If you do not need any wire soon, I would wait as the prices are falling for metals. They are quicker at raising prices then lowering them though.

Guys, I know I can just google this stuff, but what is 14/2 good for? I figured I'd be looking at a spool of 12/2 to wire my shop....Gonna put a bunch of 110 outlets, run a bunch of t8s and then 2-3 220v outlets for welding machine or compressor if needed.

Lights. Seriously - it's just easier to deal with than 12/2 if you don't need a 20 amp circuit. So a 15 amp lighting circuit is perfect for it. Having said that - I still use 12 mostly if I don't have enough 14 laying around even for a 15 amp circuit.

Ok so I can save a good bit of money using 14/2 for my t8's. I haven't made it to that stage of my build yet...I tend to do my research last minute, Plus I'll have help from an electrician haha

Yes - it's cheaper and being thinner easier to work with. Make sure it's hooked to a 15 amp breaker though and not a 20 :shocking:

Funny you guys are mentioning prices, I have been saving scrap aluminum (I work at a body shop)...I talked to our regular scrap metal guy and he said he has never seen can prices lower than $.55 a lb, I called friday and it was at $.48. I'm ready to get rid of this pile of aluminum but I'm trying to hold off for a while until gas prices start going back up. I know in the end it won't make much of a difference though I may as well haul it off...a matter of a few bucks.

Better to do it now then wait for it to go down further.

I recall around Katrina time wasn't 12/2 250' like $212 or $220 or something?

Either I wasn't looking at the time or romex never made it that high around here...

I do remember going into the Depot one day a few years back and noticing 12/2 was at $92... I almost had a heart attack..

As conservation becomes an issue it makes the use of 14 more practical than ever. As CFL came in to use and now led it has reduced light load more than ever. Can have a light or 2 on in every room and not be more than a couple 3 amps.
