?.

Drives, I had it in my hand and left it behind. It's at a friends shop, didn't get any pics for now. I was surprised how heavy it seemed. After reading all the posts about them I gained a higher appreciation of the 51xx series.

I did find this Chas Parker 974 the other day for $70, jaws are in very nice shape. Fully plan on restoring it, but I do kinda like the grungy look it has right now.

I don't usually go out of my way to pay for vises, but this one kinda found its way to me. It has 6" jaws and no markings on it (that I can tell). There's a pin for the swivel base that locks into a few set positions. It's huge. Must weigh at least 100lbs. I'll post more on it later when I get it to my shop, but any idea who made it and when it's from?

Well I'll have to keep my eyes open. I really don't know what to look for in a vice. Any one thing I should look for does or don'ts?

There are over 1200 pages of vise knowledge here to wrap your mind around. There are some links at the beginning of this thread that will give you some information about vises. Also, I posted some tips on buying vises on the "Vise Repair 101" thread; Page 6, Post 106.

WOW! That changes things. 75$ may be a deal. Sorry, I thought it was a woodworking vise when I googled the number. You may have a good deal there. Please show pictures when you can.

The Craftsman 5191 is a nice thing to have bolted to your bench...

4" and weighs 53 pounds...

Any of the 51XX series are keepers...

Really Oldh, you think those Craftsman 51xx are good? Overrated clones of Chinese vises in my opinion!! What do you think makes them so good? (This should be good)

It seems to rain Versa-Vises at my house so here's another. I wanted to see what they looked like in any color but red so my last one was green. With that out of my system this new one is back to red and, boy-howdy, is it red! This thing just lights up my garage it's so bright. Definitely the first thing you notice when you walk into the room. It started in fantastic condition, a real light user, so the end product easily turned out nice imo.

Lets see if I have figured this stuff out. I'm no puter wiz. But this is the post vise I picked up from a machine shop in KC, Mo. The 80 year old owner is retiring And selling out. I also bought a parker vise along with many other items. He threw in the monkey wrench's for free. Paid 75.00 for each vise. My question is does and one have any info on this post vise maker. The marking are W.T & FC. Only thing I have found is that it may be mid 1800's and english

topop, BS vises are tough to ID. some were made by the BS, and some (I expect/suspect yours) were mass/manufactured. Possibly one of the guys across the pond can ID the initials. :dunno:

how wide are the jaws, and what does it weigh? price seems decent, but the bigger the vise...

Your Parker Mod No. is throwing me though. that looks like a 974, but it's marked 874?

I acquired this today, Rock Island 597. It's a big boy for sure. I had to load and unload it using an engine hoist.

Now that I have it home it seems like it might be too big. Ha! So, maybe I'll restore it and sell it or restore it and trade my dad for his slightly smaller Reed.

Nepbug: so tell us where you found that little Rock Island hiding? where are you located because it doesn't say in your profile?

i'm thinking you might own another vise or old tool since you bought a big vise so happy to see you finally joined Garage Journal's forum so you can show us more and maybe ask a few questions.

welcome

EX
: any issues with your $25 Reed 2C? yes i still remembered without looking it up that you found one of the nicest Reed vises they make for a pittance. looks great BTW.

Big dude, that is...

If restoration and resale is in its future, this is a good place to sell it...

Ok, hello all, I just got done completing the "how to trick your Athol vise" thread. So many here were a huge help in FINALLY getting it done! I hope you like it, and if you do please "bump it" up! Here is a teaser:

No, the parker is a 974. The vise is dirty. It was in a working machine shop up until the first of the year. Like many of the vises I have , the ol'timer running the shop is an American classic. The BS vise weighs in at 36 lbs and the jaws measure 4 1/8 ". I truly appreciate the help and the time you have given me and this journal. I have been reading your quotes for several years while learning about vises. I only have about 26 vise but I can honestly say my all time favorite is my next one!

Man, that sure looks like an 8 in the pic! Even looks like it has a notch between the loops on the right side! But OK, you have it in front of you...

Great finds!

And yes, I think that sentiment is common in this thread!

You should make it your sig!

Here is my RI 94, paid 80 for it. I also have a Parker 974 I paid 60. Great set of vises, but $375 is probably a little too high, IMO. These purchases were also within the last 6 months, so its not like it was years ago. Found one on ebay locally and the other on CL.
