I have seen a nice spring compressor. One that is designed to be used with an impact gun. The company makes stuff specific for Volkswagen I think. I cannot come up with the name of the company right now, but it looks to be of good quality. The design is very similar to that one in the picture.

I just did a search, the company name is Sir Tools, there website is not fully functioning at the moment, otherwise I would provide a link. I have seen their advertisement in the newspaper type flyer from Snap-On. Which leads me to believe that it would be in the Snap-On supplemental catalog.

I've used a similar style one, that was hydraulic powered vs screw like this one,
that was the nicest spring compressor I've ever used, but can't say much about the screw type, but the adapters look to be the same so I don't see why wouldn't work just as nice

I have used one like this before.
It is a good safe tool.

An air ratchet is preferred, but I have used an impact gun also and it worked fine.

Lot of the vehicles, you are better buying the loaded strut which are already put together.Monroe and another company did this for the DIYer so they don't have to rent a spring compressor or take the struts to a shop with a spring compressor.

yeah, just make sure to not snap the screw...should be easy enough to see when she's bottomed out, though

if you're spending the time and money, i'd go oem...which i don't know of any oem doing fully loaded struts for w/e reason...monroe and the like really ain't that great, and will prolly start to fail in only a few thousand miles anyway

TOPTUL sells a very similar kit JGAI0801 but it has two problems. One it's fairly expensive so I didn't think it would sell (I'd have to sell it for $400) and secondly you can't use it with an air wrench.

OK you think a air ratchet would have enough torque to compress a spring

My feedback is that spring compressors will get you killed or maimed for life. They have cost us almost as many mechanics as jack/jackstand falls.

Be smart and use quick struts, or at least get one of those big wall mounted spring compressor outfits that cost $1000+ or let a machine shop do it that has proper safety equipment.

I have a Klann version of this tool which is designed to be used with a impact, It is a Mercedes & BMW oem specialty tool... I have used in countless times over the past 35 years. Never even had a close call with spring, if used correctly you will not have an issue!

Would I cheap out on one though? Not a chance.

Eh, I seriously doubt that bud...hell, you could always undo the top nut with the car on the ground, then jack up on the lca, put a stand under the pinch weld, then slowly lower lca to let the spring tension out, and assemble it the opposite of that

I have used this tool to overhaul the suspension on a couple of passenger cars. The tool is extremely heavy and appear well made. I recall using a 21mm ratcheting wrench to turn the screw, it was actually very easy due to the taper of the thread. The instruction specifically says do not use impact wrench! The different size claws are provided for different diameter springs, there are small hex screws that secure each claw to the compressor assembly. This tool made suspension change a breeze.

The Sir Tools spring compressor is designed to be used with an impact wrench. It is also designed to compress the spring on the car to save time. It does not work on all cars, but many.

Being careful and thinking about what you are doing, in regards to safety helps prevent injuries. Release spring tension slowly and methodically, depending on the type of spring compressor being used. Maybe watch an instructional video on the tool you are using, or get some help from someone with èxperience.

I have checked out several types of spring compressors, I had planned to get the Sir tools compressor, but I would really like to see the hydraulic version.

Please a picture, link, or info on the hydraulic spring compressor.
