I keep seeing people refer to tools and boxes as "an investment". Tools and boxes are not "investments". They are consumer items. Some of us use them for our hobbies, and some to make our living. If you ever are buying a box as an investment, I'd say you're putting your money in the wrong place. Buy what is the best for your application, and buy enough to do the job, and maybe use the money elsewhere when you don't need it sitting in a box. That extra money saved would make money being invested.
You can most likely do just fine selling a Snap-On box down the road, IF it was used when you bought it. Let someone else take the huge hit and buy it new, without a doubt. But, an investment, it's really not.

You know what he means though, right? Does everyone on GJ think everyone else is a complete imbecile?

I came into this thread thinking why would anyone compare these two boxes. Really seemed like Apples and Oranges. Now I see why someone would. I get it, and thank you guys for teaching me something I didn't know.

The Largest Dividend a Good Tool Box Investment Has PAID Off for ME is the Peace of mind in Knowing MY Expensive Professional Grade Tools Will Be Safely Locked Up and Waiting for Me to Use.... There were a few times I did not lock////and some tools did Walk...... The World is Not just about money........

No, but I just don't see a tool box as an "investment", that's all. I see it as a box to hold your tools. Yes, we need tools to make income, but is a more expensive box as opposed to a lower dollar box an investment? I think people place way too much importance on the brand a tool box is,rather than what it can offer. Is that high dollar going to make you more money than a lower dollar box? They wouldn't make me a dime more than the US General boxes I use now. Will I ever have to buy boxes again? I doubt it. All depends how you look at it, I guess...

We all love the depth, but remember if at home a 30" box will be a monster and stick out. fFr instance my box is 24" deep. If I did 30" I wouldn't be able to get out of my truck. Now that I am moving that problem will be avoided if I upgraded to a 30" box.

This is just my opinion but i used to work for Harbor Freight and i was always surprised at how many toolboxes came in damaged and how easily they were damaged. Personally i wouldn't want my tools in them. Some people love them, others hate them. I'd go with that Krl. In my eyes I would regret buying the HF 72' instead of spending the extra bit and getting a much better box.

I was at a HF facility in SC and there were 40 yard dumpsters full of HF tools. didn't see any boxes though. right where they belong.

If the KRL is available at $2K take it, it will retain some resale value for if and when you need to expand or run into a pinch in life. The HF will be worth a Craigslist curb alert at best.

After taking a look at the construction and dimensions in the store, I had pretty much decided to buy the Harbor Freight 72". I like the height, drawer size, and locking drawers. However there has been a black snap-on KRL7022 advertised locally on craiglist that caught my eye. I like the color (black/red handles), and looking at the dimension I prefer the 29" depth over the 22" from HF. I haven't seen/touched the KRL 7022, but I assume the quality is going to be on par or better than the 72" HF. Looking at the specs, the volume (32,160 in^2 v. 34,300 in^2) and weight capacity (6,800 v. 4602 lb) is close enough it probably doesn't matter for my purposes.

This is going in a home workshop. I'm not going to fill up either right off, but prefer having excess space than not enough.

By the time I pay sales tax on the HF, I'm within $700 of the KRL7022 (assume I buy for $2k - what is a good price?).

What does the wise Internet recommend?

So which road did you go down?

Not true, the 40"+ size boxes are holding their value very well around here, sometimes selling for more than they cost new:headscrat??? Most others cant say that, Snap-on or Craftsman.

Cost per sq ft of storage (using $2000 as the cost of the KRL box):
KRL 7022 $34.50/sqft
HF 72 $23.14/sqft

Unsurprisingly, the Snap On KRL is roughly 33% more expensive.

I see this very differently.

I live in San Francisco, and the cost of my garage is $400 per square foot.

The KRL occupies 10.85sq/ft and the HF 72 11.25sq/ft. The difference in occupied space in my garage makes up for the half of the cost difference and the larger capacity of the KRL makes up for the other half.

Now that the boxes functionally cost the same (in my region) the SO warranty, quality, and feel more than make this a no brainer.

P.S. SO warranty is meant for the original purchaser, however regular customers seldom have issues with slide replacements etc. Other damage is usually the fault of the owner.

If you have access to people willing to pay over retail for HF boxes, start advertising bridges and Arizona ocean property for sale. Plus move away before they infect your brain.

Most people don't know about harbor freight or how cheap the boxes really are new. People just assume its an old snap on or mac. Look at ebay, there are sellers selling harbor freight tools for more than double coupon price. You really need to educte yourself these dys. I have a conscience. Can't do that to people.

Not true at all....if u go by percentage of which each item costs new....hf boxes may bring better value.
I sold my hf 56" box for 600 bux.
I originally bought it for 699plus tax.....not too shabby I'd say

you guys that want good deals on SO and other over-priced truck brand boxes should bring a truck and come to Alabama, people hard up for cash will sell $9000 boxes for $2000 or less down here, when it's a choice between that and paying the rent!

a beautiful condition KRL7022 down here can be bought for $1500 if you have the cash and the seller has bills to pay!

so much for tool truck box resale value, in Alabama, Mississippi, and other poorer states it's about 20-25%

I used to think it didn't matter, and had all Kobalt, Husky, HF and Costco boxes.........then I found a couple smoking CL deals on SO boxes, I had the cash, so I pulled the trigger. Let me tell you right now, unequivocally, there is absolutely NO COMPARISON. For $700 (in my wallet at least, perhaps not yours, and that's perfectly fine) you would be an absolute fool not to spend the extra, assuming you have it. The difference in quality is worth AT LEAST 3x that $700. I'm no SO junkie in fact, the boxes are the only SO I own besides Dual 80 ratchets, but there's no arguing quality.
