wow! That's a rip off. I'm sure HJE will be much cheaper. They also sell the armstrong ratchets cheaper than anyone else.

You mean side to side and in and out? Yes, they have a bit. But no slack with the gear on pawl.

My new one has a lot of movement in and out. I thought about measuring it earlier, and now I know I should have! I have a lot of shim stock of various thicknesses, so I think I'm going to make a shim and put in between the gear and the body and see what happens. It should make it feel a lot better. There is no slack between the gear and the pawl because the pawl is spring loaded! When you apply force, the pawl gets wedged between the gear and the ratchet body and gets even tighter (no slack).

It would be nice but I doubt it, that seemed to be about the going rate everywhere I found them. Also AAP was $25 cheaper than HJE for me when I ordered all three flex ratchets. It's too bad AAP doesn't sell the standard ones.

Alright so here is the official word straight from Armstrong. It looks like they have added a few new 88 tooth ratchets to their line. Here is a list of the 88 tooth ratchets that they are now offering. I'm going to put an order in with them today and see what prices/availability look like.

I'd probably pick up a 1/2 drive model then... have the 88T 3/8 and 1/4. These are generally my go to ratchets when I need extreme access as I have yet to find a fullsize ratchet with heads as small as these.

Just an FYI, I bought a 3/8 Flex Ratchet from Advance Autoparts and it was not 88T. So they still have old stock.

So, we specifically ordered the new 88 tooth versions of their ratchets and the ratcheting replacement kits, and they ended up sending us all the old 60 tooth versions. I talked with the Armstrong rep that came in the store yesterday and here's the deal. Armstrong is eventually going to replace these ratchets with the 88 tooth version, but there is no exact date on when that will happen. It is a soft release, in that, they are waiting to sell out of their old stock. So there isn't really any way to know when that happens since they used the exact same part number. Kinda frustrating. Also they are in the midst of moving their factory. (I believe it's to Virginia.) From what the rep told me, Apex is investing in Armstrong and hopefully we will see some interesting new products from them after the move is settled. So in the mean time, I will keep an eye out for when the old 60 tooth stock transitions into the 88 tooth.

Ugh, this is eerily similar to when they upgraded some of the Maxx ratchets to 88 teeth but weren't very clear about which ones specifically they upgraded.

I wish they would release a long handled maxx ratchet, the flexy doesnt count. Also add some knurling to the top of their sockets...like mac. Mac uses too soft of steel for me to wrench with them.

Why doesn't the flex count? It works exactly the same and means you don't need multiple tools that serve the same purpose.

Dang still no 1/4. I already bought the 3/8 awhile back from a Matco dealer and don't see much need for a fine tooth 1/2.

I have to agree with you there. My old Hazets are 36 ?? and they do just fine.
Teeth aren't everything.......at least when we're talking ratchets.:confused:

Teeth aren't everything, but after 3 decades of Craftsman RP using the Armstrong 88 tooth was pretty incredible (I don't have SO money, I'm a HS teacher).

I have an Armstrong 11-992 that I go out of my way to use because I like it so much.

Looking forward to the 1/4 flex head in 88- I don't use 1/2 much.

The high tooth count can be a lifesaver! Anything 72t or greater is sufficient, but I've been spoiled and can't go any lower. I will be hitting up HJE for a couple of these 88t to keep in my race car tool bag.
